Amazing what a good night's sleep will do...

…especially if you had a lousy sleep the night before…

Yes, I managed to haul myself out of bed on the first try this morning.
This new bed is firmer. I guess if we like the size of the bed we will get a new bedframe and headboard - one that is high enough to hide plastic containers of clothes underneath. Anyway, I slept much better last night. And when I woke up, I could yawn deeply without my whole rib cage hurting and although my back still ached, I got out of bed on the first try and I wasn't "fall over dead with exhaustion" tired! I imagine that it will take a little while to get rid of the aches and pains totally.

Made it to Pilates this morning.
The regular teacher is out for the holiday so we got the Saturday teacher as a substitute. She usually teaches a more advanced class (good to know because I was thinking of going on Saturdays, also) and we are more beginner. I will have to take a lot of months of beginner classes before making it to the Saturday class if this morning was any indication of what that Saturday class is like. I can't wait until tomorrow when my entire middle hurts! GAK!


Anyway, I am glad that I had dancer training. Some of the moves take a lot of coordination and an understanding of what it means to "elongate the spine", or the "neutral pilates stance", or "holding the core tight". Thank goodness I know what they are talking about. Although... since I've been away from it all, I've lost the ability to do this easily.

Tomorrow is a rest day. Thank goodness.

Tonight we will go to the Thursday night races put on by The Somerville Striders. Joseph will run, and I will mind the Dingle Doggie. Should be fun.

And I told my boss I am leaving work early to go shopping.
He laughed.
I love my job.
I love my boss.
He even canceled the 3pm meeting because he was mired in working on somethig distasteful.
Thank goodness he said there wasn't anything I could do to help when I offered.

Random Thought: Goals goals goals...

I think I need to review my other goals for the year.
Now that I've completed one set of goals, I need to see what others I am neglecting.

I think that I will be able to mark off one of the baseball park goals.
We are planning to go to Shea Stadium with friends to watch the Mets.
Yahoo!
I love baseball.
I love baseball parks more.
And I love the food at baseball parks most of all.

Another read: Book #7...

Okay. I am OVER MY GOAL!
Now I can go back to reading catalogs and magazines.

I just finished reading Ultra Marathon Man: Confessions of an All Night Runner by Dean Karnazes. It was a good read - very fast. And it helped that I am familiar with the material and I knew something of who the author is.

In fact, our friend Don is quoted and mentioned in the book. They traveled to the South Pole together and Don even sent me a picture of HIMSELF standing naked behind the South Pole. I guess he and Dean took turns taking pictures of each other. LOL!

I will say that since I am familiar with the topic of Ultra Running, and have known people to run and attempt to run Western States, and have done the relay (Reach the Beach) in the Northeast that mirror The Relay that he mentions, I wasn't surprised by what he wrote.

I will also say that the book did nothing towards making me curious or want to do these ultra running events myself. In fact, I'd say that if I had any thoughts of attempting a 100-mile race, this book just about made me decide against it. However, I am still tempted by a 50-miler, more specifically by Comrades which I do hope to do one day.

I will recommend this book and on a scale of 1-5 (lowest to highest, I would give it a 4 - I really liked it.)

A good night's sleep...

...might be had after all...

I came home early - relatively early, anyway...
And what do I find?
Mattresses and box springs and plastic containers of clothes that USED to be under the bed, and the bed, taken apart...

Turns out that Joseph came home early.
And since he had nothing better to do, ahem, he decided to go to storage and get the other bed.
You know, that chore - big chore - that we were going to do this weekend.
I was contemplating sleeping on our wonderful French sofa because I desperately needed a good night's sleep.

Anyway, he set up the bed this afternoon.
He took apart the old bed, hauled the new bed from storage, and then set up the new bed.
What's amazing is that Joseph isn't a big guy,
He's about 5'6" but very strong.
And it's amazing how strong.
He did all of this by himself!

Now we have so much space because the old bed was a queen and this one is a double.
And the hats that used to hang on the four poster bed posts have no home. Where to hang them? Think think think...
And the space under the bed for storage? Oh, about half what it used to be.
So the hats are laying about and the extra containers of clothes are hanging about and well...
Thank goodness that neither one of us are neat-freaks! LOLOL!!!

My Hunny Bunny is simply amazing.

Of course he did remind me today that we may not be around for Tax Free day since we might be picking up Elizabeth from NY that day.
GAH!!!!!!!

I need an ice cream samwitch... sheesh....

Falling asleep at my desk...

…is never a good thing…

I gotta get me a new bed.
The one I have was bought sight unseen - via an 800- number.
I will never do that again…

It's too soft.
And I ordered a firm mattress.
I've been having back aches for over a year.
We added a layer of the egg crate material and that helped for a while.
But now, even that is not working.

I got up this morning and I couldn't yawn.
Every time I took a breath - at the height of the yawn, my whole rib cage area HURT!
I had to try yawning about ten times before I could get a good deep breath!
Joseph stretched me out and pounded on my back a bit to get me going, which helped out a LOT.
But it's getting to a point that it's affecting my sleep and last night was the worst it's been.
And it's steadily getting worse.

Needless to say, I am totally exhausted from the lack of quality sleep.
This weekend, we will switch the bed out with one we have in storage.
If that doesn't work, then on August 13th, it's Tax-Free Day in Massachusetts.
We will get a new bed then. Tax Free on anything under $2500. And that's a lot of sales tax dollars!

Anyway, I am so so so tired.
I would love to get up early and go running.
I ran for 40 minutes this morning and it was so damn hot!

I got up at 4:35 am this morning and would have loved to have run at 5 but I was so tired from lack of sleep that I just couldn't do it.

Hopefully the new bed will work - and I do not want to live on painkillers.

Speaking of Tax Free Day, last year we were traveling so couldn't take advantage.
This year I am gonna make it a point to stay home.
There's a lot of costly items where sales tax would make a big difference in savings.
The bed, if the one in storage doesn't work.
An air purifier. Or two. One for the bedroom and one for the downstairs.
Maybe that Camera I've been wanting.
And how about that bike for Joseph.

Another senseless fear...

…that I've been thinking about mentioning…

I think of this often but time gets away from me and I forget to write it down.
But my meeting this morning has been canceled and there is nothing on my schedule at this very second, so I thought I'd take the time to put this down since it's been nagging away at the back of my mind lately…

Fear of… drum roll please…

Natural disaster.

I do not mean tornadoes or hurricanes.
Nothing so simple as a flood or an earthquake.
I am not talking about the typical garden variety natural disaster that brings your average mayhem and chaos.

No.
I am talking about BIG THINGS.
Like the island of the Pacific (can't remember the name right now) that falls into the ocean via a large landside, that causes a tsunami that floods half of the United States. On the East Coast. Where I live. And where it is not that much above sea level, I might add.

OR… more like….a gigantical meteor the size of Texas that hits the earth, causing tsunami's and floods, fires and earthquakes, hat basically levels half the Earth.

Not to mention the ensuing YEARS O' DARKNESS following such a disaster… with dust cover so thick that no light penetrates - like the dark of night without stars or a moon… only this one goes on and on and seems endless. Those who survive with be dead by radiation poisoning or… lack of nutrients. Living creatures will be dead.

What to do what to do what to do…

So… I have an idea.
Three years of vitamins all in a backpack. Rotate them every year - use the ones in front and add new ones to the back… that sort of thing, until disaster strikes….

And CANNED FOOD with a can opener.
The Mormons have it right.
They stock up a year of food in their cellar - as they were directed by Brigham Young - or was it Joseph Smith? Can't remember. Not to mention they all live in Utah - which is pretty well protected from these things short of the being directly hit by said meteor or asteroid...

Anyway, I would need three years of canned food.
And I will need a big ass four-wheel drive vehicle to travel up debris and bad terrain… otherwise there is no way I could carry all those supplies. Maybe a Humvee. Or a tank. Or an armored truck of some kind.

And I would have to move into the mountains - like Mt. Everest so that nothing could reach me in the event of a flood. And that is before the disaster hits because the vehicle couldn't move fast enough to escape the coming tide, not to mention the weight alone would drag you down in the deep dark blue abyss…

Hmmm… it all seemed so reasonable before I wrote all this down…
I think I need an alternative plan.

Wednesday Weigh In...

…has been such a damn disappointment lately…

I've lost nothing.
No weight.
At. All.
Nada.
Zip.
Zilch.

I already eat right.
I've been running for the past three weeks - now into my fourth week.
Okay. So 6 miles a week isn't a lot and they don't add up to a pound of calories in three weeks of running.
But those are just details.
Details details details.

I think it's time for something drastic.
I just haven't figured out what that is yet.

Meetings are the worst...

...when they are supposed to serve lunch and they forget to order it...
My boss must have had a brain fart because it was 2pm before I ate...
which was after the aforementioned meeting...and I had to GO OUT into this DAMN HHH to get my lunch from South Station and it's not exactly HEALTHY! GAH!!!! I would have brought my lunch from home had I know he was gonna forget!

At least we had breakfast at another meeting this morning - which is why I came to work early and skipped out on Pilates class. I will go tomorrow night to make up - I do NOT want to miss this class any more than I have to, especially since I have felt the day-after-pain enough to know that it works and because I only just started and it's not a good track record yet.

Speaking of the meeting this morning, it was the 6-week global meeting I have with India and the USA staff. Everything went well - even with the camera crews on both continents taping us. Turns out we are getting a reputation for success in global delivery. After this is broadcast out to the entire firm in August, the word will get out to everyone. Which is good, I guess. MORE WORK!!! Which means happiness for a staff that likes to be continually busy!

We were invited to go to the NBA draft party for the Celtics tonight but we decided against it. Too. Damn. Tired.... Yes, even to rub elbows with the NBA....If it were in Boston, it'd be one thing... but to get into the car and drive for 30 minutes... ya get the picture...

Seems we will be going to a friend's place this coming weekend for the Fourth of July. We can bring the Dingle Doggie so all the better in terms of logistics. Cookout on Sunday, staying over (pajama party!!!) and then a road race on the morning of the 4th, followed by a lunch. Then we will leave to beat the traffic back into the city. So, what was a "big nothing" weekend has turned into quite something...

The heat is something, too... but then again, the HUMIDITY is entirely something else. Of course, it's not as bad as NYC, where my friend Debbie just about MELTS during the summer, and just when you think she is going to disappear into a puddle, fall comes around the corner and makes her more solid again... Can't imagine that kindahumidity... Anyway... I hate wearing closed up shoes when it's so humid. I would much rather wear flip flops but I do have to work for a living...

And speaking of flip flops, what IS IT with all the people going to work in FLIP FLOPS? And I don't mean mules or slides. I mean RUBBER THONGED FLIP FLOPS. The kind you buy at CVS or Walmart. And some of them are MESH slip-ons that looks like SLIPPERS! HELLLOOOOOO!!! Dirty fat ugly toes do NOT belong in the workplace. Of course, I am not a feet person. At. All. Whatever.

Back to work... so much to do!!!

My routine...

…starts on Mondays…

It's bizarre.
I have the same routine every Monday through Friday when I get into work - even when "getting into work" means working from home. I start out by spending about 30 minutes reading blogs. Then I review my calendar for the day - which determines how much procrastination and goofing off I can do for the day. Of course, "procrastination" and "goofing off" is all rather relative.. especially even when I can't seem to find time to run errands - like walk up to the eyeglass place to get my glasses adjusted, even though I've been bringing them into work "just in case" for the last two weeks or so. Ahem.

Then I go log into voicemail and retrieve my messages.
I wouldn't really do this if I don’t have to change my outgoing message from my being away in another office as opposed to being in my regular office in Boston. If I don't change my message, almost every person who leaves me a voice mail starts by saying, "uh… you might want to change your message; it still says that you are work ing in RI (or NH)…" and then leaves the message.

If not for this, I usually leave the message for a day or two.
I hate being on the phone - even if it's to get messages.
I know. It's getting a bit over the top…

After the messages, I will make the phones calls between meetings or between making lists of things I have to do. My day doesn't really get going or get productive until the afternoon. Then I am all resentful when 6pm comes around because it means I have to go home. Not that I mind going home; in fact, I love going home. It means I will be with my Hunny Bunny (and the Dingle Doggie and the Crazy Cat). But the actual act of un-inerting myself to get my butt out of chair to actually start the physical activity to get to the train… well, that is a major intrusion…And of course there is the danger that I will get distracted by something.

Speaking of distractions… I am usually thinking of two and three things at one time. I start doing one thing, then I think about something else and I write that down so I don't forget, which might lead me to notice something else, and so on and so on… Then an hour or so later, I remember what I started to do… I have major time management and distraction issues. I've tired to write things down and then follow the list… that works well for about a day or two… then I get distracted… and it starts all over again…

Today… I WILL go to the eyeglass place to get my glasses adjust.
I will I will I will…

Now… where was I with that "to do" list….
I have to change the font on this thing… it's boring…
and I have to remember the thing about the vitamins…
and…
where was I…this weekend, maybe I need a list for the weekend??

On another note... got my 6 month review today. It was awesome! I am totally amazed. My new boss appreciates me and my group...

Funny thing. I ran without my iPod this morning... 30 minutes of thinking. I notice that I think more when I don't have music to listen to. I mostly thought about work. I thought about other stuff, but mostly it was about work work work...

On Sunday, we go a-visiting...

...in New Hampshire...

Had a busy day today... We dropped Elizabeth off at her violin camp after breakfast.
Of course, if not for the Dingle Doggie,we would have a nice sitdown breakfast at Leung's on Church Street. But they had a sign that said "no dogs tableside." And that was for the OUTSIDE seating area. Huh? No DOGS OUTSIDE??? How dog-unfriendly and un-Vermontish is THAT? Well, I can safely say that Leungs will NEVER EVER get my money or my patronage at their restaurant EVER. Sheesh. So we ended up at Brueggers on the next block. It was just as well.. it was cheaper and the bagel sandwich was pretty good and the Dingle was happy to be sitting with us and she is always so good. Such a good dog...

On the way back from Vermont we stopped off to see Amanda and Gina. We might the "new pup" who is just the sweetest thing! And Henri was moving slowly as usual, LOL! Anyway, Gina made up lobster rolls. O.M.G. These were the BEST lobster rolls ever. First of all, Gina cooked the lobster and picked the meat out of the shells and put the whole thing together herself. I had TWO! GAK! I was so full that I couldn't eat dinner and only had a small snack much later. Just enough to tide me over until morning.

The traffic back wasn't bad as it could have been. And when we got to the house, and opened the door, the heat immediately oozed over me in about 12 seconds! It was like a weapon of mass destruction. You could feel it just descend over you and you were powerless to stop it. Can't think of any other way to describe it.

We got home in time to unpack, do some laundry, watch a movie (The Road to Perdition), and have a small smackeral instead of a full blown dinner. Watched the thundershower blow through, which didn't do much for the heat and humidity. At least our roses got watered.

A weekend in Vermont...

...is always a good weekend...

We are in Vermont. Burlington to be exact.
Turns out that Burlington is named after a guy named Burling from whom the land was bought by the guy who settled the area. Acres of land was bought by one man from one man and now a city sits atop someone's vision. Pretty cool.

Anyway, we are here because Elizabeth has violin camp at UVM.

We brought the Dingle Doggie, who has been BARKING AT EVERY SOUND IN THE HALLWAY! GAH!!! This Holiday Inn is great. They allow pets. Dumb Dingle Doggie...

We went to the Vermont Pub & Brewery for a late lunch/early dinner - I always eat there when I come to Burlington. And then we walked up the Church Street shopping area. And of course, I saw the Culinary Institute and I thought, "DANG! I could have eaten there instead!!! ARG!!!" And of course, I do that every single time I come up here...Next time, I hope that Joseph reminds me and we actually go eat at the Culinary Institute.

It is damn. HOT. here. GAH!!! It was about 92* when we arrived. HOT HOT HOT!!! Of course, it's supposed to be hotter in Boston. Phew!

Before we left this morning, I managed to get in a run. Ran for 40 minutes, 4/2 run/walk. I felt so good. I've been running with my iPod and strangely enough, I don't think as much when I run with headphones on as I do when I run with nothing to listen to. Other than the random thoughts that go through my head. Needless to say, I am doing less thinking and more singing. To myself, of course.

Tomorrow is a rest day. Yahoo!

Book Review #6...

...whoopeeeeee.....

I just finished reading Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim by David Sedaris. It was excellent. I love David Sedaris. He is very funny and this particular book has more about his family than the other books I've read.

The way he writes about his family, it seems like a pretty screwed up family but then what family isn't dysfunctional to some extent? Amid the hilarity of some of the situations, and the funny twists of words that David Sedaris uses, I found the situations and stories kind of sad underneath it all. I am not sure if it was the attempt, but I was left feeling strangely empty, wondering what "family" is and what it means when the content of "family" seems so hollow.

It's hard to explain how I feel but I remember living in the South (in North Carolina, which is where the book starts out), and the hot days when it was so hot that it seemed you could fry an egg on the sidewalk and as a kid, you really had nowhere to go and nothing to do, so you sat on the sidewalk in front of your house with a stick, poking at the little sandy anthill that some bugs made, wondering how deep it goes, and wondering about China and how deep you have to dig to get there, and well, because there wasn't much else to do...

On a scale of 1-5, I would give this book a 4. Especially since I finished it in about two weeks!
A record for me.

Can I tell you about PAIN???

Yup. I guess that Pilates class I took yesterday worked.
I got up this morning and my whole body ached from my upper thighs to my rib cage.
And it's amazing that even after only a half-assed-disciplined Pilates class using un-strict form, that Pilates was still effective enough for me to want to take a bottle of pain killers and fall back asleep. GAH!!!!

I didn't run, of course. With the back aches and the Pilates-induced trunk aches, there was no way I was going to go running down the street JARRING my ENTIRE body! So Joseph suggested that I forgo the run for a rest day and then do the long run tomorrow, before we head out to Vermont for the weekend. And as I laid there in bed, I definitely agreed with him. My Hunny Bunny is SO SMART! LOL!

Went to work at the RI office today. I now know that I must leave at 3:30 if I don't plan on leaving after 5:30. I left work about 4:00 - and it was around 4:16 when I FINALLY pulled out of the driveway. The ride up I-95 was awesome. But then you hit the brick wall known as 128 and you come to a screeching halt. ARG!!! I went through the Blue Hills just to keep moving forward - I HATE standing still even if in the end, I get to my destination in the same amount of time. Anyway, I didn't get home until 5:45 which is an hour and a half drive. What a DAMN WASTE OF TIME!!! I have decided that unless I NEED to be in the remote offices, I am not going there any more. Of course that means I have to go to NH about once a month and then to RI once a week. I've pretty much settled on Fridays for RI.

Got home and John the Nephew was there. Happy happy!! He just flew back from Korea and is staying the night. So nice to have both of the kids home!!! Joseph and I love it - sort of like a little family, ya know? Anyway, made my world famous meatloaf and my fully fatted mashed potatoes. I was going to make something Korean but Joseph reminded me that John had just COME FROM KOREA and don't I think that something NOT KOREAN might be welcome by him? Hmmmm....

It's getting hotter. Hot hot hot....
This weekend is supposed to be absolutely blistering.

Yes, I made it...

...to Pilates this morning...
It's about damn time, I might add.
I've been toying with the idea of taking Pilates lessons for a while - at least a couple of years - and suddenly it finally dawned on marblehead that instead of PAYING for lessons, I could just take them at the gym. You know, the place where I pay a monthly membership fee? Yup. That place.

I got up at 6:05 am and headed out before Joseph came home with the Dingle Doggie from the usual morning walk.

I am glad that I went. The class was small, about 8 people, and it's been a while since my last class but I have good memory. Good thing, too, because it turns out that the instructor crams quite a bit into an hour. The last time I took Pilates, it was about 2 hours each session because it takes time to learn to prepare and isolate the right muscles, etc. It's all bout holding your trunk absolutely still in a neutral position using a lot of isometric force, and then only moving that one muscle you are targeting. And when you start out it has to be done slowly because doing circles with your leg in the air an cause you to fall over or roll or engage the wrong muscles if you are not experienced or if you do it too fast.

The class chugged along - most of the people had taken it before to some extent. I even went a little slower that the instructor, trying to engage the right muscles. I think I did okay, but we'll see. I know that last time I took this I could barely walk for a two days because my trunk hurt so damn bad....

I definitely am going to take this class on Tuesdays and Thursdays. That means my running schedule has to be moved up by a day... Not sure what I'll do when I go to running four days or more instead of three days... I am sure that Joseph will be able to alter the schedule to fit this in. And I know that the place close to work also has pilates during the day - the problem is in my getting there, actually making myself get out of the office to go to this class. But if times become desperate, then the desperate must do what they desperate must do...

In other words, we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

Dinner tonight was hotdogs and burgers out on the grill...

An unexpected gathering...

...Took place tonight ...

Joseph was at golf (again), so I went home early to have dinner with Elizabeth. I made boiled Mandu which is a Korean version of the Chinese wonton soup but made with the same dumplings as for Yakimandu. Anyway, they were delicious!

Joseph came home and had a little bowl of dumplings. I had put everything away, the boiled dumplings were cooling in their little ziplock containers when we hear a knock on the door and lo and behold, it's our upstairs tenant. Seems that she hadn't eaten, came into the house, smelled good smells and decided that this was the day she'd invite herself for a bite to eat. She loved the dumplings, which of course warmed the cockles of my heart. But then, I supposed when you call for take out salad to be delivered almost every night, plain broth might have sufficed! LOL!!

Then John the Nephew called and he was in NYC waiting for a connecting flight to Boston. Seems he didn't sleep much on the flight from Korea because, well, you see...there were LOTS of good movies playing! Well, we had a nice chat and he will drop by tomorrow.

It was a kindofa family gathering kindofnight. And it was wonderful.

Rest day! Tomorrow I might go to Pilates. I might.

Okay, I'm gonna do it...

I printed out the class schedule for my gym.
I have been wanting to take Pilates and I've been going on and on and on about it and there are classes on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 7am. 

I've known about this for a while.
But first, the trip to Scotland deterred my best laid plans…
Then, catching up on work for a week and a half…
And then, I went away to Ohio for a week….
And now that I am back and pretty much all caught up, I guess I don't have any more excuses
Besides, I've been able to follow my running schedule and I AM on WEEK THREE of the Comeback Trail...
Unless you count my inability to get my BIG ASS OUT OF BED in time to be sufficient excuse…
And of course getting out of bed at 7am versus 6:30am is ONLY 30 minutes so it's hard to use that as an excuse…
Although large numbers of non-morning people have managed to do so.

But then again, large numbers of non-morning people have also managed to get out of bed 30 minutes earlier, too.

GAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Right now I run on Tue, Thur, and Sat or Sun.
Of course this means, I will need to alter my running schedule and run on Mon, Wed, Fri or Sat.
Which isn't too bad, I supposed.
And I know that Pilates will be good for me.
I know when I used to take it, my entire trunk HURT Constantly.  Like I had never used those core muscles in my life before.  As in EVER.  Okay. So, Pilates works.

Damn.  I am running out of reasons…
Damn damn damn.
DAMN!

Okay, I've made a decision...

...and went ahead and ordered the brown ones...

Let's hope they fit.
I am sure it has weird sizing.
I hope these help my ankles.

It's days like this...

....that make coming to work all the more worthwhile...

It was a relatively easy sort of day.
The day was crisp, bordering on hot.
I got out and ran in the morning... my third week in my Comeback Schedule, 40 minutes of running using a 4/2 run/walk. I felt good. Didn't think of a whole lot since I was listening to my wonderful iPod...

Came to work around 10am and settled in...
Had a series of nice little short ad hoc meetings...
Write my list of things to be aware of on my new whiteboard...
Had people pop in, went to the Bull Pen (where the mobile workers park themselves when they are in Boston) and saw a bunchamystaff sitting there... had a bit of fun...
Met with both managers and gave them their merit reviews...
They were both very pleased and happy...
Couldn't do my job without Wayne who has stood by me from job to job, position to position, for about 20 years....
Couldn't do my job without Adam, who will be my second in command if all goes well...
It's nice having a great staff of people...

Then someone who we hired and is waiting to start mid-July came in...
She used to work for me, then got RIF'd at her request about 4 years ago...
Went to school and got her MBA and then came back to another group as a contractor.
A position came open and so after my gyrations and to-do-ing around, we hired her.
She had an offer from another group but she was unabashed in her resolve that she wanted to come back and work for me.
So we hired her.
Today she came to my office with another DBA from another Business Unit.
He wants to move himself and all his work in that Business Unit and come work for me.
Well... we had a chat and I listened and he talked and I told him what needed to be done but he needed to follow up and see it through.
He wondered if we have anything open in case it doesn't get approved by his management - what he is suggesting is H-U-G-E... but we did it for someone else and so it can be done again.

Afterwards, Andrea sent me a note.
She thanked me for taking the time to talk to the DBA, and for giving him Hope.
That she always remembered me telling her that it's important to treat people well and give them the gift of your time.
And that in the process, it also raised her morale.
I told her that talk is cheap, seriously, and doesn't cost a lot as long as you are diberate and measured in what you say... that everyone is worthy of a chat, and sometimes, someone will someday come up with a really good idea that can change, if not the world, then the current situation, as small as it might seem... and it might ripple out to affect others - hopefully in a good way...

And tomorrow, and next week, we will see what becomes of the DBA and his resolve to take charge of his own career and put himself out there to something he feels is right.

And so... it's times like these when I realize why I went into management, kicking and screaming. When I remember once more that it's about the people and there aren't enough managers who will remember that's what it's all about...

...Major League Baseball package on cable...

Our year of free platinum cable has run out.
It wasn't really free - we paid an arm and a leg at a charity auction last year and it came as a part of the package along with with the 42" plasma screen TV. Well... actually, it wasn't even that... I think Joseph had to do some fast work and switching and working things out to get the wonderful TV we have now.

So, we canceled the platinum service and got the basic - in other words, just everything up to channel 200, along with On Demand (which I have never used), and the 800 channels (which are digital.)

Everything we watch is on basic cable anyway. And Netflix. Love Netflix.

Happiness is...

...Jang Jorim...

It's sort of a Korean beef jerky.
Made with chunks of flank steak, water, marinating soy sauce, hot green peppers, garlic cloves, brown sugar, all the fat skimmed off and all boiled in the right order so that everything is tender. And it keeps for-almost-ever... marinating and stored in it's own juices and sauce.

The juices are awesome.
You can take hot rice, add some butter, and then season it with this juice and I can eat about 5 cups of rice just because it tastes so good. And that is a lot of rice.

Next time, I will add more garlic and more hot green peppers.

It's wonderful to have with hot rice and kimchee.

All moved in...

…and totally unpacked…

We were moved from the 6th floor to the 8th floor on Friday.
On Sunday, we got an email from our admin telling us that the move was successful.
This morning, the EVP of our division sent out a "Welcome To The 8th Floor" note.
And they had breakfast brought in for us as we all spent the morning unpacking.
Yup. It's that kinda place.

Anyway… my office is fine. It's off to the side - closest to the windows but of course the wall that faces the windows to the outside world has no windows for me to look out onto Boston Harbor… in keeping with the policy that Managers have inside offices without views and that the staff has natural light. Okay, whatever.

The good part is that the printers are right outside my office and down a bit in an aisle… close but not too close to be seen or heard. And since I am off to the side on the end, I get very little traffic. But this time, I have people sitting outside my office in cubicles. I've found that they are louder than I am used to - of course they are actually very quiet people in the first place, and my old office from where I moved had NO ONE sitting outside my office, so of course this is going to be a bit louder. But I quietly go up, smile at whomever is having the conversation, and gently close the door - just so they know that I am not upset and that it's more me than them.

The only issue I have is that the desk is on the right side - it's one of those horseshoe shaped desks. I used to have it on the left side. But the door is on the left side so the desk is on the right side - something about the fire hazard so I don't have to get AROUND my desk when I need to rush out of the burning building. I hope I get used to this… 14 years with the company and they stick my desk on the OTHER SIDE! Jeeeez….

I had ten boxes. My boss came in to give me a hard time about ten boxes since he only had four. Then he came back in a couple hours and I was All. Unpacked. HA. HA. HA. He was shocked! LOL!

I am now waiting for my pictures and clocks to be hung up with care. Happy Happy!

It was a quiet day. I managed to get a major presentation out of the way - gotta check in with the boss to make sure he's okay with it, etc. I didn't leave until 7pm even with a quiet day! BAH!!! Now I have to start on a couple more presentations.

Uh oh. I see major procrastination headed my way before I actually start them. Sigh…

Book Review #5...

...one more to go...

At least I am on track for ONE of my goals this year. Sheesh.

Beyond the Devil's Teeth by Tahir Shah is a very interesting book by a very interesting author. It is written in such a way as to think that the whole thing is made up. But then he has included a series of pictures so you know that everything is probably true.

Shah's experiences are very funny and I will say that I hope NEVER to have the pleasure of traveling with this guy - not only because of the sub-standard conditions under which he traveled but because he basically seemed to have little control over his fate or destination.

It's about a search of Gondwonaland - a real place before all of the continents broke up. He seems to have traveled the underbelly of third world countries - as if traveling through third-world countries isn't bad enough, what with it's poverty even when you stay in luxury hotels.

I think that Oswaldo Rodrigues Oswaldo is my favorite character!
I would recommend this as a 4 on a scale of 1-5 (meaning I really liked it).

In the meantime, I've now started my 6th book for the year! YAHOO! This is a new one by David Sedaris who is incredibly funny in a bittersweet sort of way. And the copy I bought happened to be personally autographed by the author! Happy happy happy!

We are up to our ears...

...in FOOD…

Phew. What a day. To Trader Joes. Then to Stop & Shop.
The fridge is full, the freezer is stocked… and I feel GOOD!

Took the Little Red Bean to the car wash - used the self-service bays.
I must say that the car desperately needs a good hand waxing and polishing.
The red is faded and acid-rain has etched itself into the paint in some spots.
Sigh… it's becoming a Dong-Cha (aka "shit car" in Korean. Literally).

Anyway, I might have to think of something else.
Also, next time I will need to take a bucket and a sponge and give it a GOOD cleaning just using the water at the self-service bay to rinse.

I noticed that I missed a few dried-in dirt spots.
So sad. I love my Little Red Bean.
I am thinking of ordering that Toneau cover and a new flexible antenna.

Speaking of antennas, the antenna on the Subaru doesn't go up all the way.
What is THAT all about? The radio reception isn't that great as a result.
Thank goodness I've been listening to the iPod more lately.

Elizabeth when to NYC for a few days.
She is getting a few lessons with a violin teacher or something.
I can't imagine her life - to be so singularly focused on something and to be so good at one thing.
BTW, she was complaining about her back and her legs this morning.
Probably from the running yesterday! LOL!

The other thing I've been contemplating getting has been some MBT's. They are supposed to help with balance and strengthening the proprioceptive muscles, which is what the balance board is for. My doctor even mentioned the balance board and the muscles, and all that when he talked to me. And I've been reading up more on these.
The only thing I am stuck on is what COLOR- black or brown??? ARG!!!
I am thinking Bliss Blue - a special edition color.
Is it versatile enough?? B
rown goes better with shorts and chinos for the summer but then what if I am wearing black pants? I usually get a brown pair and a black pair but it's a bit pricey... although when it comes to loafers that has never stopped me before - since I always REGRET IT BIG TIME if I don't! Maybe I need to wait to see if I like the first pair...
I have to come to some sort of decision soon. Opinions? Anyone?

At dinner in - had an awesome Korean spicy chicken bbq on the table top gas grill.
It completely ruined my stone grill - totally grilled-on chicken bbq sauce about a quarter in thick! GAH!!!
I should have covered it with foil... next time I will do that.
Now, it looks like I will need to get a new one just for grilling burlgogi.
Dang.

Week two...

…in the comeback trail...

This is B-I-G.
Okay. So, I skipped the second run this week.
But it was only 20 minutes so I figured it's not a totally bad loss.

This morning, we met up with the Deads at Newton City Hall.
Dragged Elizabeth with us… I think she will be a bit sore tomorrow… lololol!
Anyway, did 40 minutes up the Newton Hills and then back down.
I ran with Sara, of Frank and Sara, and Elizabeth.
It was nice to have company. Sara and Frank are very very nice.
Frank is also very very funny! Although I am sure if you told him that, he would kindly disagree with you!

After the run, we all went up to Bobby's New York Deli for breakfast.
He was happy to see us all… there were about 12 of us.
Zee joined up after her run with BostonFit.
Nice to sit and chat and relax with friends.

We made it back in time for a shower and then headed out for my massage.
Wonderful! My right Gluteus has been giving me some problems. The pain has been worsening. So Arun worked on my legs, my thighs (GAH!!!), and then proceeded to work on my stomach. O.M.G. THE PAIN, THE PAIN!!! He did manage to do some scooping of the fascia but very gently. Next time we are going into the diagphram - I think this really helped the pain in my stomach muscles - my lower abs have been hurting whenever I bend over. And it's not like I do sit ups or anything like that!

We met some friends at Ten Tables. What an awesome restaurant. The owner was there and we ended up chatting with her a little bit. Our waiter was excellent. He knew that the first bottle of wine he brought was bad because Joseph could say it. And the owner seemed impressed that Joseph knew his shit. Of course he does. My Hunny Bunny knows almost everything. And if he doesn't, he makes it a point to at least learn about things. Thank G-D. I can't stand an someone who thinks they know it all when you clearly know that they are obviously wrong. Anyway…

It was nice day so far. The weather was good, not that hot, perfect for running.

I just realized....

...that I've been keeping a journal (aka this blog) for two years.
TWO YEARS.
TWO!!!

That is the longest I've ever gone.

It's 8:43 am...

...and I've already been up for almost 7 hours...

I am totally exhausted.
I need massive quantities of caffeine.
And I need to take a nap.

Sheesh.

Insomnia...

...truly sucks...

Been awake since 2am.
TWO. AYYYY. EMMMMMM!!!!! GAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can't empty my mind enough to get some sleep.
I KNEW I should have taken my MyoCalm. Dang.
Thoughts rotate through my head:
  • - my three-drawer file cabinet - I must remember to email the move person at work and let them know that this must come with me - they hate unsanctioned furniture that is not considered "standard" and this is extra so extras are not "standard"
  • - we watched the Red Violin last night and I keep thinking about the varnish and all the hands that the violin went through and I knew I was missing someone so I thought and thought and thought and knew -aha! the Pope Foundation... I knew I was missing someone at the auction!
  • - which led to thoughts about the hands in the window when I was a little girl in a Korea and walked to school - there was a storefront with a large window. I used to look up and in the window there were 4 or 5 hands - of course, I now know that they were hand replicas or manicans, but I was FOUR YEARS OLD! And YES! I used to WALK TO SCHOOL!!!Whatever! The hands rarely moved but sometimes they would have been rearranged and that would freak me out! I would run home as if a demon was chasing me
  • - that led to the presentation that I need to do at work for my boss that deals with a new reporting service that we will be developing... and how I will structure it, etc.
So after 1.5 hours, I give up. I am now downstairs and ready to start the day - full of worry that I will fall asleep at my desk this afternoon. Thank GOODNESS that our day will end at 1pm - did I mention that we are MOVING? AGAIN? That means the movers are coming to move our offices en masse starting at 1pm. And these guys are EFFICIENT!

And not to mention that I also laid in bed listening to my Hunny Bunny make his cute sleeping noises, all resentful that I wasn't making my own noises along with him! GAH!!! And listening to my stomach growl. What IS IT with the stomach growling?? I am actually HUNGRY! Gawd...

Good thing that I will be home in the afternoon. I might take a nap. A&G are coming over for dinner and all I need is to fall asleep in my plate! Of course, if I did, A&G would totally understand and not think twice about it.

Okay. Gotta go write that note to the move people about my file cabinet. Sigh...
Actually, I am still a little tired....

Another new reader...

...takes the bait....

HI LAUREE!!!

Lauree is my friend. She's been my friend for about, oh... hmmm... geez... don't remember.
I think since her daughter was about 4 or something and now she's out of college. So, sometime close to almost 18 years? EIGHTEEN YEARS??? GAK!

I don't typically know people for that long. I really haven't kept in touch with my miserable-years-of-high-school friends. And I can't remember the names most of the people I went to college with, except for my friend Steph. In fact, Steph is the longest-term friend I have.

Anyway, I started working for Lauree at a publishing company. We were very compatible from the get go. She is calm and tolerant. I am high intensity and temperamental. She is patient and I am not. She is kind and gave everyone a chance. I hate everyone, basically. She is quiet and laid back. I am loud and yell a lot. Lauree has a husband that makes me crazy. He knows it. She knows it. And he loves to make me NUTZ! And she always yells at him to leave me alone! Anyway... we've been friends ever since and I love her dearly.

We see each other maybe once a year - if that. No matter when we talk to each other, it's like we hung up yesterday. And she's always there in the back of my mind. That's the advantage of not having too many friends. They can all sit there in the back of your mind, with plenty of room, and you can think of them often. You have too many friends and there is not enough room in your brain to think about them. Ya know?

Now that she knows about this journal, she can read and see what I am up to. Now all that's left is for her to start a journal so that I can keep up with her life - which seems to be busier than mine. I don't know how she does it. Of course, she tells me the same thing - she doesn't know how I do it... And so it goes...

So, LAUREE!!! Are ya gonna BLOG??? Hmmm????

You always get what you need...

...When you need it....

You just have to look around and keep an open mind.

I always like the idea of going to seminars. I sign up for them. When it's time to go, I usually back out. I find that I enjoy the planning of things better than the execution of them. Anyway...I attended a seminar on business intelligence and analytics. I'm glad I went. I got a lot of information for a presentation I have to do on Database Trends. Yes. Broad topic. I have to crunch it down into a nutshell - about 5 to 6 pages. Yup. An entire discipline summarized in 5-6 pages. I WILL add appendices. Ahem.

I had every intention of leaving early but I got into the office and got stuck in meetings and before you know it, it's SEVEN PEE EMM! GAH!!! Got home and we went out to eat - tried B&G but they had a half hour wait. Dang! So we went to the Addis Red Sea instead. It was the first time that Elizabeth had Ethiopian food and certainly the first time that she ate with her fingers! I think she didn't mind the food but she did mention that it would have been really good with rice and a fork! LOL!

I decided to forgo the weight workout since I had to be at the seminar so early.

Boston is a harsh place...

...if you're a Yankees fan...

We went to the ballgame tonight.
Sox against the Reds.
We bought a package of four games.
One of them is with the Yankees.
We sat with the Reds fans.
There were about 50 of them who traveled here for 3 games.
They had 80* weather yesterday.
Tonight it's about 50*.
New England weather. Gotta love it.

Speaking of the weather, it was another interesting weather day.
This morning it was hot and humid.
I got out of work and it wasn't as hot but still humid.
It looked like it had rained but I couldn't be sure.
So, I drive up from RI and as I get closer you can see the cloud line hovering over the city.
I get out of the car, and YOWSAH... it's like 40 degrees cooler!
It feels like the middle of April out there.
Not that I am complaining but I wore a long sleeve t-shirt, a sweatshirt, and a rain jacket with hood to the ball game tonight.
And in the pocket, I found a pair of cashmere gloves that I had brought over from Scotland.
And I was still cold.

I am so so so tired! I hadn't been sleepy at night and getting up at a normal time the last week or so. And now I think it's catching up with me. Tomorrow I have an early morning meeting at Babson College in Wellesley. Another drive. I'll take the Miata - my Little Red Bean...

I did get out and run today.

Hours spent on the road...

...are totally wasted...
Although I am really liking my iPod mini and the iTrip for the car.
But I am starting to think about getting satellite radio.
Luke had a small unit that he showed me the other day when we went to dinner and I really like the fact that you don't get any damn COMMERCIALS! I hate commercials.

I have a little dictation recorder - small, handheld, sony... - I use it to make notes to myself while I am driving. I used to try and type notes on my Blackberry but it doesn't work so well when you are trying to drive at the same time.

It's getting so that when I drive I carry a little Driving Bag with me. It has my driving glasses, my sunglasses, my sunglass clip-ons for the eye glasses, my iTrip, the car charger for the Blackberry, the ear phones for the Blackberry, etc. I have to carry it with me from car to car because I never really know which car I will be driving from day to day. It might be easier to get duplicates of everything but spending hundreds of dollars for a second set of electronic gadgets and accoutrements are hard to justify - even for me! So I continue to carry my little bag and look for ways to fill it even more....

Today was a rest day. I was going to go to the gym but I needed to get to NH in the morning an then drive to Boston in the afternoon... wah wah wah... And with the traveling, needless to say, I didn't walk as much as I wanted to.

Reality strikes hard...

...when you go out for a 40 minute run in HEAT...

40 minutes. That's all I had to do. And, I did it. But the HEAT!!! It wasn't so bad as it could have been - only around 73 degrees but I know it was hotter when I finished. I think I will need to start getting out there early on the weekends - which sucks big time because the weekends are when I like to sleep in an hour or two. Looks like I am going to have to get up at 6am 7 days a week. BAH!!!

We had a bit of a long day today. Ended up going to Maine to Jocey's graduation party. It took about 2 hours and 45 minutes to get there. We didn't make it to the graduation itself but from what I heard of the heat and humidity, I am glad we skipped it. We got to the house a bit ahead of schedule and we sat in the car. All I could see what a SWARM of mosquitoes outside the window! GAH!!! I HATE MOSQUITOES!!!! And these were GIGANTICAL!!!! So after about 10 minutes, we drove to the nearest drug store and got DEET. 98.7% DEET!!!! And I bathed myself in it. Cancer? Whatevah! I didn't get BIT and that is what counts! HAH! And when we were in the store, I heard someone call out my name. At first I thought it was someone calling their little kid who had the same name as I do... but then it was MJ and Jocey! LOL! They had stopped in and saw the car with the plates and knew we were in there. Talk about a SMALL TOWN! LOL!

Anyway, the party was Jocey's friends and mostly family. I think we were really the only non-family adults there. It was awesome to see Jocey and MJ and Chip and Timmy. Timmy is getting taller all the time and he came up and gave me a big ole hug! Such a sweet kid. It was good to see Chip as well. It seems I see him only once a year. It was nice to see everyone!! Finally made it home about 10pm. I wish they didn't live so far.

It's was a Wowsie kindaday...

...when all the people who make you say "Wowsie!" come out to play...

I missed most of PRIDE since I left for my massage right when the parade started, and came home right after it ended. Confetti everywhere! On the way from the gym this morning, I did see three guys going to the start of the parade at Copley Square. Presumably they were on some float because they were all dressed up in pink and bubbles and one of them looked like a cake of some kind. Of course they all had on high heels and had better looking legs than I do... But that's about all I saw of PRIDE this year.

We picked up Elizabeth from the airport (she was in Philadelphia for a few days to study violin with someone her teacher wanted her to study with) and ate dinner in... pork loin, grilled veggies, brown rice and an array of korean side dishes. Washed it down with a glass of Cuvaison Merlot, which was surprisingly good because I DO NOT DRINK MERLOT. I thought it was a light cabernet. It's fun to watch Joseph tell Elizabeth to drink wine with this food or that food and watch her reaction. He's teaching her about wine, which is good since the more you know about stuff, hopefully you won't abuse it.

It's hot and humid... one of those days when the weather sits on your shoulders and just weighs you down.

While I was at the massage, Joseph went to the Backyard BBQ at the Esplanade and brought me and Elizabeth back some Life is Good pajama pants. He got himself a nice red hat with the Dingle Doggie on it. Not exactly, but it does look like her and the hat is an especially nice shade of red. It looks very good on him.

Tonight we watched Braveheart. Joseph had never seen it and I love watching it over and over. He thought it was over-rated which immediately makes me think he doesn't know what he thinks! Sheesh. Braveheart is an excellent movie!

Exercise Note.
  • Upper body weights at the gym this morning. Felt good good good.
  • Pedometer: 14369 steps = 6.7 miles - 571.8 calories in 2:15 18 hours of walking. This walking thing has been quite interesting. I am starting to think that I am active after all. I always thought I was "sedentary" or "slightly active". Now I am thinking that maybe I am "highly active."
  • Tomorrow morning I have to get up and run before we go to Maine.

It's PRIDE!!!!
That means a parade at noon,
which means streets are closed for about 5 hours,
which means no parking on THREE major roads which have LOTS O' PARKING for the residents and for suburban street warriors that come into the city on the weekends.

The streets are washed,
which means it's more humid than ever out there with the heat and all,
which is considerable since the humidity index is over 60% as it is, the point at which all things wilt and it might as well be 100%.
I guess the good news is that that since it is over 60%, you won't notice the added humidity from the evaporation of the street wash...

The City of Boston is making a bundle on towing today, and some people are gonna be PISSED! Especially if you consider that the no-parking signs only went up YESTERDAY and a lot of residents park there for days or even up to a week or more!

I had to leave and do errands this morning and I am So. Glad. that I have a garage space! It's days like this that I don't mind paying $325 a month of 24-hour concierge-attended garage parking!

Okay. Off to the gym to lift weights. Should be less people since most are preparing for PRIDE!!!

A smooth ending...

...to a busy week...

It was a good day today. How many times in your life can you actually say that?
I even took a break and went to Borders to get tea (yes, they sell my favorite tea) and even bought a couple of books on a spur of the moment. I stopped and got cute wrapping paper with an even cuter bow that kinda looks like crimson fireworks! And stopped and got my favorite lipstick. Actually, three of them (all the same color) and a lip liner. Anyway... yes, I had to go to the doctor but the fact that I added onto the outing says huge things. Like I can get out of my chair once in a while and move my body around...

And as for the doctor, she said I didn't need to get a stress test yet. But that she would do a CRP test to see if my heart has any inflammation. She is so cool. She always takes about an hour whenever I go in to see her - we mostly just sit and chat about regular life, and then we chat a little about my supplements, etc., and then the actually point of the meeting only takes like 10 minutes. Too funny!

I even left work a little early. Okay...It was on the 5:10 train but for someone who regularly works until at least 7pm or thereabouts, 5:10 is early early early. Never mind that the reason I did that was because our friends Jo&Luke were coming to town on their way to visit their family but that's just a minor point.

Had a great time at dinner. Went to the Red Fez. Afterwards, Joseph commented that that was the lightest dinner we've eaten in a long time. In my opinion, I think it's probably the lightest meal we've EVER eaten! And that is why Jo and Luke are so trim and slim even while eating out every night in NYC! I told him we should eat like that more often.

So the dinner conversation was interesting... I don't even know how we got onto the topic but we talked about Subarus and lesbians and how Cher wants to get a new car, and the Porsche I saw in Ohio, and Mini Coopers and how Jo got a BIG ASS ticket on the drive up today because she was driving (Luke was asleep) and she was singing and totally oblivious to the fact that she was going 90mph in a 55mph zone. Anyway... I always thought I was a tomboy. And tonight, I was duly told in no uncertain terms that I am a GIRLY GIRL! GAH!!!! I know that I am somewhat athletic. Joseph came to my defense on that. But I just don't want to spend a l0t of time honing skills - like going out and hitting 800 golfs ball every day for a week. Whatever. I would poke my eyes out! But a GIRLY GIRL??? BAH!!!! Just because I like pocket books and shoes and facials?? GAH!!!!! I have to think about this some more.

Well... after dinner, we went to Picco for ice cream. They just left to go to her parents' place - it's about a 2 hour ride I think.

Interestingly, Jo said she read my blog and wonder, "What the hell is going on with the pedometer?"

And all I could think of is "Jo read my blog?? She of so little patience actually READ MY BLOG?? What is the world coming to??"

I told her it's my journal and I can say anything I want. LOL!

Oh, tomorrow ought to be interesting. It's Pride Day... All day. Right around the corner the parade will go by... road closings, loud music, floats, peace love and harley riding dykes, lipstick lesbians, macho macho men, bead-bedecked people dressed in a rainbow of colors, men dressed as women, women dressed as men, women who look like men and men who look like women... yup yup yup... it's gonna be interesting...

  • Rest Day for running. Tomorrow I will go to the gym and lift.
  • Pedometer: 13941 steps = 6.380 miles = 544.5 calories in 2:06:58 hours. It's interesting the number of steps I took with ease considering that I worked in Boston today. It's a much more active place to work than the suburbs. Another reasons why there are more fat suburban people than city people? Maybe.

Prime position...

…for a change…

We are moving to the 8th floor.
Yup. We are moving again.
This time, I have an office closest to the window.
There is an aisle between my office and the window and around that "alley" is the copier/printer and the mail area. That means, I won't have far to walk to get mail or printouts. Especially since I have confidential stuff I print and I usually have to RUSH OVER to make sure that no one else gets to it before I do. I have seem some pretty dicey stuff left on these printers around here. What are people thinking??

Another good thing is that instead of overlooking South Station and the train tracks, this time we are overlooking the harbor. My view position is toward the city so I get a part of the harbor and most of the Federal Reserve building but I am not complaining! Nope. Where I sit right now, all I see are cubicles.

Our company has an interesting floor layout. Manager offices are on the INSIDE and the staff with cubicles are on the OUTSIDE - this means they get better views usually and more light than us "management units". This is the philosophy of the Chairman - that the working staff should get more light, etc., instead of the managers hogging all natural light and the working staff working under dungeon lighting. It's an enlightened view of the work area and we've been doing this since… well…it was in place when I got here about 14 years ago!

I just walked up to the new office to see what is going on. Egads! NOTHING is done! They are still working up there. It looks like they just got finished laying carpet. No doors, no windows, no furniture, there are patches and painting to be done… And we are moving NEXT FRIDAY! ACK! I have to be powered off and out of the office by 1pm next Friday. NEXT FRIDAY! I don't know how they are going to get all that work done in ONE WEEK! Should be interesting. We do have a great corporate real estate & facilities group here and they've always managed to pull off the seemingly impossible.

The other good thing about this place is that I am with the rest of the group - around the corner from my boss and the EVP - close but not too close, out of sight but not far enough to be out of mind… which is good since I get pretty loud. Not sure how the people in a different department sitting outside my office is going to feel about that. And they had better not put their phone ringers on too loud. I mean, I have to be able to hear myself think! GAH!!!

Doing better than before...

…with the workout routine.

First… I was going to run tomorrow instead of today but it wasn't raining out and I thought that day 3 of a workout routine wasn't exactly the best time bail on an 8-week training schedule that attempts to get you back into the swing of things. So I went out and ran for 20 minutes using the 2-2 run-walk pattern prescribed by The Coach. The running was fine considering that my thighs were a little achy (but not too bad) when I woke up. What I did feel was the effects of my upper body weight workout yesterday - biceps, outer lats, pecs near the arm attachment - at least I know the work out is, well… working. AND I am also wearing my handy dandy pedometer and am taking special care not to knock it off my person! Sheesh. All I need is another one to break and they are NOT CHEAP! GAH!!!

Drove to the RI office this morning and about a 100 feet into the drive of the company campus, what do I see? Lo and Behold, a female PEACOCK! So beautiful. I smiled and thought what a wonderous way to start the day. I also wondered where it came from but I think someone mentioned to me once that there is a bird sanctuary nearby. Hope no one hits it.

It is a hot day… thunder showers last night.. and more tonight. It is supposed to thunder-shower every day from now into next week sometimes! GAK! I did drive the Little Red Bean though and boy is it DUSTY! GAH!!! I feel like a lazy Little Red Bean Owner! ARG!!! This weekend I am going to the car wash to one of those self serve bays, and spend like THREE HOURS there washing the car and waxing it. Maybe not the waxing. It's a pain… I might get it detailed to get it waxed. I've also decided to order a flexible antenna so that it doesn't break when I go through the car wash (brushless, of course). And a touneau cover… keeps the hassle of putting the top up and down. I saw another red Miata in the parking garage this morning that had the touneau cover getup and it looked okay.

Anyway… Joseph took Dingle Doggie to the vet. She was walking around all lopsided. Her left ear was down and she was lethargic and shaking a lot - turns out she has an EAR INFECTION! GAH!!! Had it for a week AT LEAST!!! They cleaned it all out and gave her antibiotics and Joseph has to put the drops in her ears. They want to see her back in two weeks. POOR DINGLE!!! *SOB!!!* Stupid dog. I love her to death! BAH!!!

Good news at work. I am totally super duper energized. Who knew that three weeks of vacations in 5 weeks could be so motivating?? Also, I heard from my guys that someone in another group (in the same division) wants to come work for me. Thought that I was motivating and backed up my staff. LOL! Wait til he finds out that I am always firing people multiple times a day! And they keep showing up day after day! HAHAHA!!! That made me happy - shows that my people are happy and that it's contagious to other groups!

Exercise Note:

  • Running Note: 1.64 miles walk run (2-2) in 20 minutes. I feel so damn slow! Which I am. Whatever.
  • Pedometer note: Amazing. I only walked 4221 steps which translates to 1.93 miles. Amazing. This was due to my driving to the office and only walking around the building. Tomorrow should be interesting because I am in regular office in Boston, which I do more commuter walking to and from.

False alarm...

I opened up my broken pedometer this morning and to my joy, I saw numbers!!!
So I happily put it on and moved about the house.
After a while, I went downstairs to pack my lunch (and dinner), and took a peek.
ACK! NO NUMBERS!!! GAH!!!
They effing disappeared on me!
It's truly truly really broken. *SOB!*

Day 2 of the routine and I am doing alright. Went to the gym and did chest/back/arms. Also my PF is getting better. I can bend and stretch more deeply and longer than I have since it's onset. Thank goodness. AND it didn't bother me while I was running on Tuesday.

Of course it's Wednesday and I can't chart my weight because I FORGOT!
What a BONEHEAD I AM! GAH!!! I always forget to weigh myself.
Not sure if it's healthy or if it's denial…

Anyway... I ended up stopping by the store and getting another pedometer. Phew. Now I will know how far I am walking.

I need a vacation...

...and it's only been ONE DAY! GAH!!!

First of all... my pedometer is dead dead dead. Yup. I dropped it last night, the numbers went kablitzy and that was that. WAH!!!! No idea how much I walked today.

What a day at work. Meetings all day long. Didn't get home until about 8pm and then found out that Joseph's day wasn't much better. In fact, it might have been just a tad bit WORSE! And so, I got home and ordered Chinese delivery and we ate at 9pm. ARG!!! So much for the damn diet. I hate getting back from vacation - nothing in the house to eat, no food to pack, no eating right until I get back into the swing of things, which isn't usually until the weekend.

And poor Elizabeth. She had to wait for dinner on us. But Joseph did point out that if she's hungry, she has no problem going into whatever cupboard or whatever fill her tummy tum tum. She is so cute, she cracks me UP!!!

Exercise Note.
Started the running program. It's the "get back from injury and stay un-injured" program. Ran for 20 minutes using a 2min run, 2 min walk rotation. Felt good to get out but boy! Am I out of shape!!! YIKES! Tomorrow, I will do upper body weights in the morning.

No place like home...

We are BACK! As much as I love visiting Cher and Milt, and being in the idyllic setting of Muirfield, there is always never ever a place like home - coming back is always a sigh of relief for me. No matter what I am doing, how much fun I am having, where I am, I always spend the last few hours gearing up for the return trip. I don't realize that my stomach has tightened into a tiny little ball until I land and am home - and that massive ball of tension releases itself and it turns back into my stomach. Interesting phenomenon. Depending on where I am, it might happen days ahead or just as the plane takes off. Coming from Ohio, it's the latter since I always have such a good visit with Cher and Milt. Next year, we will go back to the Eddie Bauer outlet and I will pack even less so that I can buy more stuff. HAH! And we need to get out to the course at 7am to catch Tiger Woods and bring my White Tiger Woods hat so that I can get him to sign it. He gets out there early for the practice rounds to avoid everyone. I don't blame him from what I saw of the crowds that followed him!

Elizabeth gave us a hug when we got in and the dingle doggie wagged her whole back half of her body, she was so happy to see us! The doggie walker hasn't been by - I hope she is not too sick - she was sick with "exhaustian" a couple weeks ago… Joseph will have to check up on her.

Now I am in full work mode. GAH!!! Lots of emails as I boarded the plane and then when I landed and now I have lots of things due by the end of the day, yadda yadda yadda… And Joseph is going to a work function… a wine tasting held by the head of the a major division… We might meet him somewhere for dinner. I haven't even unpacked except for my wonder adidas massaging flipflops...

And Elizabeth is practicing her violin… What beautiful sounds….

Uh oh… 1 mile on the pedometer… BLAST! Gotta get cracking….
Tomorrow I start my training plan to get up and running.

I want to qualify for Boston… I will lose weight - going on a damn diet…
Cher looks GREAT! She weighs what I should be weighing! And what I DID weigh like two years ago before I married Joseph and got all FAT AND HAPPY! GAK!

I have so much to do!!!

Another day in the life of the leisure set...

...can be hot hot hot...

Especially if it is 88 degrees out and you are sitting in the sun at the green of the 6th hole, watching all the players come by. Four hours and a bit of sunburn later, we are back at the house.

We had about 45 minutes of solitude until a whole entourage of people came by - these are new people... we haven't met them before... but I guess they are friends of Cher and Milt's because Milt brought them on over.

It's been a great week. Tomorrow, we are leaving for home. Our flight takes off around 12:20 pm.

Scott, the Camera Man, came by and gave me a big hug. Told us to come back for a Buckeyes football game. I told him to nag Cher and we'd do the same on our part and maybe she will get us some tickets! We would fly out for that and I would be happy to se The Best Damn Band in the Land again! Maybe by then, I'll bring my own camera out to show Scott what I got!

I can't believe we have to go back to work in a couple of days! Blech...

At least I got to walk around in my Nike Frees and exercise my feet. I hope they are making my feet stronger - they are supposed to. Not sure if I will run in them, though. We'll see how it goes when I start my training next week. Yup. Starts on Tuesday. Now I have to figure out my schedule. PF is getting better. I am able to move my legs and flex in more positions now before the pain in the heel starts. The pain is more intense when I do get it to hurt, but it's not as frequent as it used to be a week ago. I've been stretching my calves like crazy and think that is definitely helping.

We decided to stay in for dinner tonight. Then we went to Graeters for ice cream. YUM! I had a kiddie sized toffee chip with a dabble of butterscotch and this time I ate the WHOLE THING! We went outside to finish our scoops and Cher said something about someone looking like Sluman. So, of course, I stood there and stared, squinted, scratched my head, and tried to imagine him in a hat and golf clothes instead of blue jeans and regular white t-shirt. I think he noticed that I noticed. Anyway, I became convinced it was him when he stood up and started walking. He has a very very distinctive walk. His wife was very pretty, and he had a little girl - about 5, I'd say, but the website says she's around 7 years old. She's a tiny little thing.

Ugh. I cannot believe that I have to go back to work. I really really like not working!
