Exercise notes...

Things are getting busy at work again.
So, now that I am taking a bit of a breather, thought I should log in my workouts for the week so far.

Monday was a rest day - self imposed.
Tuesday was an easy run.
Yesterday, I had a second wind so I ran for 60 minutes. It was the longest since Big Sur in April. And it felt good!
This morning, I did another recovery run and did arms for strength training.
So far so good.

The weight is down a few ounces. We'll see what happens next Monday.

I think that's about it.
I am still thinking about getting rid of my gym membership. Haven't decided. I am paying $72 a month for it and I think I've been in there about 3 times. Three. Times. I know that the minute I get rid of it, I am going to regret it. I will have some stupid reason why I need to go to the gym almost every day and get very frustrated. I am at an indecision point. Sigh... Very rare for me.

Weekly Recap

Okay. I wasn't going to do it but I will...

This week I need to do more running and get in a couple more weight workouts for the arms.

Random Thoughts...

One of the best things about working from home is that I can make a hot cupotea using real boiled water with my favorite loose tea in a tea strainer.

And adding honey from the Apple Barn for just a tad touch of sweetness...

Someone from work thinks we should do F1 racing for the group holiday event, complete with buffet. I asked, "HOW MUCH!" We will see what they come back with.

I've gotten a ton of work done today and I would never have been able to do this much had I been at the office. Seriously. I am just crossing things right off my todo list. Of course, now I am procrastinating since I need to start writing end of year performance reviews. I hate writing these.

The most important this is the bonus dollars.

It's nice to make people happy - yesterday I told someone on my team that they got promoted into a hard-earned, well-deserved director/architect slot. She seemed happy but after waiting so long and holding her breath for so long, I hope it wasn't too anti-climatic. The next step will be even harder to attain... VP level technical position.

I need to call my brother night about Christmas.

My sister has awoken from her slumber and is emailing me today about the New House. Uh... did you read my other emails on our progress? You need to catch up.

Okay... back to those reviews.

Working from home...

...all the rest of the week...
That is what I am doing.

I looked on my calendar and I decided that everything that was scheduled can be done from home.

The hour and a half commute between changing, and commuting, will help me from having to work until almost EIGHT O'CLOCK PEE EMM like I did last night.

I also plan on running for 60 minutes today.

I didn't get my long run in this weekend. Instead, I painted for about 4 hours. And My back was killing me yesterday morning so I decided to take a rest day. I feel better today and want to get that long run in.

My hives seem to be getting better without the shredded wheat and the soap. The itchies are not as frequent and not as insistent. I cannot want for this to be over!

Time to have breakfast. Rice, soft tofu and a soysauce mixture to drizzle on top. YUM! This is going to be my standard breakfast, I think.

Exercise and Allergies

First... I managed an easy 2.3 mile recovery run this morning. I used the HRM to keep my HR within the recommended 60-70% range for a recovery run. I had to run reeeeeeally slowly but I did it. Then I finished off with bicep curls and tricep extensions - 2 sets of 15 reps at 10 pounds each. I might take a look at possibly increasing the weight during the next session.

So... after my run and lifting session, I was in the shower when I noticed more itching, more hives and this time, they were all over my nect and upper back across the shoulders. And it hit me that this might be a food allergy. I hadn't considered that because my diet is pretty much the same most of the time. Nothing has changed. Except for the cereal I've been eating in the morning for the past 2-3 weeks! Could it be? Cereals? I've been eating shredded wheat - and of course, I had this revelation after I had eaten yet another bowl of shredded wheat! ARG!

When Joseph came home from his run, I told him about this and he thought it made sense. He thinks it's the cereal of the milk. Milk? I don't normally drink a lot of milk - only a bit in my coffee in the mornings and whatever is added to food as an ingredient. He thinks it could be something in the milk or quite possibly, the cereal - I've had cereal before but never for any length of time - it might be a day here or a day there - and quite frankly, I've never had shredded wheat before.

I am laying off the cereal to see if it's the culprit. It will probably take a week or so but the hives should stop spreading and, hopefully, the itching will subside.

For good measure, I am also going back to my Apian soap that I know my skin loves, just in case it's the soap. But I don't think it is - I've been using some new stuff for over 2 months and it would have hit me sooner than this, I think.

How many people are allergic to cereal? Maybe there is a medical reason for my natural instincts to have to rice for breakfast...

New Floooooors!!!

First, the place to shop the day after Thanksgiving is Home Depot.
We went there to get lights and it was like another ordinary day without the bugged-eyed claw-eyed red-faced bargain shoppers. We bought three lights for the three third floor bedrooms, a new medicine cabinet for the second floor bathroom along with an overhead fan-light combo and an overhead two-light light for above the medicine chest. The medicine cabinet mirror is all glass and a bit modern for this bath but it's simple and it will blend (hopefully) with the black and white tile.

We took all of our purchases to the New House and I smelled what I thought was paint. I thought it was interesting that it still smelled like paint when it had been a week since I painted the room. Then we walked up to the third floor, Joseph leading the way and I, trailing behind in my usual slow manner, followed him up blindly looking at my feet. We got to the top and Joseph took his shoes off, and I didn't think much about it and I took my shoes off, and then I stepped onto the third floor and looked down and... and... and... NEW FLOOOOOOOORS!!!!!

During the week, Joseph had had Scotty the Contractor do the floors. A little sanding and poly and they are just BEAUTIFUL!!! They are the old wider plank floors and they are a deep golden russet brown. They surely do spiffy up the place.

Another wonderful note is the I do NOT need a second coat of paint in that First Room I painted last weekend. Other than a little touch up on the walls where Joseph re-spackled and finishing up inside the closet, I can start on the ceiling. Not sure what I am going to do with the trim yet.

When I remember to take the camera over to the house, I will post pictures of the paint job and the NEW FLOOOOOOOOORS.

I think I am becoming really cheap.

I collect Life is Good t-shirts.
I've seen a lot of nice new ones in catalogs and magazines in the last 4 months.
I make a note to order them, and then I think about how they cost $22 each and then I don't order them.

I love these shirts!
I have a half dozen already.
Actually, more than that... but I don't want to count or I might shoot myself...
I need more long sleeve ones for the winter.

I am becoming Scrooge in my dotage...

Black Friday and Sundry Ruminations

I can't believe that people turn into greedy little green headed monsters with red bulging eyes and hands that turn into claws on this one-of-the-biggest shopping days of the year - and all for a mere 25% off. Okay. It may be more than that, but they replenish the stocks and the stuff won't float off the planet if you do not buy it today on this particular day, and the prices DO come down. So what if it's not the exact same one you saw in that circular? It never is!

My time is worth way more than that and my sanity is way too valuable to waste, and well, life is just too short to spend it in a chaotic cess pool of over-commercialized greed-driven humanity.

Don't get me started or I'm likely to tell you have I really feel...

The start of Black Friday was pretty good. I slept for 9 hours and felt really refreshed. I think that I need to just generally got more than just 7 hours sleep - my internal mechanisms are so wound tight during the day, I think I need more than the usual amount of rest to rejuvenate. Of course, that means I can only sleep, work, and work out - to the exclusion of almost everything else. Or I could just (gasp!) prioritize what's important and just stick to those few items. Sort of like my Five Friends List. They are my most important. Once day I will make a list of my Lists. I love Lists.

I then got a leisurely start to the Upstairs-Tenant-Neighbor's apartment to run on her treadmill. She is in LA this winter and next Spring to teach at UCLA - still renting the apartment and storing her wonderful treadmill there. Anyway, I ran for 40 minutes. I cannot believe how signing up for a Spring marathon can just turn on the desire to train and get back into shape. It's also helping to improve my overall mood.

I've decided to run for time, this training season and see where it gets me. I told my Hunny Bunny that at some point, I need to run miles instead of times. And he asked why?
I said, "because I need to make sure I am running far enough."
He said, "why won't you run far enough if you run for time as long as the time gets longer?"
I said, "how will I know if I've run 20 or 22 miles?"
He said, "because you will be running for 3, 3 1/2 hours... isn't that how long you usually do your longest runs?"
Hmmm.... uh..... hmmm.... That's true. Hmmm.... Okay.

I like running for time. I can schedule it into my calendar much better. I know I will need 15 minutes to prepare, and 30 minutes to shower and change regardless of how long I run. Being time-bounded, I don't have to worry about running too slowly or not running fast enough to get those miles in on those days when I am tired and not feeling so well. Yes. That is a HUGE stressor, which totally defeats the purpose of running to destress. Anyway, I can always run for 30-40-50 minutes, or whatever.

This morning, I also decided that as long as I am on the treadmill, I can do recovery runs in the correct heart rate zone. So instead of walking, I will try running - verrrrrry slowwwwwly.

Anyway, I got to thinking about time.
What would I do if I had more time?
I don't mean time for vacations and world travel but the kind of ordinary time that gives you another hour or two a day, every day, including weekends. Or even the kind of time you gain if you had a part time job that allowed you to work 4-6 hours a day instead of a job where you are working 9-12 hours a day (like MY *&^%$!!! job).

So I made a list:
  1. Spend more time at the gym - maybe spend 2-3 hours a day working out
  2. Listen to music, download, and reconfigure my iPod
  3. Photograph more and create albums, calendars and other things for family and friends.
  4. Sew
  5. Volunteer at a homeless shelter or a woman's shelter
  6. Catalog all my travel information - places I've been, places I want to go
  7. Put together travelogues of places I've been complete with pictures and video diary
  8. Read
  9. Meditate and study religion more
  10. And last but not least, be able to drop everything when my Hunny Bunny is near, so that I can just be there in his presence and share life at that moment with him
I wonder how other people would spend their time?

Rash Note

They are still coming out and still itchy.
I am feeling calmer, though.
And the cooking helped today - I love to cook and the big Thanksgiving dinner cooking event helped me relax quite a bit.

I might have to call my doctor and let her know I can't wait three weeks to see that dermatologist.

Exercise Note.
Nothing. I was going to walk for 30 minutes but it takes a long time to cook a Thanksgiving dinner, no matter how small your turkey is.

Tomorrow, I have 40 minutes on the schedule.

Thanksgiving Thoughts

A cup of milk is easily absorbed by a cup of mini shredded wheats.
I wonder if it counts as drinking a cup of milk if that milk is inside of tiny plump mini shredded wheat filled with that cup of milk...

The smell of baking turkey is enough to send little children, adults, and dingle doggies into a tizzy. Why does it smell so good? And WHY is it that 2 hours into the cooking process, I have no turkey juice in the pan?? I wonder what I'll do about the gravy...

We are staying home today. A nice easy day to relax and de-stress. And we all know that I can do with a bit of de-stressing. I have long list of things to do but the Soduku book keeps beckoning me. I am doing better, seeing numbers and patterns, and even managed to complete a couple in the HARD section. Due to my anal nature I am doing the puzzles consecutively, one at a time... this is the 6th one in the Hard Section... 2 out of 6 isn't bad for now. I wonder what Joseph will do when I finish all the puzzles in his soduku book...

Elizabeth is coming over for dinner. She's not here yet. But she'll be here when she gets here - the turkey dinner is for her, after all. I had packed the pans but after she announced she wanted Thanksgiving with us, I found my turkey pan and went to the store. I even bought stuff for Chocolate Chip cookies and ice cream for Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Sandwiches for dessert.

Joseph bought me beautiful Thanksgiving flowers the other day.
He does this every year. And every year, I forget he does this, until he does this.

Speaking of... Joseph ran a 5k this morning. He went alone. This is the first time I haven't gone to a race with him regardless of whether I am running or not. I chose to stay home, but after the initial anxiety of not going with him, I had plenty to do for Thanksgiving, so I calmed down a bit.

Oh... Before I forget, because I seem to forget a lot these days...

Big Round Calorie Monster!!

One Pillsbury Giant Oatmeal Raisin Cookie.
180 calories.



Total Caloric intake, however, was less than 2000.

Now, one online site said I should take in only 1200 calories.
Are they kidding?
I've been waking up hungry around 2am these past couple of nights and I've been eating around 1800-2000 calories. I can't imagine how much I've been eating before that this many calories actually aren't enough to keep the hunger away. Jeez.

I think 1800 is a good start.


Heard on the news this morning...two people are being interviewed after a major explosion of a chemical plant up in Danvers and one of them says...
"I ran outside, and my neighbor was out too, and I don't know the area, I'm

Itchy, Moods

As in Itchy Elbows and Moods, not Itchy Moods....

My elbows are itchy... it's a first....

My back of the knee area itched a little right around 2:30pm, like clockwork, but I was able to refrain... a first in a long time...

My Mood is much better than it has been in about a month.
Much much better....

The meds are working...

Feeling Better

Day two on the old regimen and I am feeling almost myself again.

I took another dose of antihistamine last night - it's 24 hour and you aren't supposed to take more than 1 per 24 hours (so says the box), but I took 1 per 12 hours. So shoot me. My head hasn't fallen off yet. It will take a week for the stuff to permeate through my bloodstream and hopefully, next week I will be back to my chipper ole self. Less tired, too, I might add.

This morning, I got up and walked 30 minutes on the treadmill. I hiked it up to a 4.5% incline to make things more interesting and, you know what, I FELT GOOD. And no. My legs did NOT fall off from the additional non-running exercise!

After the workout (you might want to sit down for this), I also did bicep curls and tricep extensions, 2 sets of 15 reps each. I have to start somewhere. If I feel good about the routine, I will add another exercise... but I won't worry about it until I decide I have to worry about it, ya know?

In reviewing my plan for VCM (what plan?), I've concluded that going from basically ZERO (as in the big fat GOOSE EGG) to a marathon at the end of May is, um, well... it can be rather ambitious. Having said that, I've done somewhat of a plan to get me to running up to 2 hours on the weekend. After that, I will have a good sense of what my mileage is, and hopefully, my weight will have dropped by a few pounds. Then I will go back to running for miles... on the weekend - I want to get in at least one 20 miler and one 22 miler. I might have to call in my old coach. Hmmm... wonder what he will think of that...

This marathon is to just finish (the cut off is 6 hours and jeez, if I can't finish a marathon in under six hours, just shoot me...). I would like to finish and be able to walk afterwards. Like I said before, it's just to get me back into the swing of things. And my mood should be maximally better long before then - like, oh... I am thinking in a week, I need to be in a better mood or I will just shoot my miserable self.

Tomorrow, I plan on running for 35 minutes on the treadmill... woo hoo... Right.

I am working myself up! YES! That is what I am doing!!! Sheesh.

House Note: Pick up another can of Corinthian White and a can of Old Country last night. I can only carry two cans of paint at a time (two hands, remember?) so tonight I will go over and get another two cans of paint - Thunderbird, for the third floor landing. Tomorrow, I hope to leave work early - after my 2-3pm meeting - so that we can go over to the house and do some work. We also have to go get LIGHTS! ARG! I keep forgetting about the lights. Anyway, I am anxious to see how the painting came out in the First Room on the Third Floor. Hopefully, it won't require another coat of wall paint and I can continue on to the ceiling.

I am in a good mood and happy right now... nothing has changed really - same old workload, same ole job, same ole fat self.. same ole same ole...

Amazing what drugs and exercise does for a person...

I did it

I just registered for Vermont City Marathon.
The whole marathon.
If Cher wants me to run the relay with her, I'll do that too.

I didn't talk to anyone.
I didn't ask anyone.
I just did it.

And if it ends up that I can't make it, then so be it.

But for now, it's what I need.
I needed to just sign up.
I needed to just do it.

It is strangely liberating.
So much so that I feel like crying.

Now I am contemplating The Big Lake Half.

A New Beginning... far this morning, I've cancelled all my meetings...

I am still recovering from my over-stimulated weekend.
I am still coming back up from my histamine misery.
I feel slightly better.

I am also energized about the New Plan to take control of things.
So far so good.

This morning, I managed to get in a 30 minute run.
I have blocked off every single week day morning until 10am, when I will leisurely walk into the office to start the work day.

I also need a goal.

My good friend Cher is thinking about The Big Lake Half Marathon in May. I also want to run Vermont City Marathon to get in another state - that is over Memorial Day weekend. I think that can work if I do a cool down of about 5 miles after the half marathon... I am going to register for both. I need something to look forward to and work toward.

I think it's time to join the living once again.

Weekly Recap and some insights

It's been a long, tiring week.

Last week, I:
- ran twice (at least one of the runs was 50 minutes long)
- gained .8 pounds (wrong direction, yet again)

I had an interesting coversation with Joseph.
He said that he told our good friend Cher that she needed to run x times a week, consume no more than 9 glasses of alcohol, etc etc etc.
I found it rather intriguing and after months and months of lamentation and whining about my weight, my lack of stamina, my lack of a life, blah blah blah... I think I hit my aha! moment.

I also have been getting stressed out about everything.
Everytime I say something, Joseph says something back. He thinks we are having a conversation, I think he is arguing. My blood pressure goes up, my adrenaline increases, more histamine in my body is released and I am basically miserable and unhappy.

Suddenly, I am putting two and three together.
My rashes, my itchiness, my irritability, etc... all due to stress and the adrenal and histamine reactions in my body. It started in college - I'd break out in hives so bad that I had to be tranquilized, and sleep the stress away for 36 hours at a time.

I realized a few things -
  1. I haven't been taking my anti-histamine - for at least a month or a few weeks anyway.
  2. Exercise has been a HUGE stress reliever and I haven't been running or exercising enough in any shape or form
  3. And I need to resolve to lose weight - all body reactions get out of whack for me even with a 5 pound gain.
  4. Without the exercise, I get stressed out, which leads my body to reach, and without taking my medicine to keep things in check, I become a miserable human being without any desire to do anything - depression hits and I can't get out of my hole - it happened in college and I can feel it happening it again...
Ahah! Ahah! Ahah!

So, I am resolved.
  • I need to do some form of exercise EVERY SINGLE DAY!
  • I will take in no more than 9 glasses of alcohol in a week. That might seem like a lot but it's once glass of wine with dinner and two glasses on Saturday and Sunday.
  • I will take my antihistimine EVERY SINGLE DAY!
  • I will eat my cereal in the morning and eat light at night.
  • If I must eat alone at work, then so be it. Joseph has told me he is a big boy and can take care of himself. He has encouraged me for MONTHS to do this and I keep refusing to believe that it's okay to do this.
  • I will adjust what I eat to the time of day - if I have to eat dinner late, I will have a soup and some salad, etc. I did this the other night and I did not die! Sheesh.

I am almost at peace with this plan. Almost. If I had taken my medicine all along I'd be able to get relaxed enough to be truly at peace but since I haven't, I can only be so peaceful, ya know???

I am looking forward to peace in the coming days. May there be peace on earth and let it start with me...

Sunday Sundries

House Note: I put on the first coat of paint in the first room on the third floor. The work is in the prepping. I washed the wood work and any obvious dirt from the walls. And then taped all the trim and the corners where the ceiling meets the walls. That took a long time. But the painting flew by! I used almost a whole can of paint. We aren't sure if it need two coats yet. I have to get more cans of paint. A LOT more. The Corinthian White is a nice color. I am painting the ceiling Old Country which is a light dusty mauvy color in the Benjamin Moore White Color family.

Elizabeth picked out her bedroom - it's on the third floor and the first room we were working on. It needed a lot of work, so it will be the second or third bedroom I will be painting. She wants the same Corinthian White walls and a darker cream color for the ceiling.

We have decided that the walls on the third floor landing will be blue. Joseph and I picked out the color last night.

We are not sure what color the workout room will be. But we will need two overhead fans - the room is nice and long.

This week we have to get overhead lights...nothing fancy or too expensive. But something nice enough to tide us over for another 2-3 years until we redo the rooms with wall paper and in their final styles.

If I can ever remember take my camera over, I'll take pictures of the progress to date.

Exercise Note. Didn't do much, just worked on the house. The other day, Joseph and I were discussing how many calories this type of physical activity takes and over course we were arguing. So he looked it up on the i nternet and discovered that painting, scraping, moving boxes, etc., all require about 250 calories per house. Wow. Who knew? We worked on the house for about 4-5 hours - the conservative estimate is that I used up about 800 calories. And carrying boxes up and down stairs do count as a weight workout for the legs. It all helped justify the filet mignon we had for dinner. And the 2 glasses of wine.

Today, Joseph took me to a new place to eat in Coolidge Corner, Rubin's Kosher Deli & Restaurant. It has now become one of my new favorite places to eat! And it's only two blocks from the house! I had two potatoe Latkes (they are like pancakes) smothered with fresh hot sliced corned beef, accompanied by a half sour pickle. It was expensive but well worth every penny. I smothered it with their special brown spicy mustard, accompanied by a Dr. Brown root beer. Well. I can say that I will have a hard time ordering anything else on the menu.

And what is it about TONGUE? It's everywhere. Blech.

Family Thanksgiving

The lovely think about attending Joseph's Granny's Annual Family Thanksgiving event is blowing in and blowing out.

Typically, Joseph likes to spend the weekend at his parents' house and make a long thing of it.

For me, it's like stimulation hell.
Too many people I don't know.
Too many people I don't see often enough.
Too many people hugging, touching, and talking to me.
It's a mental hell and I am exhausted by the end of it.
In an hour, I am ready to leave.
Or I am just ready to cry.
Okay. So I am an introvert, what can I say...

Joseph's sister Judi understands. She's a big time Extravert with the Capital E.
She has a son who is such a intravert that they prepare for these events for days before it actually happens. She understands how difficult it is, how you have to brace yourself, how you have to breath deeply and slowly and remind yourself that it will all be over in a few hours. She came up to me about 2 hours into the event and asked me how I was doing. She said she understood. That meant a lot.

This year was better than most because we drove in for the lunch, ate, and then left. Typically, we go back to the house and I deal with the family who are all staying there together at his parents - the kids, the adults... and his mother is a big time Extravert. How can you tell your mother-in-law to go away and leave you alone and will you just stop talking and no, I don't really care to talk about that... blah blah blah - especially when she is the nicest mother-type you've ever met and even if you have her to thank for the wonderful son you married? No. You can't. You can never ever do that. She knows how I am but she just can't help herself! Sigh...

Anyway, it was nice to see Joseph's Uncle Mike and Uncle John - I love them both - big ole teddy bears. And I love his Aunt Leslie. She is quiet and sweet and isn't in my face all the time. His Aunt Silva is another story - always trying to talk to me. GAH! GO AWAY!!!

Anyway... it was a nice dinner - Uncle John is a great cook. And it was good to see Joseph's sisters and the kids. And his mom and Dad.

It was also good to leave. I fell asleep in the car from exhaustion. I finally figured out why I always sleep in the car after we leave his parents'. Too much stimulation. Time to regenerate. I should have a regeneration unit. Sort of like the Borg.

Exercise Note:
I got home and ran for 50 minutes.
It felt really good - just me and the treadmill, my iPod and my feet whirring away to nowhere.

Tired and itchy

Can I just tell you how hard it is to find a dermatologist in this town?? GAH!!!

I spent about 2 hours this morning, making all sorts of phone calls. Most are NOT taking new patients and if they are, I have to wait until January or April. Of 2007. YES. OR you have to be so sick that your primary doctor makes a referral and you can "cut in line."

I have had this rash on the back of my leg since Reach the Beach in September. And now, it's moved over from the right side to the left side and my right side is splotch with little bumps and it's spread up and out. And it itches. Twice a day. That's right. TWICE A DAY! And then it stops itching once I've scratched the bejeezums out of it! It doesn't hurt but the blood vessels that the little rash dots are on top of is more prominent - not like a bruise exactly but more like veracose veins but they don't pop out. Very strange.

Anyway, I finally got into an appointment this morning with a nurse practitioner at my regular doctor's office since she is out of the country. WTF? And she gave me a sample of some ointment and said if it doesn't get better in a week to call and she will get me into dermatology at Mass General. I can tell you it won't work on the bumps. But it might work on the other non-bump rash and the two rashes I have at my temples. It's so odd. She didn't think is was eczema and it's definitely not psoriasis. I bet I have some stoopid blood diseases which is causing my underlying dema layer to react which is coming out as stoopid pappules that itch twice a day! ARG!!!

In the meantime, I have made an appointment for December 11th with another doctor who was taking appointments. Thank goodness.

I hope I don't break out into one just rash by then.

I am thinking of ditching the gym I never go to and getting a personal trainer at a personal training gym.

I used to have one.
About 10 years ago.
For about 3 or 4 years.
I weight 128 and wore a size 5/6 pair of GAP jeans.
I looked great.
I felt great.
And I hadn't reach my potential.

She said, just hand over your eating to me. I only need three months. Just three months. I should have listened.

She was like Jillian from last season on The Biggest Loser with a lot of Bob mixed in.

I want her back but she's in Tampa now.


If I can't have Kathleen, I want Bob.

Cloning is good

I need three more of me to do all the work I have to do.
Nothing I have is task oriented.
They are all large-scale, overarching strategies and each of these things have complex sub-initiatives and I have to deal with lots of people across the whole company!

Anyway, I am sitting here after so many meetings and each meeting has produced yet another strategy I have to attend to because if I don't, then things will tank.

Anyway, I had a free day thinking I could catch up.

But things started flying early.
7:30 am early.
And I still haven't gotten to the things I was going to get done.

I am totally spent right now.

I've hit the motherlode...

...of all boxes...

It's the 6th floor.
Of course, I had to pass through the 7th floor which was like landing in Bangalore! And it had WEIRD and I MEAN WEIRD cubicle stuff going on...

I gotta get out more.

Anyway, on the 6th floor, I ran into people I knew (one of which is a PIA and don't care too much for) and found out they all moved in about 3 weeks ago. That means BOXES!!! As people unpack and continue to unpack, boxes will give way to more boxes!!

I scored two more folding boxes and 1 more paper box.

Free at last, free at last...

...I am free until 2pm.

Now I can get some REAL WORK DONE!!!!

I will have to move my box-finding-mission onto another floor.

It's not that we don't have paper boxes.
We have LOTS of them,
They are just filled with paper and I would have to empty out all of the boxes and that is just wayyyy too much work.

I wonder if I should move a floor up or a floor down.
I think I'll check it out during lunch.

And I love them.

Yes, it's a love hate kinda thing.

I hate Mondays because it's back to the same ole grind. And I regret not being able to do all the things I had to do on the weekend that I have to do the coming weekend. I never manage do everything I need to do.

But I also love Mondays because it's the start of another week. Back to the same ole grind. Yes. Yes yes yes... I know. It's predictable. I get back into a routine at work, I know what's (basically) around the corner, I know the direction in which I am headed, I know what is on the schedule (basically - other than all the damn interruptions), I know what I am going to eat... I keeps me grounded, firmly planted in the "here and now" - otherwise, I would be doing nothing but writing down my plans for the future, living through pieces of paper that hold my life schedule for however long Ive managed to plan for at that moment. Someone once told me that he felt I always lived in the future, and never seemed to enjoy today - no matter how much I accomplish. Well... isn't it all about the journey? Some of us are impatient - with ourselves, with life, with people around us - generally in a state of discontent - and this contents us...

If it weren't for people who are always looking ahead or around the corner, how would we progress? If it weren't for the people who were willing to risk the dangers of "going ahead", where would the followers be? Someone's got to do it...

Anyway... I scored BIG on the box front this morning.
First, I need paper boxes. I managed to find three, which I will take home today.
But I also found 30 folding moving boxes! Yahoo!
If I take home 3 paper boxes and 2 folding moving boxes a day, I will need until the end of the month to take them all home.

I might have to drive in this weekend and pick them up.

Exercise Note: My knee was bothering me this morning, so I walked 1.91 miles on the upstairs-tenant-neighbor's treadmill. It was wet and on the raw-er side this morning.

Neighbor Note: Our upstairs-tenant-neighbor's dog, Mo, died from internal injuries after he ate a tennis ball. This happened last week. That big ole loveable gallump of a dog. I am so sad and so sorry for our upstairs-tenant-neighbor. Mo and Dingle Doggie were in love. Poor Cass. It's all so so so sad.

Sunday Recap

ARG! I keep forgetting to take the camera to the house!!!! PFFFTTTT!!!

I'll remember next time.
I have to keep telling myself that.

So far, I am a master scraper.
I scraped the ceiling of Bedroom 2 on the Third Floor. It's a small room with slanted walls so the ceiling footprint is small. However, once I got started, the whole thing almost scraped off! Yikes. I was wondering if I was doing it right but Joseph came in and gave me his nod of approval. Except for the spot on the he spackled last week which I scraped off. Hmmmm...

Abby and Mike came over with burritos for lunch. They were a bit overwhelmed with the work that needed to be done. Abby kept laughing and shaking her head. But she does that a lot. She also brought us a good luck pig. Too funny. She's a hoot with the kind of things she gives you. Anyway, it's in a special safe place on the shelf of the book case in the hallway (which I don't think has moved for about 40 years...)

We had a bunchastuff we were throwing out. I remembered a guy who drove by last week and took a bunchastuff off the curb and I was wondering if he would be by again. As luck would have it, I had put out about 4 boxes on the curb, and another 3 on the porch with ab out 6 or 7 in one of the bedrooms on the second floor. The doorbell rang and it was the guy who drove by last week. He took almost everything - from the curb, from the porch, from the second floor bedroom. He even went through the books on the two book shelves and now we only have a couple of old speakers, half the books we had before and a couple of sundry items to throw out on trash day next week. Yahoo. One man's trash is this guy's treasure.

The couple came by to look at our current place. She owns the card store around the corner where I got our wedding invitations a few years ago. And he is some sort of computer person who travels a lot. They are putting in an application and if all goes well, they want to move on Dec 1. YIKES! I must speed up my packing!!! Thank goodness we aren't going anywhere for Thanksgiving!

Exercise Note: Nothing, unless you consider walking up and down the stairs 20 times moving heavy boxes exercise. Okay. So, we'll call it weight lifting.

Food Note: Nothing outstanding. But then again, nothing to help weight loss either. Elizabeth the Niece came over for dinner. It was nice seeing her. She makes me so happy. Anyway, she wanted cookies and of course, we didn't have any dough. So she ran out to the 7-11 and bought a packet. I had two with a glass of milk. Milk, I understand, is supposed to help you lose weight.

Elizabeth also bought some very nice and spanky red rain galoshes at Kate Spade. Hmmm... I might have to take a walk up there and have a little look-see. If I am going to be standing in the ran for the green line because we moved to Brookline... I might need to invest in a pair... Hmmm.... I wonder if they have in orange...

Speaking of Paint...

....I am going to do something completely different (for me) and paint the ceiling Old Country, which is a muted soft coral-pink color, and the trim a third color.

All of this was vetted and approved by the 19 year old niece who came for dinner tonight.

Now, I wonder what goes with Pale Smoke?

Saturday Recap

So... it's nice being back home from traveling.

Speaking of traveling, my trip to India may be delayed. Too bad. Basically, the flight is no problem. It's the hotel. The only hotels available are 4-star. You do not want to stay in a 4-star hotel in India. My manager over there is going to see if there is anything available that we don't know about here in the States and get back to us tomorrow. The first available time for the hotel of choice, The Leela Palace, is end of February. Not good. I might have to delay until March which isn't good for the person traveling with me. Sigh... making arrangements is as stressful as the traveling!

This week, I ran 3 times. Felt good although this morning's run was a bit difficult - got overly winded for some reason. Of course, I've done no strength training. As for the weight, I've lost 2.4 pounds. But that's a bit deceiving considering I was up last Monday by a whole pound from when I weighed last Sunday.

In terms of other forms of exercise, packing and moving is a lot of work. A LOT of work. Basically, packing big boxes, carry them up a flight of stairs, taking them from the car to the upstairs of the New House... my legs are getting quite a workout, as are my arms, back, shoulders, etc. I am achy-tired all over... Tomorrow should be fun.

The Rental Agent showed the house this morning. It was very last minute; we had about 30 minutes to get out of the house. The husband came alone because the wife was working and he liked it enough that they want to come back to see it again tomorrow morning. They are interested in Dec 1st as a move-in date. This means, I've got to step up the packing. Yikes. I thought I'd have until January! And the New House doesn't even begin to be ready for us to move into! ARG!!!!!

This afternoon, we took some boxes over the New House. Joseph's father and mother had come in for a couple of days and put in circuit breakers. And his mother cleaned the bathroom and the kitchen. It looks wonderful! So HAPPY they did this. They cleared out before I got to Boston from my Dallas trip. Hope they are out here again soon.

Joseph also had a big surprise. I want to strip all the woodwork in the house. And there is a LOT of woodwork. I've gone the whole route with liquid strippers (too stinky, toxic and messy), and heat guns (too dangerous and easy to scorch the wood) without a lot of success. Both methods are back-breaking work. He mentioned Peel-Away but I've tried that too and it takes too long. You put it on, leave it over night, come back and peel back the paper and repeat until all the paint is off the wood. Joseph did a little research and we are now the proud owners of The Silent Paint Remover. How does it work? Let's just say that I stripped more paint off of a single door in about 1 1/2 hours than I could have in a days worth of work using a heat gun (which is faster than the liquid stripper method). Joseph found a place in Missouri or someplace like that sells it for much less than the usual $1100 or $1300 that you see everywhere. He got it for something like $700 including this gigantical complete scraping kit! I am going to be so happy using this tool!! YAHOO! The only thing I noticed is that it's hard with the intricate moldings and the corners. I might need a different strippers for the finer detailed work but I'll see how it goes.

Speaking of wood, went to the store and got two mini cans of stain to try out - dark walnut and a lighter medium walnut shade. Also picked up a can of Benjamin Moore Corinthian White for the third floor bedroom and a can of Benjamin Moore Pale Smoke for the bathroom. If I don't like the colors, it's only paint.

Tomorrow, I have to work on that stupid presentation. Been working on it all night and I just printed it out to see how it looks on paper. I guess I shouldn't get too upset. Most people haven't been doing presentation for 4 years like I have.... they've been doing REAL work...

Sleep Work Sleep Work Leave

So, I blew into Texas and I blew out.
I went from hotel to office to dinner to hotel. Get up. Repeat.
This morning I worked from the hotel because we finished everything yesterday.
I had about 6 hours work to do and thought I could make a huge dent on the 3 1/2 hour flight home. What happens? I FALL ASLEEP!!!! GAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is it about planes?
I always fall asleep!!

Now I'm going to have to spend the whole damn weekened working. The stress is up because we have a meeting with New EVP on Friday and the guy who is giving it is ON VACATION ALL WEEK and is only coming in for the meeting on Friday afternoon.

He sent me a draft but it's too long and it's written like he talks - full of long sentences that ramble. He kills you with fluff. It has good subtance behind what he's saying and I only know that because I've worked with him for a while. The best analogy that I can think of is, instead of hitting the nail with a hammer, once, hard... he hits it a million times with a foam pillow. And in the end, I'm not sure he gets the point across. He's exhausted, the nail is exhausted and the foam pillow? Well, if you think of the foam pillow as the message, it's totally battered. But, he's getting better. Just taking a while. Sigh...

So, I have to take his presentation, wordsmith it, boil it all down into a nutshell and then send it back to make sure he understands it and can communicate the message. And he wanted to spend ALL DAY SUNDAY working on it together!!! AT MY HOUSE! Uhh... No....I'm not working on Sunday because of your vacation!!!

I have a life, ya know.

Speaking of hotels...
This is such a good hotel in so many ways.
It's very upscale and sits on the Byron Nelson Golf Course.
It also has squash courts, tennis courts, a full fitness facility, spa, 3 outdoor pools and an indoor lap pool that even my Hunny Bunny would be proud of!

But then, this hotel can also be very cheesy.
I am paying $10 a day for internet.
And it's not even WiFi.

Ran 3 miles on the treadmill this morning.
Felt pretty good, too.

A day in Dallas no different than a regular day in Boston...

Except for the location of course.
Today was basically a day filled with one meeting.
One. Meeting.
It lasted from 8:30 until about 5:30.
And it was a full meeting, too, leading to a taxing day.
Amazing how much sitting in a chair can zap out of you.

And as persuasive as I can be, I couldn't get them to veer off course long enough to listen to the President's speech at 1pm EST.

After the meeting, the group went to dinner at Brio Tuscan Grill.
It was very large and kinda "chain-y" feeling but the food was terrific.
One of the guys from Texas who is senior manager and is hosting us out of towners did the wine ordering, one of which was a Barolo. So, of course, I matched my dinner choice to take advantage of the wine.

The food was excellent. I started off with the Beef Carpaccio, which I shared with a guy from Boston sitting next to me. The plate was huge so we passed it around, making it much more manageable. This was followed by a salad of lettuce wedge, pecans, Bleu Cheese, drizzled with a parmesean dressing. Excellent. I only ate half of it. Dinner was a veal marsala which was very different - didn't taste like a tradition marsala and was accompanied by roasted pepper, crispy sweet potatoe chunks and fresh green beans. For dessert, I split a pumpkin bread pudding with a woman from Salt Lake City. My portions weren't huge but were just over the edge of large - mostly I left food on the plate. The location is easy off the highway but it's in one of those shopping mega-plexes so if you are not local, you probably won't know about it. If you can find it, it's worth a trip. Besides, it's right across from the gigantic Barnes and Noble, if you need a place to wait or read off the calories afterwards.

I am back at the hotel.
So tired.

And I won't even go into the election.

I don't feel much better but I had to say it.

Anyway, tomorrow is another day filled with ONE MEETING.

What's in a glass?

I am at the Four Seasons and I ordered a glass of oj for breakfast for Room Service this morning.
They brought me a half carafe.
This is at least TWO glasses.
I can only drink a half glass and a full glass on rare occassions.

And you know… they will charge me $12 for this "glass" probably...

Shades of white

According to Benjamin Moore, there are about 100 shades of white. That is merely a guess since there is no real way to count the number since there are so many.

Next weekend, we will (hopefully) put on our first coat of paint in the first room to be painted on the third floor. We have chosen Corinthian White. It's a warm white in the cream to yellow range. It's less yellow then Montgomery White - which we have in our foyer at the Old House now. If we like how Corinthian White looks, then we may use it for the other three rooms on the third floor. If we don't like it, we will pick a different shade of white for the second room on the third floor. If we HATE it, then it's only paint and we can always paint over it. And the paint is only temporary until we get the wall paper up. I think that's like phase 27 or something like that.

I also scraped the ceiling in the second floor bathroom. It was raining plaster - gah! Thank goodness I had the semblance of mind to wear a hat and my glasses for protection. We aren't going to change this perfectly functional bathroom for now. At some point in the future we will redo it but it's definitely not a priority given the other things we have to do. The tile is white with black border trim. The floor is the tiny white octogon tiles with a black octogan tile of the same size dispersed throughout - not too much - just enough to accent. In terms of paint, anyone have any ideas for color other than a simple white? How about a warm offshite with a tinge of blue-gray? Anyone? ANYONE? This is probably going to be the second room I paint.

Next weekend, I hope to remember to bring my camera so I can post pictures of the work in progress.

On Sunday, we also met with the contractor. We have about 15 stained glass windows that need to be restored. And he just did a Victorian over in another town so he has some fresh ideas. Instead of soapstone in the kitchen, I am going to get a custom stainless steel sink that is a big square like the soapstone sinks that I saw - they are the old farmhouse style and the front of the sink sits flush with the cabinet underneath - as opposed to be set into the counter. He said it's not that much more than the double sinks you get off the shelf and this way, I get exactly what I want.

We have decided on a tin ceiling in the kitchen - which Scotty the Contractor says he has a catalog for. He thinks we can get something with swirls and circles and he can cut out the circles and put in tiny recessed lighting. That sounds so nice!! Joseph did some research and it's not that expensive to put in a tin ceiling. Thank goodness. As for the rest of the kitchen, who knows. Scotty said that I shouldn't worry about t until they've done the demo - then we can see what we can and can't do. We have a LOT of work to do in the first floor - Phase I.

I am so glad I like our contractor. He's laid back and I can tell him what I think - good or bad - and he just takes it all. He will also be the finish guy so now I know that I won't have to worry about someone ruining the final look. Thank goodness. And I can tell him what I am thinking about in general terms and he's not afraid to share with me the things he's done at other places, and offer up suggestions. If it's too expensive, he just laughs, looks at Joseph, and says, "it only takes money." Uh... okay... next idea, then. LOL.

It kills me that I will be away for the rest of the week. I would rather sit home and worry about the New House instead of being in Dallas traveling for work and worrying about the New House.

I could be PACKING!


We have a LOT OF BOOKS.
So far, 10 boxes and still counting.

After the books, it's the software, movies, and photos to pack.

We also have to start changing the address on newspapers, magazines, bills, yadda yadda yadda.

3 days of running - on schedule for the first time in a very long time

Joseph pointed out an article to me about a guy who trained for the Ironman and lost 140 pounds in the process since January. The Ironman's total mileage is 140.6. Given that, he decided to limit his Calorie intake to 1406 per day. His before and after pictures were amazing.

This brings up the one thing that I can't seem to get my arms around - the calorie intake. Why is it that smart people (yes, I am including myself in that category), know a lot but have so much trouble executing? Oh. Sorry. That's just me. I forgot for a second there.

I've also been reading about 3 8 ounce glasses of milk helping to lose weight - not mention that it's very healthy - and I know I probably don't get enough calcium.

I've been talking about it long enough... what will get me to execute on all the stuff that I already know?


The Cereal Diet is starting to sound better and better.
Maybe for a week.
Heck, maybe for a day... try it on for size... and if it feels good, keep it on for another day, and so on and so on...

Off to Dallas

I am heading to Dallas this afternoon, arriving about 6pm.
By the time I get my bag, the car, and drive to the hotel, it should be about 7pm - 9pm EST.
Karnac says... I will be one tired crank.

Yesterday, the travel office forwarded me a new itinerary. Actually, they sent me three of them - one for India in January and two for this trip - turns out that I am confirmed tonight at the Four Seasons instead of being waitlisted for tonight. The good news is that I won't be switching hotels tomorrow. The bad news is that I will be spending the rest of the week with a bunchaseniormanagers from work. When I say "the rest of the week", I mean 8 hours a day at work in a conference room, and then dinner that night most likely.

This is a last minute trip because they decided two weeks ago that we needed to go "off site" for a task force that I am on. We had been meeting by phone mostly but they decided we needed isolation for concentration. Whatever. Given that the choices were Ireland or Dallas, I'm glad it's Dallas. Anyway, the task force consists of 3 people in Boston, 2 people in Dallas, 2 people in Salt Lake City, and 2 people in Ireland. So, given that there are more people in Boston than any other site, and given that all these other people come to Boston regularly, why did we have to go to Dallas? Hmmm... think think think...

Ok. I give up.

Anyway, I am sitting in a middle seat both ways.
Gawd. I hope I don't have fat people on either side of me squishing me to death.
The good news is that Four Seasons has a full fitness facility to rival any facility out there.
The bad news is that they have a spa and I will be so busy, I won't be able to do any spa actvities.
The good news is that it's going to be hot - 80's think.
The bad news is that I've packed all my summer gear in boxes which are at the New House.

Anyway, I could go on.

At least I can VOTE before I leave...

Boxes everywhere

I am now the proud possessor of about 30 boxes.
They are all in my office.
It doesn't sound that good until you know that about 15 of them are the professional mover folding kind.
The rest of paper boxes in groups of threes all stuck together somehow.
Not those are everywhere, including covering the ceiling-to-floor wndows that I have.
And around here, that's a no-no.
I would how long it will be before some floor walker comes in to tell me to uncover those windows. You never know that they actually exist until some plain-clothes floor cop comes and tells you to do this or that. The security around here is amazing, not only in it's profuseness but in their abililty to blend.

Anyway, I am only in the office next week on Monday.
I think I need an intervention.
Perhaps I'll come in this weekend and take at least the paper boxes out of there.
The folding boxes are tricky. Depending on who is at the security desk, if you take out too much at a time, they make a fuss - company property, blah blah blah. I'm only borrowing them! If you really want me to I'll bring them back!

High adrenaline...

Still at it. Still at work...
Did not work out this morning since I had a long drive ahead of me to the NH office.
I had a day chock full of meeting start with in the car at 7:30 o'clock in the morning. That meeting has been rescheduled to tomorrow morning. The real day started at 9:3o and hasn't stopped yet.

I had a two hour meeting with the staff at this site. I wasn't sure how it went since I talked for TWO WHOLE HOURS. Well, there was a break for lunch - brought in sandwiches, chips, soda, brownies - blech - I had a few bites and then after the meeting, I went to the cafeteria to get lunch - Turkey Dinner - YUM!

Anyway, I had a skip level meeting with someone new who is three levels down. He said he was impressed with the group, had heard good things about me - don't they ALL say that?? - and hopes to be converted to a full time employee in the new year - he's a contractor right now. I really liked him.

So, here I am still at work. The adrenaline rush is still going on. I was supposed to go to a workshop on succession planning and management for women - I was supposed to go with someone who works for me and she couldn't go (long story) so I decided I had too much to do and decided to skip the meeting.

Such is life. Self-improvement goes by the wayside for the sake of others - the people, the organization, the projects... The story of my life.

Tomorrow, I was going to work from home but because I am on that transformation task force, I am going into the office to manage a firedrill of sorts. And the manager who I need to work with has canceled all of his meetings - it's good to know that when push comes to shove, he understands priorities. It's also good to know that he likes working for me enough to actually make it a priority!

Well... that's about it. Just a note to make me feel human again.

The perfect meal...

is a bowl of warm rice covered with Tofu Kimchee Bokum.
Stirfried pork - for flavoring - a large quantity of kimchee, a can of chicken stock, boil it all down until just enough liquid remains and the kimchee is tender, add firm tofu cut into mini triangles, and boil again.

I could eat a potful!

Work has started...

...on the new house...

Last night, I met Joseph at the new house after my massage appointment. He was covered in dust but not as bad as the dust from pulling up the rug this past weekend. He had been working away all afternoon, washing the walls and scraping and sanding and when I got there, he was spackling the walls. Still more work to do before we can paint this room. It's the first room in a long line of rooms to fix up. I've decided that all the rooms on the third floor will be the same color. I just haven't decided what color, yet. It's time for me to make a decision, I guess.

We had dinner around the corner at Dok Bua, a local Thai eatery. IIt was a good sign when our waiter could barely speak English and lots of Asians came in to eat. And dinner did not disappoint us. Wehad Basil Fried Rice with Tofu, and a chicken curry, and a crisp pork stirfry with what looked to be Chinese broccoli. All of it was delicious. At one point, trick or treaters came in and they had candy for them! I love Brookline!

At the end of our block is a gas station. Since our inspection sticker expired yesterday, we went back to the house, got the car, and got it inspected. I waited at the house with the Dingle Doggie. Anyway, Joseph said that the guy was REALLY nice, did the inspection for us at 8pm and we also met the guy who sold us our car. Evidently, the car dealership is really close by and they bring all their cars to gas up there. Small world.

We have started bring the Dingle Doggie to the house so she knows she is coming with us. She gets really nervous when we start packing. She was very happy when she saw her bed at the house.

I am slowly packing up. Right now, I am tackling each room with the goal of clearing out things that "sit on top or out and do nothing." That means I need to get a lot more boxes than I currently have. Every morning I walk the floor at work to scout for empty paper boxes and folding moving boxes. I scored big this morning - 4 paper boxes and 3 moving boxes. They are all in my office and now it's starting to feel like I'm home. Literally.

The bedroom is done for now. The next room is the front guest room. There's a lot of stuff in there since we use it as the office-workout-gearstorage-everythingthatcan'tfitanywhereelse room. Jonathan the Houseboy is coming to clean today. He will see the boxes but I know he won't be able to see the difference.

This morning I spent 30 minutes packing up the stuff on the two mantels in the house. It took a whole paper box. Jeez.

I wonder when Joseph will start packing his stuff?

It's Vuja De all over again...

Yesterday, I made tentative arrangements to go to India end of January through the beginning of February.

I am meeting one of my managers there - she is going to China and will be flying in and out of Shanghai.

Turns out it's going to during the Super Bowl. Go figure.

It seems like I was there only yesterday. I can't believe it was in MAY! It feels like LAST MONTH! Huh.

When I informed my manager, he said that a whole passle of them are going out during the same time - give or take a few days. Great. Just what I need. My entire division to travel together. At least it will be warmer in Bangalore than in Boston.

All about Ankles...

Speaking of ankles...

Yesterday, I went in for my bi-weekly massage and Katrina pressed on my right leg while I was lying face up. And it hurt!!! The ankle on the outside was really painful. She ended up poking around and it's chock full of lesions - from the stupid ankle sprains in January of 2005!


Now I have to go back and endure ankle pain once again - every other week!!!

It's amazing what happens to your body from minor trauma.
I can't imagine how much of our "crookity-ness" is due to just living...
