Week 25 Training Recap

Last week's plan:

Monday: Run 20 minutes - Ran 22 minutes. Picked a different route through the back side of the neighborhood.

Tuesday: Bike 30 minutes - Biked 38 minutes. Felt pretty good. Decided to take it a bit easy. Total miles 10.39.

Wednesday: Run 45 minutes - Ran for 45 minutes around the Cottage Farms area again. Humid. Not too hot. Felt good. Slow as all get out.

Thursday: Bike 30 minutes - Took the morning off. It was too hard to try to do that and get out of the house by 7:15 to make it to the NH office for a 9am meeting.

Friday: Rest - Biked 30 minutes to make up for the rest day I took yesterday.

Saturday: Bike 20 miles - Surprise surprise surprise. I managed to ride 20 miles!

Sunday: Run 10 miles - 10.3 miles and another .4 mile walk home because I didn't feel like running the rest of the way.
Last week was busy but I managed to get all my runs in. Next week will be entirely different; I am traveling to CA for work and we have things scheduled from 8:30 in the morning ending with dinner which will be way past my usual bedtime.

So next week's schedule looks like this:
Monday: Run 20 minutes

Tuesday: Bike 30 minutes

Wednesday: Run 45 minutes

Thursday: Bike 30 minutes

Friday: Rest

Saturday: Bike 20 miles

Sunday: Run 10 miles
I can tell you right now that I will not be biking!

15 years

Yesterday, at the start of a big group meeting, my boss made the announcement that I've been with the company for 15 years.


I could have sworn I'd only been here for 14.

Well, thinking back on this, I've been telling people 14 years for a couplayears now, so I supposed this should have been expected.

When I started working here, I took a look around, figured out that everyone was NUTZ and I swore I'd be gone in three.

And now... 15 years later, there is no relief in the horizon - not to mention they've all made it very difficult, if not nearly impossible, to leave this place.

It's all a conspiracy, I tell you, a damn conspiracy!


Crazier as it goes!

I was reviewing my workout schedule for the rest of the week, I knew it was going to be impossible to get all my workouts in and do all I have to do. It's almost into crisis mode.

Yesterday morning, I had 30 minutes on the bike. I have to drive an hour to the NH office. Then I get into the office - physically at the desk - and that takes me about 15 minutes. Then I have to get plugged in and logged on and settled. And then call into a meeting at 9am. Working backwards, the latest I could leave the house was around 7:15. It takes me an hour and 15 to get showered and ready, eat breakfast, etc. That would take me back to 6am. To get my ride in I'd have to start around 5:15 am. And to wake up and rise, and actually warm up to the day, takes me about 45 minutes. That meant I would have to wake up around 5am. But I woke up around 5:30 with my sleep cycle. So, I gave it up and took a rest day.

So, this morning, I had a blood test at 9:30. This isn't bad on a normal Friday because it's a fasting blood test and Friday's are my rest days - that means I don't have to eat breakfast until later. BUt this morning, I had to get in my 30 minute bike ride. Okay. Not bad. Then we had to meet with the Tile Man. At 8am. Something had to give. So no blood test. I rode, I ate, I got ready, we met with the Tile Man, and then Joseph drove me to work. I'll have to schedule the blood test for two weeks when I get back from my business trip.

This weekend I might be experiencing my first ever two-a-day workout. I have 20 miles scheduled tomorrow. BUt we are leaving at 8am to go to Joe's nephew's graduation party in NY. IT's take about 4 hours to get there. Hmmm... So I am going to try and do 10 miles in the morning before I leave. That means getting on the bike around 6am. Very doable. And depending on when we get back, I can do the rest of the 20 miles during the evening. Or on Sunday.

Sunday is a totally different story. I have a 10 mile run. And lots of errands to run and quite possibly the rest of the bike ride from Saturday. And I have to pack for my business trip on Monday morning.

All I gotta say is, TGIF. I think.

Is it Thursday??

I am doing it again. I woke up this morning thinking it's THURSDAY! ARG!!!

I am traveling again... Next week I head to California for work to meet with a database vendor. Ugh. This will screw up my eating and my workouts. I will try to get out for a 30 minute run every morning. And I will make some feeble attempt at counting calories and fats. ARG!!!! I hate traveling! SCREWS UP MY SCHEDULE!!!!

And if that isn't enough, I found out that this week's morning schedules are a mess for the rest of the week! I have to run and bike and run and bike. But I have appointments that start at 9, with commuting or driving long distances so if I don't get up at 4am and start my workout at 5am, there is just no way I am going to be able to do this!

House note. The cabinets in the kitchen are coming along pretty well. I was happy until Joseph pointed out the spice rack to me. Sigh... They put the door to the cabinet with the spice rack in facing the wrong side. I want the door to open away from the stove with the spice rack being pulled toward the stove. They installed it the other way. We had a similar issue at the last house we did. So we had a few words with Joseph telling me it's right, and me telling him it's wrong... in the end, I prevailed. I had a word with Scotty the Contractor this morning and it will be fixed.

And we have to meet with the bathroom tile guy at some point. Turns out that the tile lady we went to see didn't write down the tiles for the floor in the shower! ARG! Now, someone is going to have to go over there and remind her what we picked out! ARG!! One more thing to deal with. I hate dealing with stuff!

Anyway, I hope we can get some decent pictures of the construction work this weekend.

Amazing Sleep

It's truly amazing what a good night's sleep can do for you. How refreshed you can feel, how naturally you wake, and how easily you warm up to the rest of the day. For some strange reason, I felt really good this morning when my eyes popped open at 5am. Amazing what less stress can do for you. I can't imagine it's anything other than that - yesterday, I left work with the Big Boss's presentation pretty much all done. Okay... So I still put in an 11 hour day but I still felt good!

At the risk of being gross, and only Asians can relate to this since they are always talking about digestive issues and bowel movements, the Alli thing is really working. This morning (ahem), there was fat and GREASE in the toilet bowl. Hellooooo.... ewwww..... forget that I am talking about daily "regularity" so to speak... but if people could see what I saw, they'd be eating less fat! As it is, I pretty easily stuck to the eating plan - around 1600 calories and around 32 grams of fat (I am supposed to have around 54 grams or less per day).

I will note that there is no way I can count food exchanges. Counting Calories, fiber grams, and fat grams is enough work! Overall, I think this plan will work for me and I am pretty excited. This morning I lost another pound. Okay. Water. Whatever. I'll take it.

Workout Note.
Yesterday I ran for 22 minutes around the back side of the neighborhood. The thought of running UP Beacon Street one more time was enough to send me over the edge. The new route is flatter and is through residential neighborhoods, shaded and very little traffic. It was lovely.

This morning called for 20 minutes on the bike. I did 38 minutes on the bike. Felt good. I could have kept going if I didn't have to come to work early. I always start out saying, "I'll just take it easy and spin this morning." Right. After I hig 21 mph, I pretty much gave that up.

House Note. They have started putting in the cabinets in the kitchen. It's supposed to be done this week. And they have started tiling the steam shower. No idea when that will be done. They've only started putting the liner material up that you tile over. If there is enough progress, I hope to take some pictures this weekend.

Week 24 Training Recap

Not a bad week. I've decided that I will not be doing speedwork. The last couple weeks of runs have just about killed me due to the weight I am carrying. The body always catches up 2 or 3 weeks later - if you gain weight, it's doesn't realize until 2 or 3 weeks later when all of a sudden, you can't seem to walk around the block. And so, that is how it's is for me now. So I am concentrating on just running and trying to lose this blasted weight.

I went and bought a starter kit for Alli (pronounced "ally") which is approved by the FDA as the first over the counter fat-blocking pill. It is well thought out and after reading the material, it turns out that a 1600 calorie a day plan is exactly what is right for me. Now, I haven't been counting fats but with the Alli plan, you have limit your fat intake. If you don't, you get all sorts of unpleasant side effects - bad enough that you don't want to do it again - sort of makes you "fat-intolerant" (similar to lactose intolerant). My goal is to eat no more than 17 grams for each of three meals. The calories you ingest is 1600 calories. But if 100 of that is fat, the Alli pill only allows you to absorb 50 of the 100 calories, thereby helping you lose more weight. They said that if you do this as they recommend, you will lose 50% more weight in the same period of time had you not taken it. It's worth a short. I eat pretty well so this might work. And I don't have a lot to lose in comparison to some people you see walking around.

Tuesday: Bike 30 minutes - I am getting stronger. 9.03 miles in 31 minutes. 17.48 mph.

Wednesday: Run 30 minutes - Good 30 minute run outdoors.

Thursday: Bike 30 minutes - Biked 36 minutes. Had a good time so I kept going for a bit more.

Friday: OFF - Yeah!

Saturday: Bike 15 miles - Good 15-mile ride.

Sunday: Run 8 miles - 6.87 miles in HOT HILLY Ashland while Joseph was out doing the bike and run leg of his triathlon.

This coming week looks like this:
Monday: Run 20 minutes
Tuesday: Bike 30 minutes
Wednesday: Run 45 minutes

Can I please REST on the weekend???

There is no rest for the living sometimes. What a weekend!!!

Saturday morning, I biked 15 miles. Wonderful. Had a great time.

Then we went to pick out the granite for the bathroom and kitchen. OMG! The place we went to is in Braintree and they have a huge warehouse floor with slabs and slabs of granite. We finally chose a white one with grayish bluee swoops for the shower seat and the vanity in the master bath. For the kitchen, we went with a black background with a vdery prominent grain (swoops) in light colors - more like a grayish taupe - and with very faint maroon blotches for the kitchen. It's hard to describe. It's going to look great. The contractor is trying to get the kitchen all set up for us. Once we move the kitchen from the second floor to The Kitchen, he can work on the upstairs ceilings. It's like a dominoe effect. The cabinets are going to go in on Monday. Which reminds me... we need to pick out the tin ceiling.

Then we got home, vegged out a bit. I went to the market and bought a bunchafrozen foods since we now have the wonderful giant freezer - I didn't realize how big it was going to be. The delivery from Hills Home Market barely filled it.

After that, we went to a Chinese wedding reception for the daughter of someone who works for me. I hadn't seen her since she was four years old. Now she's all grown up. I can't wait for the other daughter to get married. I love Chinese banquets - with all it's 12 courses.

We got home and fell into bed. This morning, we went to Ashland for a Tri that my Hunny Bunny had entered. I saw him come in from the swim and take off on his bike, and then got dressed and took off for my long run. First, the area is very hilly. Second, it was REALLY REALLY HOT HOT HOT!!! Third, I cut the run short because I wanted to see Joseph finish.

After that, we went home, had a bite to eat, and then I fell into bed for a 3 hour nap! OMG! I was so tired!!! I didn't have enough sleep the night before and my sleep cycle was interrupted in the wrong place when Joseph work me at 5:30 to get ready to go to the tri. ARG!!! 5:30am. On SUNDAY??? Sigh... Anyway, I am still exhauted.

And I know I walked a lot but since I lost my pedometer, I have no idea how far I walked. Dang.

Tomorrow is another work day. I have to go to work so that I can make money to pay the contractor for working on the money pit and to buy that granite we picked out!

Hills Home Market made their delivery this morning. We have more water and meat to last us through the year, I think. Of course this means more work for me... I will need to track what we ordered and when we run out. Then I will need to track what we buy at COSTCo, the cost per unit, and when we run out - to make sure that we get the best price. Meats and water will definitely come from Hills, I am thinking. However, there are some things that are the same regardless of who we get it from buit are cheaper depending on the supplier. Sigh... more project for me!

House Note. Nothing. NOTHING! ARG!!! Tomorrow, we are going to pick out the granite.

Workout Note. Today was a rest day.

Walking Note. I have no idea. I lost my pedometer! WAH!!!

Okay. I have discovered that if you are very busy at work and totally stressed out, it is easy to not eat even when you are starving. It's similar to self flagellation where you punish yourself to not having finished whatever you need to which is why you are under stress. Yesterday, I had only 1235 calories by the time I had gotten home at 9:30pm. OMG! So I consume some more food to bring me up to around 1400 for the day. Still not enough. And, today is no different.

On another note, I have discovered South Beach Diet Breakfast Burritos. YUM! One is 230 calories and I had one as a mid-morning snack. I am not much for yogurt, or energy bars and smoothies. Too sweet! But give me a nice hot wrap filled with scrambled eggs, a little cheese and some flecks of red and green peppers and I am all over it! I will be stocking up this weekend!

And yet another discovery. I finally gave into my chacarrero craving that started early yesterday. I took the opportunity to take my shoes to the cobbler and stop in at my favorite outdoor food stand (really, they are inside a building, we are just on the outside). I have discovered that a single 600+ calorie sandwich can fill you up for a good 6 hours, especially if you have them cut it in half and you eat them as small separate meals. So far, I've had a little over 1100 calories as a result. Yikes. We did talk about food that fills you up, didn't we?

House Note. Nothing. Scotty the contractor came back but he didn't come into the house. How do I know this? The Dingle Doggie started huffing and wuffing and all manner of things which made me look out the window to see him parked outside across the street, playing with a rope and his ladder which was strapped to the top of his truck. Then he was gone.

Workout Note. I biked for 36 minutes today. The training plan was for 30 but I still remember my friend Chris telling me what I already knew. I must exercise for at least 45-60 minutes a day 6 days a week. I am working on that.

So, first things first. I worked til 9 PEE EMM last night. Took a cab home. Oh brother. Working late is killing the petty cash fund. I can park in the lot a 1/4 mile from the office for $10 or take a cab for $20. Let's see.... What to do what to do what to do... I think I'll drive! So that's what I did. I drove. I plan on another late night tonight and tomorrow because of that presentation next week to the Big Boss.

It's amazing what a day makes. I had to do a Powermap for all our customers. Problem is that I have about 30 sets of customers. It doubles the size of the presentation and it can be time sink when it comes to discussing them. So I sent about 3 to the Boss and asked him to review. He sends an email this morning that he thought it looked good. ARG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT what I in mind. Anyway...

I did manage to do the rough first draft last night and it turns out that I am in better shape than I thought I was. Thank goodness. I will be able to finish up the first draft tonight, send it onto the Boss without the Powermaps, and finish them up while is he reviewing the rest of the content. Phew!

Last night I got home to have my Hunny Bunny tell me that they are delivering the stove at 7am this morning. Yikes! But Scotty the Contractor will be here to oversee it. They arrived at 7:15 but who's counting? And delivered all the appliances - stove, fridge and dishwasher. They are beautiful. Stainless steel. 48 in. stove - 6 burners with a grill and a double oven. I checked to make sure they brought the red knobs. And the fridge is very large. For all my spices. Thanks goodness. The dishwasher remained in the carton so Joseph is going to have to check it out when he gets home. Rumor has it that the cabinets are going in Friday. Now, I was told Friday before only to have it changed to Monday, and now it's back to Friday. I am not holding my breath.

I managed to get out for my 30 minute run (15 minutes out and 15 minutes back which I ran faster during the second half so I had to go around the block once) before Scotty got to the house. It was a very nice day. Cool in the upper 50's, and slightly sprinkling. It was very good day for a run. But I was really really slow. I am a minute slower than I was a month or two ago. Yikes. It's the weight slowing me down.

I did manage to walk 3.30 miles yesterday. I had the cab drop me off a half mile from the house. Since I drove today, I have to walk around the building a lot to get my miles in. And tonight, I managed on 2.95 miles. It's hard to get in walking miles if you drive to work. I don't know how people in the suburbs do it!

AND, I was able to stay under 1600 calories yesterday. It was one of those days where I kept forgetting to eat so it was easy.

Is it Tuesday?

What a wonderful day so far. First, I thought it was WEDNESDAY when I got into work this morning. Finding out that I am a day ahead usually puts in a sour mood; however, this time it means I have one more day to do a presentation to the Big Boss (my boss's boss) which is due NEXT Wednesday. Given that I should have been working on it the past month but only started it at 11:30 AM this morning due to (as I told someone who wanted me to get them a list of something):

  1. a myriad of 20 to 30 minutes discussions that pop up constantly and fill my ENTIRE day
  2. initiatives that I am volunteered for that isn't scoped properly so takes up triple the time than originally agreed to
  3. emergencies and decisions that require my attention
  4. the day to day business of running the organization
  5. Merit cycle
    budget cycle planning
  6. paperwork documentation for contingency etc that takes too long for the time they gave me to do it (and he is one of them!)

I told him that someone needs to tell The Big Boss to move the meeting back to July or I need to do this work.

Yes. These are the types of emails I write to people at work. I wonder what would happen if I got hit by a truck or just didn't show up to work ever again? NOTHING! That's what. People don't get it.

Anyway, I had terrific bike ride this morning. I am getting stronger and faster on the bike. I rode for 31 minutes and hit 9.03 miles. I even rode in the big ring I've been riding the medium ring (I have a triple) and I was starting to hit the highest gear. So I tried shifting into the big ring the other day and couldn't. I got on the bike this morning and lo, and behold!, the bike was already on the big ring for me! My wonderful Hunny Bunny had loosened something up to allow the chain to shift. Happy happy happy!! I go about grousing about things and he comes along after me, quietly fixing and righting whatever it is I am grousing about! So, this morning, I warmed up on the second gear on the big ring, then rode from the second to the third to the fourth... My goal is to be able to switch the whole thing over to a double cassette. But if I do that, I might as well get a new bike....

Oh, and because I don't seem to have enough to do or think about or worry about, I am thinking of putting together a 60x60 list. 60 things I want to do before I turn 60. But That gives me 13 years to get them done. But then again, I am also thinking that 60 things are a lot.

Rumor has it that...

I'd post pictures of the kitchen floors but Scotty the Contractor already covered it up with paper because the Dave the Electrician came yesterday to install some lights. We had no lights. Maybe a BULB. Really. Now we have a smattering of lights here and there.

We still have no dimmers.

Things are looking better

So, this morning had a nice 20 minute recovery run. I went back to the Q-Factor Spenco inserts since the Green Smartfeet are bothering my right foot. I think the arch on the right foot is lower or the foot hits the ground differently because my left food is fine. I might try the gray inserts. These are the lighest ones around. I don't want anything that restricts my foot flexibility; I just want something that "catches" the middle of the arch during it's "fall" cycle so that it doesn't get overstrained. The gray smartfeets are really light and I am going to have to pay attention to it. I'll give them a shot on Wednesday morning since tomorrow morning is a bike day.

In keeping with trying to get more walking miles in, I walked up one stop to Summit Ave. It only added about .20 of a mile but since it's an earlier stop, I got a seat without issue. I think I like walking up a stop! Then from Park Street, I walked a half mile to the office, instead of taking the Red Line, getting off at South Station, and then walking 100 feet into my building. A little under 2 miles and the day barely started.

An interesting comment from my friend Chris in TX:
I will offer a suggestion for you. First check out Robert Haas - "eat to win".

Haas has a good perspective on athletes diets. And I think it was Haas that left me with this nugget: In order to burn fat, one has to exercise longer than 25 minutes. In other words in the first 25 minutes of exercise you are burning glycogen that has been stored in the muscles. After 25 minutes the fat burning kicks in. So every minute after 25 is your most valuable exercise minute for burning fat.

In my case, I decided that I would do at least an hour of exercise a day starting January. And I also limited my calories and particularly my fat calories. By March I had dropped about 15 pounds.

Okay. So this is something I already knew. And by the 25 minute rule cited above, my 20-minute recovery run this morning did nothing. Nada. My runs and bikes the rest of the week are for 30 minutes. So that is 5 minutes toward weight control. Dang. I need to ramp up the lengths of time.

On another note, I walked 5.35 miles today and I stayed under 1600 calories! YAHOO!

Things are looking up! Tomorrow I have 30 minutes on the bike.

Week 23 Training Recap

I am still at my highest weight ever. Ugh.

This is the first week of training since I stopped running at VCM. Last week was pretty much a wash. This week went pretty well.
Last week's totals:

Run miles: 12.82 miles
Walk miles: 18.89 (This is only for 4 days. I am going to start walking to the further t-stop in the mornings and walk from Park Street Station instead of riding to the station right next to my building)
Bike miles: 39.74
The running portion:
Monday: Run 20 minutes - Ran for 20 minutes. Wasn't too hot but it was starting to get muggy by the time we finished.

Tuesday: Bike 30 minutes - Biked for 30 minutes. 8 miles. Max speed was around 20 mph.

Wednesday: Run 30 minutes - ran 30 minutes. It's getting nice out so no treadmill for me.

Thursday: Bike 30 minutes - biked for 30 minutes. Felt good. Legs are getting stronger.

Friday: OFF - felt good to have a rest day

Saturday: Bike 15 miles - biked 15.06 miles. Legs felt good. I can't shift into the big gear. Something's wrong with the shifter. Dang.

Sunday: Run 8 miles - Ran 8.6 miles on what turned out to be hot clear sky day. The weather liars didn't fail me again. And lugging an additional 6 pounds made it a very un-fun day.
This coming week looks the same as this past week:

Monday: Run 20 minutes
Tuesday: Bike 30 minutes
Wednesday: Run 30 minutes
Thursday: Bike 30 minutes
Friday: Rest
Saturday: Bike 15 miles
Sunday: Run 8 miles
The diet is not going to so well. As I mentioned earlier 1600 calories isn't a lot and it's hard to keep below it. I don't know how people eat only 1200 or 1400 calories a day. I know a lot of them must cheat somehow.

I went to the store Saturday and got frozen bagged meals. You cook them and there are 3 servings in each bag to the tune of between 250 and 300 calories a serving. This is much better and less expensive than the frozen dinners from Lean Cuisine. So I got 3 bags and I'll given then a try this week. I've decided that I don't do well having to think up meals. First, I don't have time to think about what I will cook. And second, I certainly don't have to time to track each ingredient, figure out the total calories, divide by the number of servings, etc. I mean, WHO has the time for that??? So the bagged meals might be the way to go. Just throw in a cup of rice and some kimchee and I should be all set. Two days ago, I was at the highest weight I've EVER BEEN IN MY LIFE and something has to give. I am getting desperate.

I've also started wearing my pedometer again and trying to get in at least 5 miles of walking a day. Since moving to Brookline, I know I am walking less. Although, not as little as I would be if I lived in the far flung suburbs - which anything further out of Boston than Brookline.

Sunday Heft

For those who wonder why my run was like today, do the following.
  1. Get a waist pack
  2. Stuff a 5 pound dumbell and a 2 pound dumbell into it.
  3. Wrap it around your waist - hmmm, doesn't it feel good?? Not.
  4. Now, run up and down the hills of Brookline for 8 miles.

I did not run today. No. Instead, I hefted an additional 7 pounds up and down the hills of Brookline!

I am at an all time high weight.
As in... highest ever in my life.

I have to calm down about this.
The more panicked I get, the more I will gain from trying all sorts of stupid things.
"Eat when I am hungry, stop when I am not."
This has always worked so I will go back to the basics.

On another note, for the first time EVER, I ran around the reservoir (don't know the name of it). It is at Cleveland Circle which is about 2 miles up the road. And the reservoir is about 1.2 to 1.25 miles around and you get both headwind and tail wind. Today, I saw a pair of beautiful white swans, one of which had it's butt end in the air. So cute. And a gaggle of Canada Geese. A few of them with their butt-ends in the air. So cute. And two sets of babies, about 8 in each set, huddling close to their mothers. SO CUTE! Even if they didn't have their butt ends in the air!

Hard wood

Got home tonight to find piles and piles of hardwood flooring in the future family room and entry way.
Red Oak and Mahagony.



I might be leading a revolution at work.

How do I even describe the situation.
Project was implemented and use of tool was mandated.
It was so bad, people just went through the motions and did the minimum.
The data is bad, the process is bad, and people roll their eyes.

In comes New Head Guy.
He likes the idea of it and realizes how bad it is.
Starts a new project to reengineer it.

In comes Bonehead Project Manager who is more form than function.
She can't manage big projects.
She doesn't understand what we do.

She thinks everything fits into neat little rows that she can put a check mark next to.

You can't get consensus by saying, "if you do not respond, I will take it to mean you agree."
That is not buy in.

The process is broken.
The manager is an idiot.

The whole damn thing is just wrong.

And I am digging in my heels.
And all of my peers and their directs involved in this nonsense is banding behind me.

After all these years of trying, I might have found a way to get fired...


On the other hand...

My arm is KILLING ME from golf!!!


Good News and Bad News

The good news:
This morning, I got on the bike trainer for 30 minutes. I ended up doing 8.32 miles with a max speed 25mph for a second. I was fooling around with that one. Anyway, max speed before that was about 20.7mph. Kept the rpm's in the 90's. I hit 100+ a couple of times. Doing good. I can tell I am using different muscles than for running. This is a good start to developing less used muscles. This weekend I have to get out on the rode for 15.

The bad news:

I hate cars and traffic. Sigh...

The good news:
Yesterday afternoon, we had a work outing to Kimball Farms. Basically, it has bumper boats, mini golf, a driving range... It was funny to see all these people who had never hit a golf ball in their lives whaling away! Some were good. We have a guy who is a scratch golfer. He joined us after taking the day off to qualify for some amateur golf championship in July. He hit a few balls and advised the worst of the bunch. It was so funny! Anyway, I also hit a bucket of balls. The balls went up, straight and about 125-150 yards for the most part. I did hit a couple of grounders and I shanked one really badly! I am thinking I should get out there on the weekends for an hour and hit some balls and practice some putting and at the end of the summer, try my hand a round. We'll see what happens. Weekends around here are pretty full already.

The bad news:
This morning, my right arm is KILLING me. That's what I get for overdoing it again. It's been about two years since I last hit a golf ball! Oh, and I gained another pound! WAH!!!

And the final news:
This morning, I am riding along on the Green Line trolley, happily doing sudoku when suddenly the trolley lurches to a hard stop. I got flying into the people next to me, and the person to my left goes flying into me! JEEPERS CROW!!! WHAT THE....??? Turns out that the train hit a car! We didn't know this of course because we just sort of sat there for 5 minutes. We did notice a car that had just crossed the tracks to our left sitting there. It's back driver's side panel was crushed. It just sat there and I wondered about it since other cars were streaming by it to it's right. But there was nothing to indicate that the car was an issue; there are lots of cars in Boston with dents and the driver remained sitting in the car as if nothing happened. And there were people doing roadwork and they didn't look up.

Finally, a T person went over to the car, the driver rolled it's window down, and the talking commenced. The person finally got out of the car and saw the panel and sort of "gasped." I made out that she didn't know about the dent and was surprised from her reaction. It was all suspect to me. I mean, how could she NOT feel the blow of the train that could be that kindadent into her car?? Which told me that the dent was probably already there and she was thinking she could get money from the T. OR she was sitting there waiting for the train to pass, hoping that no one would do anything but was caught. Maybe she doesn't have insurance.

Anyway, then someone else came on the train and asked if anyone had been hurt. We were all okay so she said it was going to be a long wait, at which point we all streamed off the train and started walking to work - all toward Kemore and environs.

The good news is that I was able to catch a cab at Kenmore. I could have walked but the walk from the train to Kenmore took 15 minutes at which point it was 9am. And I had a 9am meeting! So I made it to work at 9:15 right before the meeting ended. Of course I wasn't in a good mood.

Tonight I plan to leave work early. I put out some nice Pork Loin chops for dinner. We will cook out before the raw weather sets in tomorrow. And recover from this day with a nice big glass of wine!

Of course that MAY offset the 11-5pm meeting/conference call that I am dialed into right now... grrrrrrr.....

I thought it would be easy to stick to a 1600 calorie per day diet.

What was I thinking???

Exercise Note: 30 minute run this morning. For the second day in a row, I got up around 5am and managed it to start my workout around 6am. I actually got out of the house at 7:45 this morning. Amazing what you can get done if you get out of bed an hour earlier.

House Note: The plasterers have come and gone and done all that they can for now. This is a delicate balancing act of coordinating activites according to their availability and to the order of things because we are living here. Rumor has it that the floor guy is putting in the kitchen floor this Saturday. It's time to look at paint chips for the kitchen.

Daily Recap

It feels good to be home.
I love visiting with Milt and Cher. It's one of the rare times when I am truly relaxed. One year, we went to visit for about 9 days and someone asked her how she could stand it for that long with house guests. This year, I was also asked the same thing when I mentioned to someone that they were coming to Boston for a few days, and then we were following them back to Ohio with a one day delay.

First, we (and they) are not house guests. We're kinda not really family either - sometimes it's better than family. We are low maintenance. We don't need looking after or entertaining. We take care of ourselves and do what we want. We don't mind if others take care of themselves and do what they want. When I go to Ohio, I cook. I love to cook for a hoard of people and Cher/Milt provide me with all manner of hoards of friends and family to cook for. This year was better than ever since I have no kitchen right now and have been cooking on a Coleman 2-burner propane-powered camp stove. In a living room that will be a bedroom. And we don't get pissy with one another - we shout and yell sometimes but never pissy. There's a difference.

And most of all, we are ourselves.

Yesterday afternoon, after an hour delay, we arrived home to plasterers leaving the house. What a mess. There were things all over the porch, paper on the floors covered with splatter, lots of plaster all over the place, including the floors! What a mess. Amidst the mess, I did notice the walls. Some were white and some were gray. It seems we are getting there. This morning, when I left for work, they were starting up again.

Poor Jonathan the Houseboy. Thank goodness he came yesterday. He cleaned while we went to dinner!

Yesterday, I ran for 20 minutes before leaving for the airport. Thank goodness I wasn't too lazy. This morning, I got on the bike for 30 minutes. Went for 8 miles. Felt pretty good.

I am also tracking my caloric intake. The goal for this week is a half pound loss at 1600 calories a day. I was chagrined and disheartened to see that at 2:30pm, I had already consumed a tad over 1300 calories. Dinner was less than stellar event. And of course, I still went over the the limit by about 150 calories. Tomorrow is an outing for work and they have bbq. It will be an interesting day.

Week 22 Training Recap

Not a lot of training going on last week.

After VCM, my legs hurt so bad, I couldn't even get up and down stairs very well.
So running was laughable when walking was hard enough.
Joseph is still trying to figure out what happened.

Anyway, the week looked like this:

Rest and travel from Vermont back to Boston

Rest again. I had a ton of work to do.

Rest again. We traveled in the afternoon to Ohio to visit our good friends Milt and Cher and watch the Memorial Tournament. Oh, and in case you didn't catch it, they were up for VCM and left our place on Monday.

Ran for 10 minutes on the bike paths around Muirfield. Did not get far. Did not expect to.
Walked around a little on the gold course.

Lots of walking on the golf course.

Not a lot of walking since it rained.

Walked around a LOT on the golf course. 18 holes. We followed KJ Choi and talked to his wife in both English and Korean. He has a cute little boy that was also walking the course when him. At the end, I bought a nice visor and he signed it. His son handed it back to me. Not only that, KJ won the tournament. Happy happy happy!
This coming week, I have a training plan from Joseph.
And I also have a plan of attack for losing weight.

First. Figure out what calories I need. Calories in must be less than calories out. It's a simple formula and anyone who argues is wrong wrong wrong. And yes, some people have LOWWWW BMI's. You have to EAT LESS. And yes, I know it sucks but it is what it is and you it will never change. Period. I don't wanna hear it.

Second. Do all my workouts.
Monday: Run 20 minutes
Tuesday: Bike 30 minutes
Wednesday: Run 30 minutes
Thursday: Bike 30 minutes
Friday: OFF
Saturday: Bike 15 miles
Sunday: Run 8 miles
