Happy Birthday to my Hunny Bunny!!!

Today is my Hunny Bunny's birthday. And I am exceedingly grateful that he is in this world. Had that not happened, I would not know True Love (with a Capital T and Capital L), have found my soul mate and experienced the most indescribable sensations of finished each other's sentences, looking at each other and knowing we are thinking the same thing at that exact moment, blurting out the same statement or phrase at exactly the same time, and totally and utterly completing each other.

Well, at least that is how I feel. I have entertained the notion that he might not feel the same way so I suppose that is how he feels too...

And this year, I have no gift. Of course, I stated that, and no one believed me. I have bits and pieces of a grand design and a grand plan but since meeting Joseph, I am disinclined to plan way in advance (this is his fault so he is partially to blame for my lack of a concise and succinct gift he can open up). And I should also mention that I have been so busy at work that I haven't had the time to research, search, obtain, attain and put all the pieces together. Much less wrap it in a nice box, with pretty paper, ribbon and bow.

So, this year, I have decided to celebrate The Four Days of Joseph's Birthday over Four Weeks. This is similar to The Twelve Days of Christmas. And the 8 days of Hannukah.

Next week I am in Dallas for business. Sigh... I wonder if I can bring a ray of sunshine back for him? Think that's possible? Hmmm... Didn't think so. Okay. I guess I need to be a bit more creative...

Today I was going to take the day off for all of this (yes, I am aware that it's a little late since TODAY is his birthday. Hmph) but I had to come in for a morning meeting with the big honcho. And his parents are coming into town this afternoon. And then there is the signing of the closing docs. And the picking up of the cable wire. And the getting of the rent check. And whole host of other non-birthday like activities and tasks.

At least we will be doing all of that together.
Does that count? Hmmm... it's a stretch but it might do...

House Almost-Warming

We're having a party next weekend. It's called the "It's Not Quite Done But We're Getting There Party." Without thinking about it, we (ok. I...) invited about 74 people. They are now responding. I forgot to consider that each would be inclined to bring a spouse or a spouse plus kid(s).

We are up to 55 people coming. And 35 more to go on the respondent list. 2 are maybes and 14 are declines.

I am on the edge of my seat. My fingers are chewed off to the first knuckle.

Joseph says we will cook out if the weather is good. Hmmm...
I wonder if the forecasted snow storm will arrive on Saturday?
I wonder what I can make for 55+ people if it does...???

Oh. I know! We'll cook out anyway! Joseph can use an umbrella.
And you would YOU like your burger cooked?

Swimming like a fish

Ok. Not quite. But I am getting better.

Tonight was swim clinic. We got into the big pool and did laps. Of course, this is the pool that I usually swim in when I am not in swim clinic. Anyway...

Tonight I discovered the secret of the pull buoy. The only way for me to go straight is to twist my torso as I stroke. As soon as I got into the rhythm, I did much much better. Now I can't wait to practice this. Maybe Thursday night. I was also told tonight that I have really good twisting at my torso.

I also discovered that if I drop my head down and relax my neck and shoulders, swimming is easier. I am not fighting myself in the water. Another new discovery that I can practice. I am also relaxed enough to breathe every four strokes. Happy happy!

This week, I can only get into the pool twice. Tomorrow night, we are going to a play that Joseph's niece and nephew is in. Thursday night I will get into the pool. Friday, we have the 'Rents and houseguests. Saturday, I have a massage, then a workshop, then the "Rents and I think it's rude to spend 8-10 hours doing my own thing when my in-laws are visiting, ya know? I also have to bike 35 miles. Sunday, I have a 16 mile run. I might get into the pool on Sunday. I don't know yet.

This week is basically going to suck, now that I am reviewing it. Dang.

Oh. This morning, I also biked 12 miles.

Week 47 Training Recap

Jeez. I gotta get more sleep!!!! I am so daggum tired today! I don't get it.

I also think that I am getting more toned. But I am not losing weight. So, now I need to do something about my caloric intake. In order to lose weight, I need to aim for the amount of calories it would take to maintain my goal weight plus a factor for an active lifestyle. Diana the Wellness Coach and Joseph finally convinced me that just because I sit around at a desk for work all day, it doesn't make it sedentary.

Anyway, I did some research (instead of tackling one of the many projects on my To Do List), and figured out that I need to eat anywhere between 1450 to 1900 calories a day to get down to my goal weight. Of course, the more I exercise on a given day, the more I can eat. This is to lose .5 to 1 pound a week. I am going to have to sit down and do some figuring on a menu. Sigh...

All in all, this was a good week of training. Joseph told me last night that since I am not training for a marathon anytime soon, he will have to redo my training schedule. Huh?? But I LIKE my training schedule. I like it JUST LIKE IT IS!!! WAH!!!

Anyway, this is how last week went:
Monday: Run 30 minutes and plyometrics. I basically walked this one. Thank goodness it was a recovery run. My hip is not happy. Joseph is massaging my legs for me and it's helping.

Tuesday: Bike 45 minutes in the morning, Stroke Clinic in the evening. Biking was good. I decided to go easy. Then I worked from home. Work has been HELL. And I MEAN HELL! I almost didn't make it to stroke clinic. It's at 7pm. And I got in some last minute work requests at 5:03 pm. Yes. FIVE OH THREE PM!!! "Don't kill yourself, but I need it first thing in the morning." GAH!!!!!!!! Anyway, I was so stressed out that I had to go to stroke clinic. Thank goodness I made it!

Wednesday: Run 60 minutes. I am going to try to swim too but with the holiday prep, not sure if I can carry this off.I was so tired but I did manage to get on the treadmill for an hour. John and Elizabeth came for Thanksgiving so I couldn't get in my evening workout. Well... I probably needed a break anyway.

Thursday: Bike 60 minutes. Thanksgiving so I can't swim. Dang.Ugh! I spent 6 hours standing in the kitchen COOKING! And I was sweating. LIKE A MANIAC! Who needs a workout when you can just cook!!

Friday: Run 45 minutes - this is 15 minutes longer. Swim in the afternoonWell, I tried to make up a couple of workouts. I biked for an hour and then right after, I got on the treadmill for 45 minutes. It took 2-3 minutes to get that sluggish feeling out of my legs from the bike but at the end, I was back up to my regular pace and feeling pretty good. Not sure what everyone is talking about when they say that you can't run after you bike because it's too hard. I'd say that it feels weird and it's a little hard for the first few minutes but then it's okay.

Saturday: Bike 30 miles. Swim 35-40 laps. Swam 35 laps. Came home and watched some shows and then hit the bike for 32 miles. Felt good. I am back to normal after the Thanksgiving hump. Yahoo!.

Sunday: Run 16 miles. Not sure how this will go since I bonked last week. Joseph says to just keep going. And so I will.16.09 miles in the bag. Yahoo. A very very tired Yahoo.

Total Running Miles: 26.85 - finally a decent week! This is the record so far.
Total Biking Miles: 59.4 - This is the record so far!
Total Swimming Yards: 2450 yards (45 laps) (Record: 2750 yards)
Total Stretching Days: 2 times, with 3 massages
Total Workout Hours: 10:20:19 (this is a record. 10 hours and 20 minutes. I am rather impressing myself! No wonder I need more sleep!
Next week will be interesting. It's pretty much the same as this past week. Unless Joseph decides to finally to change my schedule. Pffffft!

Monday: Run 30 minutes.
Tuesday: Bike 45 minutes in the morning, Stroke Clinic in the evening.
Wednesday: Run 60 minutes. Try to swim in the evening.
Thursday: Bike 60 minutes. Try to swim in the evening.
Friday: Run 45 minutes. Not sure if I can swim since the In Laws are coming in.
Saturday: Massage in the morning. Bike 30 miles. Not sure I can swim since the 'rents will be here.
Sunday: Run 16 miles. Not sure if I can swim since I don't know when the 'rents are leaving.

The key to a working iPod on a cold day... to keep it warm.

Sunday is Long Run Day. The last time it was this cold, the iPod died just under 2 hours. What a pain! The cold weather just kills the battery.

Today, I remembered (finally) what I did last winter. I kept it close to my body for warmth. So today, I clipped it on the waistband of my tights toward the inside. I tucked my shirt in between the iPod and my skin so that I wouldn't get any chafing. Over that, I wore my usual cold weather wind resistant jacket. And wah-lah! It worked. 3 hours later, it still had battery life left!

16 miles today. Yes. A little over 3 hours. It was long and slow. This is the longest run since last May. It was cold and there was headwind for the first 8 miles. EIGHT MILES. And then I hit the Newton Hills. There was no relief for the weary. My hip behaved though and was nowhere near as painful as last weekend when I had to ditch the 14-miler.

Thank goodness all I had to do today was run because I am not sure that I could have done anything else!

Another good day of training...

In a nutshell, I swam 35 laps. Got home and rested for a bit and then did 32 miles on the bike. It was good. It's always good no matter how bad it is when I first start out. Today, it wasn't even bad when I started out.

I think I am getting used to this whole get-seriously-working-out thing.

Happy happy happy!

Justa Cuppla Thangs...

First of all, Thanksgiving turned out pretty well. John the Nephew came in from NYC. Elizabeth the Niece came in from about 2 miles down the road from NEC. And it was quiet. Yes. Quiet. The only down part is that I didn't get to go and run or bike or anything like that. Instead, I spent about 6 hours on my feet in the kitchen cooking and sweating like a PIG! GAH! Yes. LIKE. A. PIG! But dinner was quite delicious. Happy happy.

Today, I finally made the time to work out. To make up for Thursday, I rode the scheduled hour for 15.8 miles. Nice and easy. I am a bit miffed that my "nice and easy" isn't getting any faster. Then, I did the scheduled 45 minutes for today.

This is the first time I ran right after biking. And by "right after," I mean that I jumped off the bike, took off my bike shoes, put on my running shoes, and then hopped on the treadmill. My legs were sluggish and I really noticed it in my right upper hamstrings and upper thigh area. But after about 3-4 minutes, I was able to work it out and it was all things back to normal. Thank goodness. So, not sure what people are talking about when they say that it's REALLY hard to run after you bike. It's a little uncomfortable, but I wouldn't say that it was HARD or anything like that.

On another broken-record note - I gotta lose weight. Dang.

You know your house is too big when...

You are SMS Texting your husband to talk to him.
"Why?" You ask?

Because he is on the first floor and you are on the third floor.

You know your house to is too big when...

You are talking to your husband on the first floor and you are walking around and you can't see him. Why?

Because he is also walking around trying to find you and you are both just missing each other!

Plyometrics are not working and pigs can't fly

Actually. It's not that they are not working, it's that I am not working them into my schedule. Adding swimming and plyometrics have proven to be too difficult. So, I am sticking to swimming and forgetting about plyonmetrics. I think I need to lift weights before I do plyometrics, anyway.

Yesterday, I pigged out. I was so stressed out from work. I cannot remember the last time that I was that stressed out. I got in 3 requests from my boss at 5:03. When I should have been wrapping up for the day, it looked like my day was just about to start. The budgeting we've been doing since JUNE has not ended, we are being squeezed at both ends - the customers want us to do more and management doesn't want us to add more people.

Then I get an email from Elizabeth the Niece asking what's going on tonight for dinner because if there isn't anything then she can go to a pot luck. I also had stroke clinic at 7pm, while getting all the work done. I had no time to eat well after breakfast so I had junk the rest of the day - 2 kit cat bars, 2 rolos, 2 reeces cups (okay, they are the mini halloween candy but still, I NEVER eat this stuff), I also had a buncha white carbs - RICE - which is comfort food to me. And I was going to ditch swimming.

Then, I get the note from Elizabeth, I basically lost it. I told her to go to the potluck. I do not want to force her to choose between her friends and her duty to come here. I know that she had been looking around for something "better" - go to NYC and visit her brother - more to visit NYC than her brother since she can stay at his place for free - maybe her friends will be home or around and she can visit or hang with them, maybe she can do this and that and other things... it's one thing or another and it's been going on for a few weeks. I haven't said anything. Joseph has been telling her to come here (I don't know why he tries), and finally John the Nephew told her she had to come.

And then I get that note. And I lost it. I never want to be someone's duty. She is very different from John. In the end, I just didn't care anymore what she did with her time. Of course, in the end she said she would come and was only checking to see if anyone was going to be home. John and Joseph are going to the Celtics game and she thought I might be going too. Why would she think that we would invite her over, only to leave her at home alone? And why didn't she say that in the first place? Why? Because. Passive aggressive. Leave it open ended so that she can back pedal. Seems that it's all the rage these days - everyone operates in this manner. But I don't. Whatever.

So, her answer didn't set well with me and frankly, I still don't care anymore if she shows up. I am too tired to care. So, after the stress of work, the stress of the holidays, the stress of eating shit and crap all day, I made it out of the house to stroke clinic. I am so glad I did. I really needed it.

When I got home, Joseph came in sortly thereafter and brought me stirfried eggplant. He had been swimming and getting some coaching tips from a friend who is an Olympic Silver Medalist. And they had gone to dinner after and he had read enough snippets of emails during his also very busy day that he thought I needed a cheering up. And stirfried eggplant always cheers me up.

So, that was my day yesterday. Another late night. Hectic, harried. Late to bed. Tired this morning.

I did manage to get on the treadmill for an hour this morning. Didn't think I was going to make it and it ended up being fun. My hip starting hurting midway through but I sucked it up. I have narrowed it down to the hamstring and glute pulling on my ITB that pulls on my quad that pulls on the TFL that pulls on the iliopsoas. It only hurts on when my foot hits the ground and I push off. Gotta work on this sometime tonight.

Week 46 Training Recap

This was sort of an iffy week. Can't decide if it was good or bad. The only thing that is working so far is the swimming. Go figure.
Monday: Run 30 minutes and plyometrics.Done.
Tuesday: Bike 45 minutes in the morning. Stroke Clinic in the evening. Done. Hip is tight. Swim class was ok.
Wednesday: Run 60 minutes. Done. Fartleks. Hip is still tight. I also had the urge to go for a swim after work. Ended up doing 20 laps. I have to figure out how to keep my legs from sinking.
Thursday: Bike 60 minutes. Done. 16 miles. I swear I am never gonna get any faster! ARG!
Friday: Run 30 minutes and plyometrics. And now I know why I am not gonna get any faster. I had to take the day off. WORK IS KILLING ME! GAH!!! I am so damn tired. Sigh.
Saturday: Bike 30 miles and swim 700 yards. Biked 30.56 and swam 30 laps which translates to 1500 yards. Not too shabby. I swear my last lap is always easier than my first.
Sunday: Run 14 miles. Made it until 9.56 miles. The left hip hurt bad. I am so pissed off. UGH!!!!

Total Running Miles: 16.3 miles - ugh. What Debacle.
Total Biking Miles: 58.6 - .6 miles more than last week.
Total Swimming Yards: 2700 yards - 2100 more than last week. Happy happy!
Total Stretching Days: 2 times - no wonder my hip hurts.
Total Workout Hours: 8 hours and 48 minutes.
At least my total workout hours is increasing. It's increasing by about 30 minutes every week. At some point, I have to stabilize.
Monday: Run 30 minutes and plyometrics.
Tuesday: Bike 45 minutes in the morning, Stroke Clinic in the evening.
Wednesday: Run 60 minutes. I am going to try to swim too but with the holiday prep, not sure if I can carry this off.
Thursday: Bike 60 minutes. Thanksgiving so I can't swim. Dang.
Friday: Run 45 minutes - this is 15 minutes longer. Swim in the afternoon
Saturday: Bike 30 miles. Swim 35-40 laps.
Sunday: Run 16 miles. Not sure how this will go since I bonked last week. Joseph says to just keep going. And so I will.

Black ties and Long Runs

The Red and White ball was fun last night. Of course, Joseph told me it was the Red and Black ball. But it didn't matter. I finally ended up wearing a dress I hadn't worn in 2-3 years and it was perfect. It's a simple black dress with a black outer layer that has tons of beads and sequins on it. It was a bit snug around the middle but I wasn't too uncomfortable. Came down to right above the ankles - classic cocktail length. Anyway... I thought I looked rather good, if I do say so myself. LOL!

This morning I had a bonker of a run. I mean a real B-O-N-K-E-R. On tap was 14 miles. I made it to 9.56 and stopped. Yup. My left hip has been bugging me for over a week and now it's caught up with me. Dang.

I am all bent out of shape about this.
Let me be clear on that.
I am all bent out of shape.

Saturday, November 17, 2007

I think I need more sleep. This workout thing is starting to catch up with me.

This morning, I swam 30 laps.
Joseph keeps turning into miles. "Almost 3/4 of a mile," he'd say.
GAK! I don't want to know the miles of anything. It sounds way to daunting.
But 30 laps? I can handle that.

Then I did an errand and I hopped on the bike for 30.56 miles. Not too bad.

Tonight we have a black tie.
I have nothing to wear.
Especially nothing in the way of shoes.

Anyway... it looks like all I do is sleep, eat, workout, work, rinse, repeat.
So, who cares about shoes??

Email isn't enough

So... I signed up for Facebook.
I got pinged by a friend from mine from college.
Lisa and I were pretty near best friends.
We were also sorority sisters.
Anyway, she is now in Australia running a ranch that breeds race horses.
So, she pinged me to join Facebook and last night, I bit.

There are a TON of people out there.
I am getting poked and people are writing on my wall and a buncha other interesting things. I have to finish writing up my profile. Then I can spend a few days figuring out this poking thing!

John the Nephew

He just passed the bar. Of course there was no doubt but you are always nervous until you see it in black and white. And he passed in NY State, which is one of the hardest exams around. Yahoo. We are gonna be celebrating. And I am so damn proud!!!

Also, he is coming home for Thanksgiving. How happy do you think that makes me? Yah. Indescribably. THAT. HAPPY.

I wondered what Elizabeth the Niece was going to do.
She was ruminating on all her choices. She came always come home, we're always here after all. Hmmm... should she go to NYC? Should she go visit her friends? Hmmm... which friends... blah blah blah.

In the end, she is coming for Thanksgiving, too.
John told her to she had to.
That cracks me up.
Gotta love it.
Big brother puts his foot down about proper respect for family during the holidays.

So, the menu will be simple.
Drunken stuffing (has brandy in it)
Fully Fatted Mashed potatoes (has cream and butter in it)
Root Mash (butternut squash, turnips, apples, parsnips, carrots, onions, YUM!)
And for something green - maybe green beans with french friend onions or something more interesting than regular ole green beans. Of course, they have to be FRESH. Ahem.
Cranberry sauce.
Simple. Simple simple Simple.

Exercise note: 16 miles on the bike. I have to get faster. This is a drag.

Double Workouts

I guess double workouts are okay if they sneak up on you. This morning, I had a good run. 60 minutes. Started out easy and then started doing some fartleks. I worked up a good sweat.

Then I got to work and decided to go to the pool tonight to practice my swimming. I was going to leave at 5 but due to a series of unforseen and highly irritating circumstances, I couldn't leave until 5:45. I sat around thinking I could, no I can't, yes I can, no I can't... and then on a whim, I got myself out of the office, ran to the car, drove home like a maniac, had some rice and waited for Joseph to come home.

Anyway, we did make it to the pool. Swam 20 laps. I practiced my breathing and relaxing. Toward the end, I was less tired and I ended up doing laps instead of doing lengths. I also praciced tucking my chin under to keep my head down but toward the end when I got tired, my legs started dragging. I also need to twise my torso more on my breathing side and I barely turn at all on my non-breathing side.

So I have lots to practice on.

Tomorrow, I am in the NH office and on Friday, I am in the RI office, so I will have to wait until Saturday for my next swim session. Dang.

I will say that if I am to do this, I have to plan my meals better. Ugh. I HATE EATING! WHY OH WHY CAN"T I JUST TAKE A PILL AND BE DONE WITH IT??? All source of ill comes from food and having to deal with it.

Week 4 Wellness Recap

Met with the Wellness Coach. Things are going pretty well. We agreed to meet in two weeks since next week is a holiday week. Also, since things are chugging along and it takes time to really start seeing results, we agreed that two weeks would be sufficient for the next meeting.

New this week:

  1. Swim 1-2 times a week in addition to the stroke clinic
Food Goals to maintain:

  1. I will have yogurt or an apple (or a protein bar if I need it) for my snacks.
  2. I will have my Korean meal at least three times.
  3. I will continue to calculate calories in by adding BMR calories with calories expended during the daily workout I will have a handful of nuts 3-5 days a week
Fitness Goals to maintain:

  1. I will have yogurt or an apple (or a protein bar if I need it) for my snacks.
  2. I will do seven cardio sessions (running or biking).
  3. I will do two sessions of plyometrics.
  4. I will take stroke technique class.
General Comments:
One of the things we discussed is that the body gets used to what we do. So the fact that I haven't really lost any weight could be an indication that I need to "mix things up" a bit. It makes sense since I've run and biked for 10-15 years and it's about all I've done.

Given that I have started on the plyometrics and the swimming, Diana the Wellness Coach thinks that it might be enough to jump start my body into losing some of what it is holding onto. Of course it's not really "holding onto" anything. It's just gotten really efficient at doing certain activities and so it will use less energy to do the same thing over and over again.

She would like to give things another four weeks to see what effect the swimming and the plyometrics will have. Of course, this gives me even MORE motivation to get in the pool and do my twice weekly plyo workout. These are not just cardio but both are strength exercises.

I did mention to her that I was at my smallest size when all I was doing was weight lifting. I was eating more and doing no cardio but the weight training really mattered.

I have a feeling I'll be signing up for another gym membership soon. Sigh...

In-Law comments

Ok. My friend (ok... I'm finally admitting it.) Abby posted about in-laws. First thought? GAWD!!! I hope none of them read her BLOG!!! How unhappy will she be if they do? LOL! This leads us to:

Then she goes on to talk about being mired in in-law issues and drama. Ugh. I can't stand any kinda issues or drama - in-laws, work, friends, family, or otherwise. My life is interesting enough without dealing with issues and drama - especially those of other people! I have excised all issues and drama from my life. I have exised all PEOPLE who create issues and drama in my life. The only drama I am going to have are those of my own devising. And don't hold your breath on that unless you want to die of asphixiation. Ahem.

First of all. This is a no-win situation. In almost all cases, they don't really care what you think and they certainly don't want your advice. How could they? I mean, you're NEW to the family. And in this case, you are not even a part of the family yet. So, what can you possibly say or do that will cause enough of an epiphany to make them see the light? Yah. Not happening.

Also, in most cases, there is an unvoiced "contest" to see who will "win" your allegiance - this camp or that camp, this faction or that faction, the Hatfields or the McCoys, Frick or Frack? And they don't really care other than to stack votes on their side. It will bring no good to any one involved in the mess. And regardless of the size of the issue or drama, it's always a mess.

The next thing to consider is... "WHO CARES?" It's THEIR DRAMA! Don't make it your own. Do not own it. Do not jump on the train. Do not jump into the hay wagon. Do not take the monkey off their back and put it onto yours. What good will come of it?

You will never make a difference and the issue or drama will not go away. And if one slowly dies, then another will surely arise. It's the way families work. It's the way PEOPLE ARE! It's like whining or's endless. There is always something to whine or complain about. And those who do the whining or complaining will never stop. You can duct tape their mouths shut and they will STILL be thinking things and communicating with their eyes, making those irritating little grunting noises.

I am pretty lucky. My friends know and respect how I feel and they are all pretty much the same as I am. And I have been lucky in the draw for my choice of in-laws. My direct in-laws have no issues or dramas. The indirect in-laws have their fair share. And sometimes my m-i-l will take about an indirect in-law issue or drama but she doesn't usually direct the conversation to me. She knows better. I get that suffocating feeling and I want to scream "WHO CARES??? I DON'T CARE!!!" But thankfully, she has great intelligence and knows better than to involve me.

In most situations, I clearly communicate my boundaries in all areas. In terms of personal space, personal privacy, what I think about things, my time, etc. And most people don't push but sometimes they miss a beat or fail to "get it." At that point, I just have to tell them outright. If I hurt their feelings, it couldn't be help. I refuse to live in a suffocating fashion for THEIR glee.

First, I do not engage in petty gossip, rumors or inuendos. And all of it is petty. If I want to know, I ask. If they do not want to answer, I expect them to say so. That is not to say that I don't have opinions because I do. I have definite, absolute, emphatic opinions. In my own wishy washy sort of way, of course.

Second, I will not take sides. Why should I? I don't care that much. Nothing is MY issue or concern. And why should I go through smothering, angina-inducing irritation, aggravation, and frustration? Over something that is none of my concern?? Yah. I think not.

Third, do not ask me for my opinion if you don't want an honest answer. I will tell you what I think and my opinion in a very straightforward non-euphemistic, non flowery and probably tactless way. I don't have time to put into 10 sentences something that I can say in 5 words. If you do not like it, it's not my fault. You asked, I answered.

Fourth, if I do not agree with you or enable your issue or be a supporting cast in your drama, that does not make me a bad person or an uncaring person.

I am lucky because I have Joseph. Long conversations about almost anything drive me to distraction, especially if it has to do with someone talking about another person who is not present. Joseph is good at translating things and boiling it all into a nutshell. And even then, there are times when my eyes glaze over, there is a ringing in my ears, my brain starts to cramp, and I say, "yah yah yah..." Joseph knows that is the point of no return.

Anyway, I know I miss out on some things.
But who cares???

Vermont City Marathon

Yesterday, I received an entry form for the 2008 marathon next May.

As IF!!!!

HAH! I am NEVER doing that stupid race again.

Stroke Clinic

So. First class tonight. Done.

Let me back up.
First SWIM class since I was in...oh.... Junior High School.
That was a LONG time ago.
Yup yup yup.

There were 8 of us - all women. Go figure.
It turned out that we could all swim so next week we can go into the big pool. The one I swam in this past weekend.

He just sort of had us do strokes in a little 3-ft pool to see where we were and assess our form in general.

For the crawl, I had good form. Nice long strokes and smooth, he said. Now I just have to practice.

For the back stroke, I was fine except for my limp wrist. I need to keep my hand straight on the over-stroke (not sure what you call it). Again, lots of practice.

We also tried our hand at the pull buoy. It goes between your legs right about your knee and it keeps your legs afloat while you use your arms to pull. My right side is much stronger than my left side - but we already knew that. I kept going to the left and I almost drowned. I think I need to do something to strengthen my left side. Some kind of pulley weights - what to do what to do what to do. At the very least I can keep practicing.

I am afraid to say it but I have a feeling that I will really like swimming. And I think I will be pretty good at it. It reminded me of dancing. Almost. Just dancing through the water.

Not sure if we have to do the side stroke or the breast stroke. Side stroke is too slow. Breast stroke makes me sink deeper with every single stroke until I am so deep that I kick myself up to the surface, spluttering for oxygen.

As for the butterfly, I have no desire to drown.

Bridal Shower... yah... BRIDAL SHOWER!!!

Ok. I have to talk about this based on Abby's blog.

Did I mention that I went to her bridal shower this past weekend? Yah. BRIDAL SHOWER! With LOTS OF WOMEN, sitting around and yakking. WOMEN I DO NOT KNOW! And can I just tell you how loud a group of women can be??? At one point, I had to SHOUT to be heard in the small group of three people I was a part of! Really!

Anyway, it's a complicated thing.. this relationship with Abby. She has SQUEEZED herself onto my Five Friend List with a CROWBAR! A GREASED crowbar! A BIG one. Ahem. My life is not my own...

Anyway... I ended up having a good time. I am glad I got to meet a buncha Abby's friends and her family. First thing I noticed was they are all BLOND. With Blue Eyes. They all LOOKED ALIKE! Yah. And they were all BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE!! Yes. And they were all THIN and in SHAPE! GAH!!! The kinda people you love to hate!!! BAH!!! Both Family and Friends. Ahem. Well, there was one or two who may not have been right at the top, BUT... they weren't bad... just in comparison in a room full of beautiful people... you know...

Anyway, I met the very talented Whitney. I must hire her to do a mural, among other things. And then there is her mom... I can't remember her name but I spent a lot of time with her and she is just wonderful! Then I met a client friend named Pam who was a HOOT and some people she works with that engineered this whole meeting-dating thing between Abby and Mike.

And then there were presents. LOTS OF PRESENTS. And of course, I handed her a card that had "it's in the mail" on the signature line! LOL! I am always true to character. Very predictable. This is only a tide-you-over gift anyway... I must think of something unusual. Something more Abby-like. And I don't mean a Yard 'O Licorice, either. LOL!

And while she opened presented, I sat in the back with a few people and told ABBY STORIES!!! WHEEEE!!!!! I have LOTS of Abby Stories! LOL!

Anyway... it was a very nice time. And of course, I was underdress in slacks and a sweater while everyone else looked like they were going to a cocktail party. Hmm... I guess this was a cocktail party... but still. I WAS COLD so I dressed accordingly! Sheesh.

At least now I know that I need a new dress for the wedding.

Week 45 Training Recap

Not a bad week. I am seriously mired in two-a-day workouts. Not sure how it happened, but there ya go...
Monday: Run 20 minutes. Done. Slow. I soooo did not feel like working out. Everything hurt. I have noticed that since biking more seriously, my ankles and lower calves are a mess!
Tuesday: Bike 45 minutes. Done. Love to Bike.
Wednesday: Run 45 minutes. Done. What a terrible run! I hated it. I had a late night meeting with India at 10:30 last night. I fall asleep at midnight. I wake up about 4 hours later to get to the office early for yet another early morning meeting with India. I would typically do this at home, in my pajamas, but this was a video conference meeting. ARG!!! I left early work early because I was so tired and useless. I got on the treadmill and I did mostly walking and slow running. I hate working out in the afternoons. And my fatigue didn't help at all.
Thursday: Bike 60 minutes. Done. Done. Love it love it love it.
Friday: Run 30 minutes Done. Felt pretty good. My knees hurt. Blast.
Saturday: Bike 30 miles. FDone. Awesome
Sunday: Run 14 miles. Two miles more than last week! Done. 14.17 miles. In the damn dark. And the cold. AFTER I went and swam in the morning. I am a dolt.

Total Running Miles: 21.6
Total Biking Miles: 58.0
Total Swimming Yards: 600
Total Stretching Days: 5 times
Total Workout Hours: 8 hours and 19 minutes.
Next week, is the third week in this cycle. The most dreadful and notable thing is that my mid-week run will be an hour instead of 45 minutes. Not to mention Stroke Clinic on Wednesday and swimming one other day of the week. I am also starting plyometrics to train my muscles for power. HAHAHAHAHAH! Ok. Pick yourself off the floor. It is NOT attractive. Ahem. So the week looks like this:
Monday: Run 30 minutes. Uh oh. We are upping the stakes on the Monday recovery runs. I also have plyometrics.
Tuesday: Bike 45 minutes in the morning. Stroke Clinic in the evening.
Wednesday: Run 60 minutes. It's starting to get serious
Thursday: Bike 60 minutes.
Friday: Run 30 minutes and plyometrics.
Saturday: Bike 30 miles and swim 700 yards. I hope to practice my stroke. Ha. Yah.
Sunday: Run 14 miles. And that all for the day so I can REST!

Thoughts on a long run...

So... since we're delving in to my deep dark twisted mind and what it thinks about during workouts... this is a peek into my long run. Trust me. After this, you will never ask "so, what do you think about when you run?"

Starting out...

Ugh. My legs are stiff. Here we go. At least I dressed okay. Not too hot. Not too cold... Ugh. What time is it.. is it time for a walk break? Nope. It's only been 3 months. Damn.

Ugh... time to run... okay... my right foot is hurting... think of something else... my left ankle... maybe that will start hurting so I don't have to think about my right foot... Gotta remember to delete this song from my run run... ohhhh... I like this one... is it time for a walk break? Nope... I should start running through at least every other walk break...

Reservoir... ugh. The Sun is in my eyes... GAK! I hope I don't get a stupid TAN!!! I'll get wrinkles... SUN SPOTS! GAK! Headwind... okay.. getting chilly... ah... tail wind... getting warmer...

Down Chestnut Hill Ave... it's really getting dark... cannot see in front of me hardly... run run run... stupid hill... cold... hip hurts... back is tight... blast...

DARK!!! Dang. Who turned off the lights???
I cannot believe I have to run for 30 minutes tomorrow.
I cannot believe I am starting plyometrics tomorrow.
I cannot believe I have to WORK! GAH!!!

I am not hungry. I can't cook that chicken. I am too tired. Hmmm... Maybe Joseph started dinner... Maybe he will make pasta... yum... and I won't have to cook... happy happy happy... maybe he won't... must use ESP... Joseph will cook... Joseph will cook... I'm not that hungry... hmmm... but maybe HE is hungry... I can't cook that chicken... I am too tired.... Must us ESP... Cook Pasta Cook Pasta... WHY IS IT SO DARK???

Okay. I am now at 14.17 miles. I am stopping. I will walk the rest of the way home. It's only a half mile. Everything hurts. I am cold. Getting colder. TIRED! I am definitely walking. So shoot me.

There's the house.
Lights on.
I wonder if Joseph is cooking...

Thanks GOODNESS I wore fleece mittens!!!

My first serious swim since...

I have no idea.
My last swim was about... oh... hmmm... 5 months go? Maybe?
My last serious swim? Uh... never.

Today was different. I had to go and knock out some laps to see if I would be able avoid drowning.

So, this is how it went.

Cold. The water looks cold. I hope it's not cold. Hmm... water's warm (dipping by toe in). Hmm... not as warm as I thought. Uh... hmmm, kinda cold.
Ok. Just standing here isn't going to happen...Here we go.
Breathe breathe breathe... I can't breathe... gotta take deeper breaths.
Here's the other end... YIKES! Where's the bottom!!! ARG!!! It's 6 feet deep here...gotta hang on...

rest rest rest...
Going back... Ok.. getting tired... try breathing on the opposite side... hope, don't wanna to do that... gag...
Ok... this is wimpy, gotta stop resting between lengths...Ok... here we go...
tired tired tired...
twist the body... reach... breathe...twist and reach... twist and reach... breath... reach...
Gonna do the backstroke back... not bad... I can rest...
Let's do it again.... backstroke back again... ugh... gotta get nose clips... I hate having something pinching my nose...Ugh... DEFINITELY need to get nose clips... my shoulders are hurting... I hope I can raise my arms tomorrow... I hope this is good for me... Let's try that one arms drill... left arm straight out front... right right right... good good good... let's try the left side going back... left left right (GAH)... left right (NO!) left left ... right right right... DANG!!! Stupid left side is so uncoordinated!!!! Ok.. let's try it again... right side is good... left side going back... GAH!!!! I need to practice more with my left side...sheesh.

Hmmm... 12 laps. 19 minutes. 600 yards. I think it's time to get out.

Phew. How thirsty am I???

I don't know how they do it...swimming and's nutz...

What a day what a day what a day.

I don't know how multi-sport athletes do it. Seriously.
Today I swam and I ran.
Took the whole day. Seriously.

I cannot imagine training for one of these multi-sport events.

I am so tired I can't even eat all the calories I've expended.
Now, that's exhaustion!

30-mile ride...wheeeeee....

Good day. 30 miles on the bike. Felt good. I could have ridden further.

This afternoon, we went to the pool and signed up for a year's family membership.
It's a big pool. Looks long. Hmmm... Joseph thinks it's 25 yards.
Tuesday is the Stroke Clinic.

Gawd... I hope I don't drown...

Working from home

Hmmm. After working from home for almost a whole week with a blip into the office on Wednesday, I'm not so sure if I like it.

Kinda lonely.
Not that I am a people person or anything.
Very isolating not seeing anyone.
I can see how you can become deranged by doing this all the time.
No wonder people go postal.

Week 44 Training Goals Redux

I forgot to mention that I have that swim stroke clinic next Tuesday for 50 minutes or however long it will take me to drown. I supposed I should try to get into the pool at least once before then. So, the amended goal will include:
Sat or Sun: swim
Tuesday: Swim stroke Clinic
Just goes to show how I'm blocking this event from my mind.

Exercise Note: Easy 30 minutes on the treadmill this morning. Felt pretty good. My knees ache a little. Thank goodness I am going to see Arun this afternoon! It's amazing how, since I've been biking more seriously, everything from my lower thighs to the bottoms of my feet ache and burn in ways and places I never thought possible.

Stupid bike.

Week 3 Wellness Recap

New this week:
  1. I will do two sessions of plyometrics.
  2. I will take stroke technique class.
  3. I will have a handful of nuts 3-5 days a week
Goals to maintain:
  1. I will have yogurt or an apple (or a protein bar if I need it) for my snacks.
  2. I will have my Korean meal at least three times.
  3. I will do seven cardio sessions (running or biking).
  4. I will continue to calculate calories in by adding BMR calories with calories expended during the daily workout
General Comments:
I am doing pretty well. I have decided that my weeks will go from Thursday to Wednesday since I tend to meet with the Wellness Coach on Wedesdays. Especially since I will be working from home on Tuesdays because of the stupid swim clinic! I need to eliminate the very tiring and long 45-50 minute commute that digs into work time. I need to leave the house by 6:30 at the latest so the extra couple hours of work will help a lot.

My goals from doing weights changed to plyometrics once I found out about the swim class. I can be more flexible with the plyometrics work out and add on 1 exercise a week. The weights take up more time in the beginning and the chaos of juggling too many changes at once is a huge demotivator for me.

So far so good. I am still high on my goals and I am still determined to make it work.

Of course, I haven't lost any weight. That's what I get for cheating and weighing myself 3 times this week. Grrrr.....

I so do not want to run

I worked til 11:30 PM last night due to a meeting with the India team.
I got up this morning at 4:30 and came to work at 7:00am for another meeting at 8 with the India team.
I am so tired.
I hate having this workout hanging over my head. Ugh.
I hate not working out in the mornings!

So damn stressful!
Not to mention that I am soooo tired.

I think I need to leave soon - I am operating heavy machinery (driving the car home) and it's ill-advised at the rate I am tempted to fall alseep at my desk.

Week 44 Training Recap

Another week of training. I am back on my streak!

Monday: Run 20 minutes. Done. Slow. Glad I did it.
Tuesday: Bike 45 minutes. ARG!!! Biked for only 30 minutes. I have a brain cramp.
Wednesday: Run 45 minutes. Done. Awesome run. Did 3x 1/3 mile hills with a 1/3 mile rest inbetween. Felt great.
Thursday: Bike 60 minutes. Done. Done done done. Felt great.
Friday: Run 30 minutes Done. Pretty good run.
Saturday: Bike 30 miles. Done. I love riding long. It's so cleansing. The rhythm of the wheels turning and my legs circling puts me in a meditative trance sometimes.
Sunday: Run 14 miles. Done. This was a terrific run. I got our there and RAN. I wondered why my legs were hurting. I thought to myself that I must be really tired from the bike ride. But then I looked at my pace on my handy dandy Polar and found that was running about 1:30-2:00 faster than I normally do! Yikes. I decided to just go with it even though I ended up slowing down toward the end. If I keep it up, my goal is to just go faster for longer.

Total Running Miles: 19.69
Total Biking Miles: 53.85
Total Walking Miles: 0
Total Swimming Laps: 0
Total Stretching Days: 8 times
Total Workout Hours: 7 hours and 15 minutes.
Last week was pretty good, if I do say so myself. I think that is the most I have trained in a single week in a long time. It might be the most I've EVER trained! Next week, we continue to build. The training schedule looks like this:
Monday: Run 20 minutes.
Tuesday: Bike 45 minutes.
Wednesday: Run 45 minutes.
Thursday: Bike 60 minutes.
Friday: Run 30 minutes
Saturday: Bike 30 miles.
Sunday: Run 14 miles.
There is nothing really notable. It's the same as last week but I am adding 2 miles to my long run. That might not seem like much but adding a mile or two can break a well planned run. And of course, mine are never that well-planned.

And I was going to add some weight workouts but I am thinking more about Plyometrics for power. And now that I have that stupid swim class, I will be forced to go to 2-a-day workouts. Pfffft!!!!

Remember that Stroke Clinic lottery I signed up for at the local pool? Well, after I pushed the submit button, I promptly forget about it.

Well. Because. I never win anything. Ever.
I sign up for lotteries all the time. The prizes are TV's and cars and money and lots of other good things. I never win. After I sign up, I promptly forget. I never worry about it or follow up because I never win. Ever.

Tonight I got a phone call. From the local pool.
Guess what?
I got one of the slots for the stroke clinic.
In a POOL!

It's a weekly class starting next Tuesday. Once a week for 6 weeks.
And you know that I will have to get into the pool at least a second time every week to practice!
The last time I've been in a pool is...oh... hmmm... I can't remember... uh... hmmm... 3 or 4 MONTHS ago??? WAH!!!!!

I wonder how many times I can practice between now and then.

I have to stop signing up for lotteries.

Time for an accounting

This is one tough year.

We heard about a friend of ours, whose brother just passed away from Cancer. He was 55 years old.

This is the 9th or 10th person I know about who died this year, and most of them in only the last month or two. And those are the ones I actually remember off the top of my head!

All but a couple were less than 55 years old. One was in their 80's and fought death for the last 30 years. Two were getting on in years but were still young and spritely and age was just a number.

I don't know what's going on but it's quite chilling. Even for someone like me, who thinks about death and dying at least once a day.

It must be tough to be God. It tough enough to see what I've seen, but it must be awful to see EVERYTHING!

Hungry watching the Trials

Ugh. I wish the race would hurry up and be over so I can go EAT!!!

I am starving. Sheesh.

Then I have to hit the bike for 30 miles.

Abs Diet

My good friend Cher bought a used book called the Abs Diet. She's been quoting from it for a week now. And it all made sense. So, last night, I stopped in at the local Booksmith to pick up a copy.

They not only had a copy, they had two versions! There is one for men. The guy who wrote it is a writer for Mens Health. There was also a second one for women. I sat in a chair and took five minutes to figure out if I even wanted to spend the money. It looked good. So I bought it!

Since I am on this wellness kick, and setting goals, and such, I need new ideas. I do not want to go to some fad diet or some traditional conservative boring method. And this book makes sense to me, giving some exceptions, etc. He really made a lot of sense in the small amount that I skimmed. He is a huge proponent of strength training and gives a lot of gym and home versions of the same exercise. So, now I think I can pick out a fitness goal and a good goal every week.

So far so good.

Curling Redux

Well. I have lots of people joining me for Curling.
Stayed tuned for more information.

All hotel and venue information will be posted right here.

On a wide tangent... we will be watching the Mens Olympic trials via streaming video. We were trying to find our way to NYC to watch it and the NYCM live but it didn't work out. And we even have lots of friends to stay with. What a bummer.

Week 2 Wellness Recap

We are done with Week 2. Every week, I think to myself that I really do not have to go see my Wellness Coach. After the meeting, I am glad I did because I learned something.

I must say that I think having a Wellness Coach is one of the best things I've ever done. And I particularly like this one. She is non-judgmental, positive, supportive, but not afraid to discuss and suggest. And it's good for me to be accountable to some authority figure who has the label "Wellness Coach."

First thing is the weigh in. I gained .6 pounds. Very disappointing.

Last week's goals:
So far I have the following goals and statuses

Prior Goals:

  1. Weigh once a week: Done
  2. Work out 7 times: Done
  3. Limit wine to 3 days a week: Done
  4. Write down everything I eat: Done
Last Week:

  1. Eat an apple and a yogurt for snacks in an effort to limit candy: This was a LOT harder than I thought it would be. I did this only about 3 times. ARG!
  2. Eat Bibimbap 3 times this week: This was really tough because I didn't get to the grocery store until Sunday to get all the right ingredients. So I only did this once.
Lessons Learned last week:
  1. I had sweet potatoe fries last week. Fried in olive oil. The wellness coach was okay with that, telling me that olive oil isn't that bad. But I was kicking myself. I told her that I had been telling Joseph about how good mashed sweet potatoes are and I missed an opportunity! The good news is that today, we received our vegetable box from Boston Organics and in it were 5 sweet potatoes. A change at redemption. Happy happy!
This week:

  1. Do everything on the Prior Week's List
  2. Recommit to eating an apple and a yogurt for snacks in an effort to limit candy. This is only for the work week, not the weekends. My eating habits are different on the weekends.
  3. Recommit to eating Bibimbap 3 times this week.
  4. Prepare for a strength training program. Get set up, see what needs to be bought for the house, write down the exercises.
  5. Calculate calories based on BMR and the calories expended during exercise. For example, if my BMR is 1400 calories and I expend 200 calories from running, I am allowed 1600 calories. The weight loss comes from all the calories expended to walk, work, eat, live, and do things other than working out and just existing. This will be easy to do since I work out in the mornings, I can calculate my caloric needs for the day in the morning.
Special Commitments:
  1. We had an event tonight to go to. There was wine, appetizers, dinner, dessert and basically it's the first time since going on this wellness program that I have had to confront a situation where I could lose some control. So I committed to having one glass of wine for cocktails, 3 pieces of appetizers if I can accurately tell how many calories are in it. For dinner, I would have 1/2 of my appetizer and 2/3 to 3/4 of my meal and a bite of dessert, along with a second glass of wine.

Well, due to some unforseen circumstance, I had the glass of wine (finished only half prior to dinner), and no appetizers. But it struck me as I saw things being carried by that appetizers are hard to estimate for calorie content. And if I had to only choose 3, it's amazing how none of them looked that good to me. For the dinner appetizer course, I had half the foccaccia and the tomatoes and 3 slices of mozzerella. Dinner main entree was a small portion of bow tie pasta (had all of it), steamed chinese broccoli (had all of it), and prime rib. ARG! I LOVE PRIME RIB! So I had half of that. I was happy to see that dessert was mixed berries with some sort of yogurt topping, so I had all of that! And a decaf coffee with half and half - that was probably the worst part of the meal. I was very proud afterwards!

  2. Friday night I have a hair cut and I won't get out of there until around 7pm. I told Joseph that we could meet in town for dinner. Again, a situation that I would have a hard time controlling so I recommitted to doing similar things as in situation 1 above. Turns out that tonight, Joseph said I should just eat dinner before leaving for my haircut and then have a light snack when I get back. Well, that solved this little problem, didn't it? Happy happy!

The Olympic Trials for Curling are coming to Broomfield, Colorado in 2009.

I need to make reservations.
I should hurry in case hotels and flights sell out.

Anyone interested in coming with me?
