4 more weeks til Boston

Last week wasn't too bad considering that I was recovering from the sinus infection and considering I couldn't breathe too well. In the middle of the week, I came down with hives. I get hives from STRESS. I went to the Company Clinic and yes, the stress could have started it BUT it turns out that I am now officially allergic to Penicllin! Turns out it is an acquired allergy over time. All we know is that next time, it will happen faster and it will be much worse. Sigh... if it's not one thing it's another...

So, last week looked like this:

Monday 3/23 - Walk 30 minutes in the morning. Scary Trainer in the evening. The Boss's Boss is away. Yahoo! - Done. Back to lifting. Very light in preparation for the marathon.

Tuesday 3/24 - Run 3 miles in the morning, Massage in the evening. - Done. 3.05 miles

Wednesday 3/25 - Run 3 miles in the morning. Scary Trainer in the evening. - Body is tired and a little achy so decided to walk 1 mile instead. Went into lift and Scary Trainer made me go home.

Thursday 3/26 - Run 3 in the morning. Ok. Bad day all around. Very very tired. So walked a half mile and pooped out. It's something though.

Friday 3/27 - Walk 30 minutes in the morning. Ran in the morning- 2.69 miles. Tired but feeling a little better but still achey. Met with Scray Trainer.

Saturday 3/28 - 21 miles again. I will go from the start to mile 21 and
see what happens. No way no how. Went out for 6.25 miles instead. Other than the chilly headwind, it was a good run.

Sunday 3/29 - 6 miles - easy loop. 3.56 miles

Total Miles: 18.05 miles miles. There was point in my life when I used to think that anything over 15 miles was GOOD. Amazing. Talk about a step back week. It's more like a COMA week. Sigh...

Next week's schedule:

Monday 3/30- Walk 30 minutes in the morning. Scary Trainer in the evening.
Tuesday 3/31 - Run 30 miles in the morning. Scary Trainer in the in the morning.
Wednesday 4/1 - Run 6 miles in the morning.
Thursday 4/2 - Run 3 in the morning.
Friday 4/3 - Walk 30 minutes in the morning. Scary Trainer sometime during the day.

Saturday 4/5 - 21 miles again. I will go from the start to mile 21 and see what happens.
Sunday 4/6 - 6 miles - easy loop.

100 Favorite Things #16: Honey

Right off the honey comb. And then you chew every bit of honey out of the comb.

Nothing like it.
Nothing.

Except maybe tator tots.

Hmmm. I wonder what honey on tator tots would be like?

Infected

And I am down with a sinus infection. ARG!

After two weeks of coughing and sneezing, I broke down and went to the doctor.
I knew it wasn't a cold or the flu because I had been running fine, if not for the little bit of congestion - most likely from post nasal drip, yadda yadda yadda. And of course, the coughing at night keeping me awake is making me tired and run down.

So, I made an appointment with the doctor finally. Ugh. I hate going to the doctor. I have to get my coat on, walk for 20 minutes, check in, sit around for another 20-30 minutes, get pre-examined, then sit for another 10-15 minutes, then the doctor comes in, go through the exam, sit and chat, then pay and check out, and then walk back to the office. Then I have to go to the drug store and wait around for the prescription. And I do not have that kind of time in my day! GAH!

So, someone mentioned that our Company health clinic downstairs would be better.

Huh? Really. They look at things like this? REALLY? Wow. Uh. Okay.

So off I go down stairs. Walked in. Waited for 10 minutes, got pre-examined, waited 3 minutes, doctor comes in, takes about 10 minutes, walks out, comes back inside of 5 minutes with a bottle of drugs, instructions, etc., and take a minute to tell me what to do. Then back to the office. 25 minutes door to door. And it was only $10 and I didn't have to pay for the drugs. GOOD GRIEF! This is the best thing since sliced bread! WOW. WOW WOW WOW!!!! I am soooo happy. I happily canceled my other doctor's appointment. Happy happy happy!

I did have a low-grade fever (99.8 which is up from my usual 96.8 - I have low body temperature which is why, along with my low blood pressure, am cold all the time). And I do have a sinus infection. I've taken the meds for a day and a half and I feel slightly better. The double vision and headache went alway almost immediately but the body aches are only half gone.

And the doctor in the clinic is a runner. He didn't tell me not to run. He didn't wince when I told him that I had run 21 miles last weekend with this crap in my head.

Later on today, I will try to go out and run a bit. See what happens. And if I don't fall over, I'll just keep going.

New low

New low since Thanksgiving. 3 lbs away from where I was last summer before the Thanksgiving to New Years Holidays Pig Fest. The Season of Overabundance and Winter Fat.

Something is going right. Could be the miles catching up or the wheat or the calories. I do remember that the rule of thumb is to really lose weight, you have to do 45 minutes of exercise 7 days a week or an hour 5-6 days a week in addition to watching what you eat. Losing weight and building muscle - doing it the right way - is a ton of work. And that is why most Americans can't do it. We're not used to working that hard.

So the last two weeks of caloric restriction along with the high 30's and 40+ mile weeks are catching up with me, I think. And whatever it is, I'll take it.

Rose tea

This past Sunday, before Chinese class started, Laoshi gave me a really nice, pretty tin of Rose Tea. She likes to give me things. Anyway, rose tea is just what it sounds like. Little tiny miniature petite tiny rose buds, each one perfectly formed.

She said "drink at night before you go to sleep, help you sleep."

Joseph said he heard her say, "drink tea, go to bed."

Well you can interpret that a number of ways. But it all becomes very clear after you drink it. You have no choice but go to sleep, because, well, it puts you to sleep.

G'night.

5 more weeks til Boston

Last week's training plan and accomplishments:
Monday 3/16 - Rest in the morning, Bike 30 minutes in the evening - Ok. BIG MISTAKE. Uh... 5 miles for 20 minutes on the bike trainer and my hip flexors and thighs hurt. GAH!

Tuesday 3/17 - Run 3 miles in the morning - ran 3.3 miles in the morning. Note to Self: NEVER EVER ride the bike in the middle of marathon training if you haven't ridden the bike for more than 9 months. This is one lesson I won't forget.

Wednesday 3/18 - Run 6 miles in the morning. - 6.28 miles in the morning. The usual reservoir loop. Legs were loose but tired at the same time. I don't get it. And if it's gonna by 55* during the day, why oh why can't it be 50* in the morning when I have to run instead of 34.7*??? The gods are against me.

Thursday 3/19 - Run 3 in the morning. Ran 3.19 miles in the morning. Had a rare morning to do this.

Friday 3/20 - Bike 30 minutes. I learned my lesson the hard way. No biking. Walked 1 mile on the treadmill instead.

Saturday 3/21 - 21 miles - I think I need to run the course again from ile 3 or 4. Maybe Joseph will drop me off. Joseph dropped me off at mile four. I hate my shoes. DS Trainers are not the shoes for me, that is for sure. Then half way through my footpod died so I had to guess at the total miles. Of course it as a highly educated guess so I called it 21.6 miles. That's nothing to shake a stick at, I guess.

Sunday 3/22 - 6 miles - usual loop. Joseph thought I should do 4 miles. First dilemma - that would give me about 39.67 miles. Uh... less than half a mile short of a 40-mile week. Okay. That is really not acceptable. So I went out and decided to see how I felt. I felt GREAT. And there was a running club that I encountered almost the moment I hit Beacon Street. And they were running to the finish! So that's what I did. 6.25 miles total. Happy happy. Better news is that my legs feel fine. AND, I found the shoes. Mizuno Elixers. Sort of like DS Trainers but they put you forward more. It does make a difference.

Total Miles: 41.62 miles. I had no idea. It sort of just "happened." I am very pleased.
Next week's schedule:
Monday 3/23 - Walk 30 minutes in the morning. Scary Trainer in the evening. The Boss's Boss is away. Yahoo!

Tuesday 3/24 - Run 3 miles in the morning, Massage in the evening.

Wednesday 3/25 - Run 3 miles in the morning. Scary Trainer in the evening.

Thursday 3/26 - Run 3 in the morning.

Friday 3/27 - Walk 30 minutes in the morning. Scary Trainer sometime during the day.

Saturday 3/28 - 21 miles again. I will go from the start to mile 21 and see what happens.

Sunday 3/29 - 6 miles - easy loop.

Open note to the people I work with

I cannot be friends with co-workers. Especially if you're a subordinate. And especially if you weren't a friend before you became a co-worker. I am no snob or elitist but personal experience has shown that it doesn't work.

Most people don't know boundaries. Or understand it. They cross the line and expect friendly bantering, joking around, personal discussions, and all that poking around in personal stuff. At work and out of work. And I am very very protective of my personal stuff.

There are a few exceptions, of course. Like my Friend Lilly with the two adorable little girls. And by friend Debbie. But that took years to cultivate and it was unintentional. We all sort of "fell upon it." And even if we are bantering at work, it's usually in private, amongst ourselves, and when there are "intruders" around, we revert back to work mode automatically.

So if I work with you, don't expect me to accept your friend request on Facebook or stop to banter in the halls about another coworker that we are separately Friends with. I don't do stuff like that. And instead of making me like you more, it will probably make things go the other way. And using that is not going to make me more friendly with you.

Just sayin...

Happy Spring

Today is the first day of Spring.
Unfotunately, it doesn't seem any different than yesterday, which was Winter.

In fact, it's colder today than it was yesterday.

Note to self: Biking on the trainer

Never ever ride the bike, even for 5 miles in the middle of marathon training especially if you haven't ridden in over 9 months because your legs and back will ache for days.

Especially on a cross-training or recovery day.
Walking is better.

6 more weeks until Boston

Last week's training plan and accomplishments:
Monday 3/9 - Rest in the morning, Scary Trainer in the evening. Goodworkout in the evening. Scary Trainer knows it's 6 weeks to Boston and we ended up doing no lower body workouts - just upper body. It was a good session.

Tuesday 3/10 - Run 3 in the morning, recovery run, Scary Trainer in the evening - medium legs. Life gets in the way again. I should way WORK gets in the way. 7am meeting with the boss's boss. This is after staying up until midnight to finish the final draft on a presentation that HE will present to HIS boss's boss. That would be my boss's boss's boss's boss. Got that? So, obviously, I did not get my run in before work. PFFFT.

Wednesday 3/11 - Run 3-4 in the morning. Managed a measly 2.75 on the treadmill. I hate the treadmill. I hate the cold. So I opted for the lesser of two hates and picked the stupid treadmill. Sigh...

Thursday 3/12 - Run 3 in the morning, Scary Trainer in the evening. Ran 3 miles in the morning and lifted in the evening. I can't remember the last time I actually did things according to plan.

Friday 3/13 - Run 4-5 in the morning. Massage in the afternoon. I AM PSYCHED!!! Again. Did according to plan. Ran 4 miles. Happy happy! Massage was fabulous. Chris fixed up my right hip. Complicated but he traced the issue to the front end of the QL that inserts into the obliques and iliopsoas area, all of which was being pulled by the outer quads. Jeez.

Saturday 3/14 - 18 miles - I think I need to run the course again from mile 2. Maybe Joseph will drop me off. No way no how. The parents-in-law were in town and it's not a problem but we were having a huge dinner with Joe's sister and her family, etc., and I had to do shopping and run around and basically do the things that normal people do but which I can't do during the week because I do not have a normal job with normal bosses in a normal business with normal work and therefore, I never have time during the week to do anything. Never. Except, work out, work, eat, sleep. Seriously. It's like I work in a labor camp - morning to night. Anyway... Ever wonder what I really do? Yeah. I do too. So, after dinner and while Joe cleaned up and right before bed, I managed ONE SINGLE MILE ON THE STUPID TREADMILL lest I break my STREAK of working out every single day since Dec 29th! GAWD! What stress that is - keeping up with a streak.

Sunday 3/15 - 6 miles - usual loop. 18.26 miles. And a PR to boot. Finished up about 20-25 minutes faster than my usual 18 milers. And I started from Framingham at the 7 mile mark and ran all the way home. I even ran up all of the hills, including the ones in Newton. Secret? Small strides, fast turnover. This was one of the best runs I've had in a really really long time!

Total for the week: 29.01 miles and 3 Scary Trainer sessions - this is one of the lowest mileage weeks ever and I am not too happy about it because it's suppose to be a ramp up week, not a step back week. Last week was step back week and I ran 31.4 miles! I am so annoyed. This was a tough week at work and with all the social and family commitments on top made things really bad. I am now going to curl up into a fetal postion and lay in the dark for the next 3 days! Right-o.
Next week's schedule is different. Scary Trainer is mixing it up and I am taking a week's rest from lifting. The diet is also changing to prep for the marathon, also. We will see what there is in store but I am hoping to get in many more miles of running inbetween working for eight bosses at work.

And no one better ask me to do anything SOCIAL! GAH!

Food Update - Learning as we go

So, Scary Trainer told me a while back that I am different than his other clients. Most of the sit around in between sessions with him. I, on the other hand, go out and run marathons. So it's been a learning experience for both of us.

For him, it's about how to drop the body fat, lift weights, while running a lot of miles, and not over train, not under eat, and not put the metabolism to sleep.

For me, it's about doing things that I thought I could maybe do, but wasn't really sure that I could do. And I am carefully monitoring my body responses to various food and workouts, and combinations thereof. The best part is that I have someone, a captive audience, with whom I chew this over with, week after week. Basically, we had a long conversation.

Anyway, Marathon Training has been killing me. I am realizing (now that I am paying close attention to it) how messed up your body gets. The muscle micro-tears, the resulting edema, the dehyration, trying to figure out what to eat - it's all one giant lab experiment. And highly imperfect.

We have figured out that cutting back on calories and increasing activity isn't always the key to fat/weight loss, it seems. As a result of lower calorie intake, the running and the lifting, Scary Trainer thinks my metabolism is getting slower. Sort of like when Jillian on Biggest Loser screams at one of her contestant after a bad weigh in, because they haven't eating enough. Interesting. You know it, but living it is quite different.

So, for a couple of weeks now and until after the marathon, we are "rebalancing." This past week, there was no lifting. All I did was run. Next week, we start back with the weights, only different.

From a food issue, we are also increasing by 100 calories a week until marathon week when we hit 2200 calories. The goal is to NOT put on any weight as a result. The first two weeks, we are cutting out wheat, rice and corn. What's left? Root vegetables - white and sweet potatoes, turnips, etc. It's been interesting. My long run on potatoes did NOT work - I have found that RICE with a bit of protein is the best thing for me the night before and the morning of my long run. It's easily digested. Cutting out wheat has also shown me how bloated and tired I get. Wheat is unavoidable in certain instances but I try to cut out all visible and known sources of wheat. Of course it that is the only thing available, I won't starve myself, either.

Training stops two weeks before the marathon (tapering), and the week after too. Then it starts back up again.

Should be interesting.

I will say that I am running harder and better than I have before. I am pretty happy about it. I know that I will break the weight thing this year. Given that I felt like it was going to take about 3 years to get back what I lost (or lose what I gained since 2004)I feel that I am on track and doing it the right way.

This summer, I am going to focus on speed on runs, long bike rides and get back in the pool again. More balancing. Time will tell how it will all turn out.

Too many friends

I'm thinking of starting to unfriend people on Facebook. I have too many. I can't keep with the ones I like much less the ones I'm totally indifferent to.

I can't be friends with people I barely know or barely talk to. Not even via email!
I hope they don't notice.

No matter.
If they do and they get upset, they weren't really my friends in the first place.
So I don't really care.

Oh. And if I work with you and we are not FRIENDS outside of work, then I will never Friend You. Never. There is a line that cannot be crossed.

6 More Weeks to Boston

Word for the week: Tired
Monday 3/2 - Run 3-4 miles in the morning. Event in the evening - another one. It never ends. Ran 3 miles. Good way to start the week.

Tuesday 3/3 - Run 2-3 in the morning, recovery run, Scary Trainer in the evening - heavy legs. No way I could run. Had to get into the office because I had to do things for my Boss's Boss who now thinks he is also my Boss. Hfff. Tough workout with Scary Trainer though. Tough.

Wednesday 3/4 - Run 3-4 in the morning, Scary Trainer in the morning - medium legs, heavy core. Ran 2.75 very slow miles in the morning. Lifting with Scary Trainer in the evening. Done.

Thursday 3/5 - Early meeting in the morning, Run in the evening after work 3-4 miles - walked a mile. This was so lame. ARG!!! I hate not working out in the morning. No matter how I try to do it in the evening, something always happens to thwart the best laid plans.

Friday 3/6 - Run 4-5 in the morning, Scary Trainer in the evening. Managed 2.75 in the morning and lifted in the evening. For some reason, I just wasn't into running this morning. At least it's a step back week.

Saturday 3/7 - 15 miles - it's a step back week - YAHOO! - 15.75 miles starting from Mile 2 on the Marathon Course in Ashland. By thetime I got to the long downhill at mile 15, my legs were like hamburger. I am thinking to myself that there is no way I am going to be able to run this marathon given how I feel after only 15 miles! But then I noticed that I ran 15.75 miles as a personal best. It's about 15 minutes faster than my usual time for 15 miles. Wow.

Sunday 3/8 - 4 miles - did I say it's a step back week? Doing the happy dance! - legs felt pretty good. I went out and ran 6 miles. OMG, was it SLOW!!! After the first mile, my legs usually loosen up a fair bit, but this time, they just got TIRED! Sigh... 6.15 miles.

Total for the week: 31.40 miles & 3 Scary Trainer sessions
Next week's schedule:
Monday 3/9 - Rest in the morning, Scary Trainer in the evening.
Tuesday 3/10 - Run 3 in the morning, recovery run, Scary Trainer inthe evening - medium legs.
Wednesday 3/11 - Run 3-4 in the morning.
Thursday 3/12 - Run 3 in the morning, Scary Trainer in the evening - heavy core, light legs.
Friday 3/13 - Run 4-5 in the morning. Massage in the afternoon. I AM PSYCHED!!!
Saturday 3/14 - 18 miles - I think I need to run the course again from mile 2. Maybe Joseph will drop me off.
Sunday 3/15 - 6 miles - usual loop.

Totals for the year

Jan - 102 miles
Feb - 130 miles
And February was a short month.

I do not think this has ever happened before.
I might just make it to 1000 miles this year.
I have never run over 665 miles in a given year for various reasons.
I am crossing my fingers just in case I am jinxing myself.

Random thought: Tuna

I smell tuna fish.
It wouldn't be strange if I weren't sitting in an amphitheatre at the ICA.
Of course one could argue it's ok to smell tuna fish since it's on the harbor.
But then, it's not fresh tuna, it's more like tuna salad.
There's a disease where you smell maple syrup.
Or is it where you pee something that smells like maple syrup.

Hmmm.
I wonder if there's a disease that exudes tnua fish salad aroma.

7 More Weeks Until Boston

For all those people who donated in the last week, thank you thank you thank you. I am $1200 away from my goal! It's getting tougher but I think I can do it.

Last week's training plan and accomplishments:

MON 2/23 - rest in the morning, Scary Trainer (LIFT) in the evening - After a weekend of running 18 miles and 6 miles, I needed to take a day off from running! Phew! So I took the morning off and had my training session with Scary Trainer. Nothing unusual except it was HARD. Again.

TUE 2/24 - Run 2-3 in the morning, recovery run, massage in the evening. - Managed to run 2.5 miles on the treadmill. It forces me to run more slowly for recovery.

WED 2/25 - Run 3-4 in the morning, Scary Trainer in the morning - medium legs, heavy core - ran 4.18 miles in the morning. It was 21*. Pffft. Scary Trainer in the evening.

THU 2/26 - Run 3-4 in the morning, Scary Trainer in the evening - light legs, heavy upper body - nothing in the morning. So daggum tired! Had a good Scary Trainer session.

FRI 2/27 - Run 4-5 in the morning, Big Event to attend in the evening - stupid kitten! GAH! Did not sleep well. Could barely make it out of bed without falling down. And it was icy from overnight rain and snow. Of course this meant that I would kill myself if I went outside so Joseph told me to run on the treadmill. I walked instead. Still streaking. 54 days straight of excercising.

Sat 2/28 - Run 18 - 19 miles (again, it's vuja de all over again...) I was finished with the out and back with the headwind. Instead, I headed out to the reservoir and ran around it. Eight time. Yup. It would have been really boring if not for the straight on 25 mph headwind for a third of the way around. Good lord, it was amazing! The loop also had a lot of downhill. So my stabilizer muscles were screaming at the end of the run. This was good training for the downhills through mile 16 at Boston. I felt good except my legs felt really tired. 18.15 miles. And I lived to see another day!

SUN 3/1 - Run 6 miles- I am tired. TIRED. So I had to do some picture editing and moving and when I looked up, it was SNOWING! Blech. So I went upstairs to the treadmill. I banged out six miles - finished watching The Man Who Knew Too Little (which goes to show I don't know enough not to watch this drivel), and started watching "Along Came Polly" with Ben Stiller. I am about 20 minutes in and the jury is out. Ho hum...

Total for the week: 34.97 miles & 3 Scary Trainer sessions

Next week's schedule

Monday 3/2 - Run 3-4 miles in the morning. Event in the evening - another one. It never ends.
Tuesday 3/3 - Run 2-3 in the morning, recovery run, Scary Trainer in the evening - heavy legs.
Wednesday 3/4 - Run 3-4 in the morning, Scary Trainer in the morning - medium legs, heavy core
Thursday 3/5 - Early meeting in the morning, Run in the evening after work 3-4 miles
Friday 3/6 - Run 4-5 in the morning, Scary Trainer in the evening
Saturday 3/7 - 15 miles - it's a step back week - YAHOO!
Sunday 3/8 - 4 miles - did I say it's a step back week? Doing the happy dance!
